Primary, No.2, (female,) First District, is held in the tpird-story of the large brick build- ing on the corner of i9th street and Pennsyl- Vania avenue,in a room with two other scheols, which greatly interferes with the proper train- ing of the scholars, but the laborious efforts of Miss Emily Robinson, the teacher, in instruct- ing those entrusted to her care, (of wnom there are sixty-two little girls ) have been fol- lewed by good success Mr. Brown con- «cucted the examination of the various classes im orthography, abreviations, rules tor capital ietters, speliing, dictation, geography, mental and practical arithmatic, &c., and expressed catisfaction with the progress of the upils. Secondary, No 5, First District, Miss D. B. Allen teacher, was thoroughly examined by Dir. Wilson, in the presence of a goodly num. ber of visitors, relatives and friends of the scbolars, of whom there are sixty-two on the rolls of the school, sixty being present. The scholars showed good average progress in ali ihe branches taught, with every prospect of continued improvement. The scholars number sixty, fifty-eight of whom were present, and who were examined by Mr. Miller in the usual studies of the primary schools, with encouraging results Primary No 5, Second District, Miss Duvall teacher, also for boys, is situated on the corner of Massachusetts avenue and 5th street, and Dumbers (0 scholars, 50 of whom were in at- zerdagce. The examination was conducted by Mr. Rhees, who briefly addressed the boys, and intimated that some of them would be transferred to the Secondary Schools. Primary No.6, Second Districi, Miss Abell teacher, was examined by Mr. Wight. This School is located on the corner of 10th and E streets, A basement illy suited to its present use There are 16 scholars, boys and girls, iL of whom were present. The examination passed of quite pleasantly, with the exception of some alarm on the part of the younger chil- dren during the rain storm, there having been several | a er in the building anda grand» rush each time from apprehension of its fall.’ Such tears however are groundless. Primary No. 3, Third District, taught in the upper story of Nottingham’s building, oa L street south, bear the canal, by Miss Mary Aukward, was examined by Mr. Farguson in their studiesia the presence of Aldermaa Gulick, Mr. F. Primary No. 4, Third District, tanght ie Diss Eliza J. Wheatley, in the Mission Uhapel, on ist street east, below B street south, was examined by Mr. F.S. Walsh, Jr., in place of his father, who was unavoidably absent, and the scholars, 52 of the on the roll being present, 5 of thosa absent being sick, acquitted themselves in a creditable manner in the branches usually taught in the primary schools. Considering the school is composed ef boys and the teacher young the order was admirable. But few of the scholars at the first of the year were beyond their A B U's, yet the majority can now read fairly. Primary No. 5, Third District, taught by Miss Elizabeth Allen, on the first floor of the building occupied by No.3, was examined by Mr. Hitz, and of the 60 girls whose names are on the roll 57 were present, those absent being sick. In the third class the reading was good and tables tolerable. in the second class the arithmetic and reading and spelling were very good. The first class in spelling, abreviations and rules was very good, the arithmetic gocd and reading fair, tables iair. This year, the secona in which Miss Alien has been engaged as a teacher, some 15 scholars will be transferred. The order was admirable and the singing would bare done credit to girls of a larger growth. Primary No. 1, (female,) Fourth District, Miss Josephine A.
