Laie MArket DEALERS AND THE MEASURES —It is gratifying to hear the dealers in the Center Market suggesting for the public benefit meas- ures that will secure to every purchaser the trne measure for bis money. This morning, several were complaining of the unfairness of measures, and from this conversat.on we learned that many measures haye been short- ened to defraud purchasers. Some have been sealed by the Sealer of Measures, and subse- juently cut down by the dealers; others haye removed a staye from their wooden measures, crinashed their tin measures. The fair denl- ers are in favor of an annual examination and sealing of all measures, the seal to show the date of inspection, as in the Baltimore market. They also suggest that the clerks of the mar- kets be empowered to inspect and seal meas- ures in the markets, and receive the stamp fee in every case; also in favor of a fine of $20 for every aitempt to use a false or unsealed measure. Ifit were pessible for the Sealer of Weights and Measures to attend the market daily, t rauds by short measure be preyent- ed, but in lieu thereof the dealers favor the employment of the clerks to act. Sei y thas re THE Pros T OF THE FRUIT Season.—The on for fruit is fast opening, and already the y crop has reached the market. The ustial forerunners of the season arrived a week azo, and althongh very poor were purchased readi- ly at high rates. ‘The growers shipping to this markit promise an abundant supply of first quality. The growers in St. Mary’s county, Md., who have recently turned their attention to the cnitivation of fruit will ship largely. Now there are nine growers shipping from Plowden,s wharf, in St. Mary's, and Mr. E. J. Plowden himseif, who is extensively engaced in cu ating the peach, plum, pear, appleand other trnit, made his first shipment of fifty-six boxes this week, and notified his consignee to be ready for the reception of 200 boxes first quality fruit next week Req NG ATS A prominent city physician suggests to us. apropes of an item in the Star in regard to accidynts resulting from detective filling up of water-pipe trenches, that we should stir up the city railroad com- panies to defects on their part of the pavement, by which carriage wheels are badly wrenched and frequently broken. We notice laborers at work on the track on Seventh street north, and doubt not they will shortly reach the point complained of, Crorera Monsts. <Yeaterday morning, about ten o'clock, a clerk in Stanton Hospital, named Dubois, fell at the corner of 6th street and Louisiana ayenue, Suparenty in great agony, from cholera morbus. Such relief as could be afforded was instantly rendered, and the snfferer was taken by Ghhiser McCOolgan and conveyed to Stanton Hospital. His con- ditien was supposed to be very critical. Swivprine.—Elias Cohn wis arrested by officer Barkley yesterday, on a charge of swindling W. Townsend, col., out of a silver watch and gold chain. Townsend left the watch and chain with Cohn to be repaired, and it appeared from the evidence that when he went for his watch Cohn gave him the watch and a brass chain, Justice Drury held Cohn to bail for court.
