Druiham, 3d District, 2d Division. BREVET APPOINTMENTS. Among the brevet appointments recently made are Brigadier Gen. Joshua L. Chamber- lain, of the First Division, Fifth Army Corps, to be Major General by Brevet, and Col. H. W. Perkins, Adjutant General of the late Twentieth Army Corps, to be Brigadier Gen- eral by Breyet. As an especial mark of ap- preciation of the gallant services rendered by Gen. Chamberlain during the closing campaign and in Virginia, in which he was thrice wounded, General Grant ordered the appoint- ment to date back to March 29th, the day of the battle of Quaker Road, which was the initiative of that grand and successful cam- paign. General Chamberlain was selected, it will be remembered, as the officer to re- ceive the actual surrender of Lee’s army, which stacked arms in front of his division. There was a large attendance of buyers, and the bidding was lively. The terms were payment in gold, the gold doilar being reckoned equivalent to one dollar and forty-two cents in Government paper currency. Middling fair Savannah cotton sold for thirty-seven and a half cents per pound, middling for thirty-three and a quarter to thirty-three and a half, and ordinary for twenty-three and a querter cents, First quality Sea Island brought eighty-six and a Balt cents. ImcREASED Pay.—The distribution of the extra compensation to clerks in the Treasury Department, at Washington, voted at the last Session of Congress, has been made by the Sec- retary of the Treasury. The salaries of audi- tors or heads of bureaus, are increased from $3,000 to $4,000; chief clerks from $2,000 to $2,500 and $2,700; fourth class clerks from 21,300 to $2,300; third-class clerks from $1,600 to $1,800. The first and second classclerks get nofincrease of pay, and very naturally feel sore about it,— New Yor’ Times. 7 The Army of the Shenandoah is yvirtual- ly discontinued. New York, July 22.—The latest intelligence from Hayti shows the insurrection to be still confined to Cape Haytien. President Geffrard has is- sued a proclamation to his people, assuring them that the motte of liberty and fraternity of the insurgents is asham. He offers amnesty to the inhabitants of Cape Haytien, and urges them to expel the rebellious leaders. Part of Cape Haytien is now in a state of blockade, The Pirate Shenandoah. Boston, July 22.—A private letter by the last muil from Australia states it was rumored at Meibourne that the pirate Shenandoah was ernising off the coast of New Zealand. Ot ee eer Granp LARCENY.—On Monday last, Edward Maher was arrested by Detective Bigley, upon a warrant issued by Justice Walter, on the oath of Justice N. H. Miller, charging Maher with the larceny of $597 from the complainant in September last. Maher wis employed, as Miller alleges, as a clerk for him, when the substitute business was profitable. One day Maher called on Miller for the money in ques- tion, saying he wanted to put in some substi- tutes. The money was given him by Miller, and Maher went away, and telegraphed 'to Miller from Baltimore that he did not want to beat him out of the money; but he had = got drunk and = lost it, Detective Rigeley went to. Baltimore imme- diately and arrested Maher and brought him to Washingiow. Mr. R. Edwards became re- sponsible for the money and the prosecution ceased. Maher went away promising to re- turn intwo weeks and pay the money. He did not come forward. according to promise, and in the meantime Miller obtained evidence to show that Maher had, previous to obtaining the money, said he intended to beat Miller out ofit.
