It appears that a Mr. Ridgway had contracted t> Tun a waste pipe from the school-house, corner ‘Of F and 5th streets, across the lot, ‘ote s wer, and the locality of the latter not b-ing certain, jons bad been dug in var ous parts of seertain its whereabouts. On Sat- urday. about five o’clock, two of the men, George Coleman and Edward Je‘Terson, had dug & trench about two feet wid: and fifteen feet deep, when one side of it gave way. bury- ing them completely, and Mr. Riigway, who was in the sct of leaving the trench, came also near being canght. A number of soldiers, on — at the Judiciary Square hospital build- nes, and the workmen employed about the School-house at once set to work to ex:ricate the men, and after nearly two hours’ work reached Geo. Coleman, whose voice had made known his whereabouts, and he was taken out alive, although badly bruised, and carried to his resideuce. He conld not tell where his companion was, and those present set to work, and at near nine o'clock succeeded in reaching the body of Jefferson, life being extinct at the tire. Coleman and Jefferson resided in the same house, on 4th street, near N, where they ‘were taken; but the cause of death being so apparent, an inquest was deemed unnecessary. The police of the Fourth Ward rendered all the assistance in their power. eee Native ENTERPRISE.—We have just heard of the transfer of a valuable piece of property, which, while it illustrates the rapid growth in ‘value of real estate in this city, gives evidence, at the same time, of the successful enterprise of one of our young and energetic merchants. The lot of ground and premises on Pennsyl- yania avenue, between 9th and [0th streets, No. 306, has been soid by its owner, Lewis, John- son, to John F. Ellis, for forty-five thousand dollars. Mr. Ellis started in business in this place Some ten or twelve years ago, and by his energy and indomitable perseverance he has amassed Means sufficient to justity him in making this extensive purchase. He intends, we under- stand, to teardown the old building and erect in its stead an edifice which, while it will be an ornament to the city, will be worthy of the very liberal patronage which he has received from his fellow-citizens. The whole building will be devoted to the sale of music and pianos. He proposes to keep on exhibition in the second story the largest collection of Chickering pianos that can be found in any establishment in thi< country, thus affording his patrons the amplest field for the selection of one of these maguificent instruments. It is truly gratifying for us thus to record the success of one of our own native-born mer- chants. Mr. E. isa Washington boy; is yetin the prime of life, and we trust that before his hair has been silvered o’er with age, pe may bave reaped an abundant harvest from his un- tiring devotion to his business.—Jntelligencer. — Orrnays’ Cocrt, Judge Purcell_—On Satur- day the will of Edward Pearce was fully proven and admitted to probate. ‘The will of Jane Ward, nominating her son, John Ward, as executor, was fally proven. Thursday night & party arrived at the railroad depot from the est, who excited the compassion of all who saw them, and the officers and employees of the railroad company raised quite an amount for their benefit. The family party numbered mineteen persons, among them a father and his ten children, and they were on their way from Indiana to the neighborhood of Lynchburg, te recover possession of a farm which they had sold, but bad not received a payment. They stated that they started from Indiana to trayel by wagon, butin crossing a bridge the wagon broke through, killing the mother, severely in- juring a niece, and bruising others of the party. After this mishap they took the railroads, and on tbe way the entire party got the chills. At the Baltimore depot Thursday the entire num- ber were all shaking tegether. Star. es Fires.—About 7 o'clock Saturday night fire was discovered in the second story of F. & A. Schneider's iron foundry, corner ot 18th street and Pennsylvania avenue. The alarm was sounded from box No. 45, the firemen respond- ed promptly, and soon extinguished the flames. The loss wis about $6W0, principally by water. The hose carriage of Company No. 3, (Frank- lin,) was rendered unserviceable by the break- ing of the iron axle, at the corner of 17th street and Peunsyivania avenue. About the same hour an alarm was given near the corner of th and L streets, cnused by the burning of a fence, set cn fire by throwing ashes against it. The prompt application of water from buckets extinguished the flames before much damage was done, and prevented a@serious conflagration. ——.
