_EVENING STAR. SPREAD OF THE CATTLE Disease IN ENG. £axp.—The murrain which has for several months been raging amongst cattle in England, bas at last seized also upon sheep, which were at first exempt. No remedy bas yet been dis- | covered for this plague, which is causing con- sternation and distress amongst the farmers. it has been sausfactorily established now, we | believe, that it was not introduced from the continent; that it is highly infectious; that it | May be canght by sheep from cattle, and the | Teverse; thata remedy which is successful in one case will most likely fail altogether in the | next, and pees that complete isolation will mot saveaherd. There have been several in- stances in which valuable herds, carefally isolated in extensive parks, with plenty of s lund food and the best of accommodations— and at a distance from the points where the disease was raging—were attacked, with great oes Amongst the remedies which have been tried, with rather less than more success, are iron rust water, brandy, beer, whisky, port wiue and the cautery. Siise Burdett Coutts trieu to save a favorite Alderney by the administration of wine and brandy; the animal died, but the wits assert that it was of deliriam tremens. Atany rate, the “best of port wine” could not save ber, though it would perhaps have eased her last moments could Sukey have known she was getting her fill of stuff worth two guineas per bottle. It is pleasant to feel that this terrible scourge ean bardly be carried across the Atlantic. | Even the Irish channel seems wide enough to | stop it; for Ireland is, thus far, happily ex- empt. But ft would yet be well to nse some precautions here. It would be a greatcalamity to have a@ cattle murrain break out on this con- tinent now: and it may be well to look pretty sbarply after stock imported in these days from England —N. Y. Post BF Gentlemen who have recently been in the neighborhood of FortGaines, Ga., a small town on the Chattahoochee River, in the South- Western part of that State, informs us that the presence of Northern men is peculiarly distaste- ful to the inhabitants of that section. They state that it is really unsafe for a soldier of the United States army, or for a Northern man, to go outin the country any distance, and that some of the residents of that region make a boast that no Yankee shall ever live down there.—Chattanooga Gazette. 87 The New Haven Palladium says: (. E. Daily, Esq., ofthe Treasury Department, Wash- fugton passed through the city last week, trom Barkhamstead, accompanied by his wife and baby. The latter is one of a pair of twins, which, on their advent into the world, two months and a half before they were expected, weighed exactly a pound apiece! He, the sur- vivor, is now seven weeks old and weighs two and a half pounds. &7 Gen. Conner bas issued a circular an- nouncing war to the knife against the Indians. ‘The officers conmanding the expedition are or- dered not to leaye a trail, when once struck, until they have overtaken and punished the savages; and, to accomplish this, the command will be supplied with an extra amount of salt with which to preserve game for subsistence, after the regular rations may be exhausted. 87 Cortinas, the Mexican bandit, who fights alternately on one side or the other, as Liber- als or Imperialists pay the best, now has his headquarters on the Texas side of the Rio Grande, and is unmolested, though for years he bas been regarded as an outlaw, and there are many indictments against him for robbery and murder. Races.—At the Paterson (N. J.) course on Thursday the first race was won by Nannie Craddock, the second by Baltimore, and the third by Kentucky. Baltimore was entered by Messrs. Bowie and Hall, of jand, for a eweepstake of $300—two miles. Time made by Baltimore was 1.54 1.54. MAREIAGEOY AN AcTOR.—Edwir Booth at- tended the Brooklyn Academy of Music on ‘Wednesday evening with his bride, a daughter o! Mr. Jules Hauel, of Philadelphia, to whom be was married on the Sth inst.—N. ¥. Express. &7 The Mobile Tribune reports that a new: paper to be edited by colored men, in the in- terests of the colored people, is to be set up in that city. Bz The negroes in Riehmond are getting up a firm, to be called the “Richmond Tobacco Association,” capital $10,000, for the purpose of manufacturing tobacco. They have $7,(K0 of at already subscribed. AwmeERIcAN TACTICS IN THE BRITICH ARMY. —His Royal Highness, the Duke of Cambridge, Commander-in-chief of the British Army, has ordered General Morris’s Simplified System of Infantry Tactics to be tested at Aldershot this Autumn. @7 An enterprising man in Detroit is erecting @ building, one room of which will forma large ice-house, surrounded by saw dust, for the re- ception of butter. eggs, &c. The water escap- ing enters a reservoir containing cans of milk. SF Officers of the United States Government are now engaged at the New Haven light house getting in readiness several kind of fog signals which they are going to experiment with in a few days. Daboll’s signal born 1s one, a stee} bell owned by the government is another, and a gong fog signal is a third. | Fraissaras STANDARD SCALES.
