Richards for aid in recoyering her daugbter, ed 16 years, who had eloped and Married asoldier, and who she believed was in Washington ata house of prostitution. The dady produced a likeness, which was instantly TFecognized by Detectives Olarvoe and Mc- Devitt as that of a young girl they had seen at No. 450 13th street, between C and D. Supt Richards at once sent Detectives Claryoe and McDevitt m search of the fugitive. At No. 490 they learned that she had gone to some Hospital for the treatment of diseased females of that class. After searching various houses ot infamy the detectives proceeded to the pest house kept by a notorious old negro woman named Julia Fleet, on 3d street, between Mary- dand avénue and B street south, and as their carriage stopped at the door they recognized ahe object of their search, pale and em unciated, Seated at the window. Upon entering ‘he Ronse the Officers witnessed a scene disgrace- ful in the @xtreme. In a darg, close room “were squatted a number of negroes, male and female, and soldiers playing cards upon their knees for lack of a table or a spare stool: and & number of sick prostitutes were lying round. The proprietress is, we believe, in jail, awaiting a trial on some charge, and an old deformed negro woman was acting in her Stead. She locked the door of the room in which the girl was gathering up her cloth refusing the) officers admission to the room. ‘The oflicers, by a little legal suasion, induced her to permit the girl to be taken away, and she was carried to the police headquarters. The distress of the mother when the wasted figure of her once beantiful daughter was brought into her presence, was heartrending even to those accustomed to scenes of distress. ‘The daughter said she was persuaded to leave her mother and come to this city, and was Married to asoldier named Mott, about eight months ago, since which time she had not seen him. She was very indifferent about returning home until she was brought into the presence of her mother, when she relented, exhibited much penitence, and cheerfully consented to go home, and left in the evening train with her mother. Julia Fleet, the proprietress of the pest house where she was found, has been notorious in Washington fer thirty years past as & prostitute and a sort of doctress for afflicted females of her class, and the disgrace- Tui establishment fs a source of constant trou- ble to the police. ene River News.—There has been but little busi- mess doing at any of the wharves—Govyern- mment or private—within the past tew days, sind there are but few vessels in port this morning.
