THE EVENING STAR. —— See 7t or PROPLE.—The average returns wea tigen Of the *world, on the first appearance in public, weighs about Sear be 499 ahalfa baby a little more, } baby. little less. e very modes turn the scale with two pounds and a half, while other pretentious youngsters boast often andeleven pounds. When Skylock asked for his “pound of flesh,” he asked for an equivalent toa little less than one-sixth of & baby. How the tiny ones grow during child- heod we need not trace here; but it may be in- teresting to know that boys and girlg of twelve years of age are nearly equal in weight, site ‘Which limit, males are heavier than males of the same.age. Young men of twenty average one hundred and forty-three pounds each, while young women of twenty average one hendred and twenty pounds. Men reach their heaviest bulk at about thirty-five, when their average weight is about one hundred aad fifty-two pounds; but women slowly fatten until fifty when their average weight is one hundred and twenty-nine pounds. Men and ‘women together, their, weight at full growth averages almost one hundred and forty pounds. Fuil-grown menand women average abont twenty times as heavy as they were on the first day of their existence. Of course, aver- ages are here only meant. The averages are formed from men weighing one hundred and eight to two hundred augiwenty pours, and women from eighty-eight to two hundred an@ seven pounds. The actual weight of human nature, taking all ages and conditions, nobles, clergy, tinkers, tailors, Wives, maidens, boys, girls, and babies, all. inclnded—the average weight is almost one hundred English pounds avordupois for each human being. Ron Dex Clorus—I was once so ill-in- formed, says a writer in an exchange, of the fine arts, as not te know what an iron dish cloth was. But seeing one in use at the house of a friend, I learned from a Swiss gentleman who had presented it to her, that they were in general use in his native country, and he had aecidentally seen a cask full at an importer’s, which were unsalable in New York, and had become rusty and looked upon as oldiron. I procured a dozen and distributed them among my friends. They soon became bright from use, and are universally classed among those articles which “we wonder how we ever did without.” These aresmade of rings of iron wire, No. 15, linked together, and are about six inches square; I counted fifteen rings on one edge. One outside row of rings is only con- nected with the other at each end and one in*b or two in nei which makes two loops to hang it eo, tener maid who has scoured the in- or ontside of a kettle with it, pronounce it better than scraping with a knife, or scouring with cloth and sand. They are very flexible, and I imagine must be like chain armor which I have read of but never seen. We also find it useful to put under a potor kettle hot from the stove, when we wish to pui them on the table. We have used ours two years. é « A TovcH oF PETROLEUM.—Close to the lands of the Centre Oil Company there lives an old chap worth a mint. Ignorant, of course, dumb luck hasmade him rich. His household pets constitute of a terrier dog and a stupid daughter, both of whom engage his attention. The former provided for, he determined to “ac- complish” his daughter. To this end he came to the city. He bought a piano, a harp, a guitar, and acar load of music books, and so forth, winding up his business by engaging a first-class intellectual and music tutor, with all of which hé started for the “region.” The documents were of comrse soon arranged for business. The tutor set to work like a Trojan, bnt with no success. Despairing of ultimate triumph, he went tothe oi] king and made a clean breast of it. “Why, what the world’s the maiter !”" asked the father. « Well, * answered the tutor, « Kitty has a piane, and guitar, and harp, and music, and books, and all that, but she wants capacity— that’s all.” “Well, by the Lord, Harry,” cried the oil king, “if that is all just buy it. I've got the stuff, and if money will get it she shall have capacity or anybing else. ‘Wat THE TELEGRAPH DED TO A MINISTER.— Of all the freaks of bee oe es following is the most laughable ich come under our personal owledge. Not long since a graduate from one of our Eastern theological schools was called tothe pastoral charge of a church in the extremé Southwest. When bout to start for his new parish he was unex- pees. detained by the incapacity of his ‘esbytery to ordain him. In order to explain his non-arrival at the appointed time, he sent the following telegram to the deacons of the church: “Presbytery lacked a quorum to otdain.” In the course of its journey the message got strangely metamorphosed. and reached the astomished deacons in this shape: « Presbytery tacked a worm on to Adam.” The sober church officers were greatly discom- posed and mystified, but after grave consulta- tion concluded it was the minister's facetious Way ofannouncing that he had got married and. accordingly proceeded to provide lodgings for two instead of one.—Boston Traveller. @7 Passengers getting out of acar have a legal precedence over those getting into a car.
