Matinee this afternoon. ——_e—_— Scnoon ExaMINATIONS:—The public school examinations were continued yesterday is fol- dows: Secondary No. 1, (Female,) First. District, Miss Fannie E. Hoover teacher, was examined by Mr. Brown. Twenty-three scholars have been transferred tO a higher school during the past year, and quite a numberof new pupils admitted, making the number now on the roll 62, allot whom were present except two, de- tained by sickness. The examination. which Was very thorough and satisfactory, was con- ducted in the presence of a larger. number of spectators than haye assembled before at an ex- amination in the first district. The first and second classes in spelling and dictation were very proficient and were complimented by the examiner. The scholars of this school have never studied grammar. The first class has re- ceived & number of oral lessons from Mr. Rich- ards, who examined them in the rudiments of grammar with the most satisfactory results. ‘The singing of the school was very fine. Secondary No. 2, (Male,) First District, Miss M-~P. Slater teacher, which is held in the school house at the corner of 14th and O streets, num- bers 60 scholars, flve of whom were absent. This school was greatly disorganized when iss Slater took charge of it, owing to the sick- ness and death of its former teacher, but it has been brought up again to its proper standard. ‘The school is divided into five classes, all of whieh were subjected toa close examination by Mr. Wilson in reading, spelling, dictation, writing, ciphering. &c., in 81 of which studies the scholars appeared to be well advanctd, Male Grammar S¢ehool, Second District, Mr. Wilson, teacher, is located in the engine house corner 6th and L streets, and was to have been examined by Messrs. Miller, Rhees, Wight, ‘Tustin, Hitz and Ellis, but one of whom, Mr. Miller, was present. The same was the case with the female grammar school of Miss Boggs on Thursday, with the exeeption that Mr. Brown assisted Mr. Miller on that occasion. Mueb disappointment was manifested in the schools that the Board of Trustees manifested so little interest in. their progress. The male grammar school nses the same school books as sre employed in the female grammar school, mentioned yesterday, namely: Algebra, com- mon scu.col, ancient and physical geography, nes composition, rhetoric, botany, philoso- phy, astronomy, physiolog urveying, book- keeping, music, &c. Prof. Daniel mined the school in the latter, with very results. The classes in the other s hibited much proficiency, and were warmly commended. maletntermediate. Third District, taught “Miss Francis Elvans, in the Wallach School Buildimg, was examined by Messrs. Walsh and Stuart. This school numbers 36 pupils. 35 of whom were present. The read- ing of the first class was very good; the spell- ing good, punetuation, use of capitals, and ab- breviations good; dictation excellent; arithme- tic (mental and written) very good; geography good, and grammar extra, ‘he reading of the second class was very good; spelling fair; etmation very good. use of capitals passa- ble; dictation extra; geography passable, and arithmetic good. The singing of the pupils was quite a feature. Taig SPUR Center Marker, T Beef, best cv per lt next, 25e.: Salt, Beek, 15alsi Beet, 2 Veal, 25a30c.. Mutton, chops, 23 Lamb, per Ib. 25c.
