THE EVENING STAR. | THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION. | (i. Wyte Ste | 7 nici nade kL. GEN. SHERMAN’S FAREWELL AD- DRESS. Geveral Sherman left en Wednesday for New York and the West. The following is his | farewell address to bis ary: i Hrapquarters, MIpDLE Diviston or THE | MicsissiPPi, 1N THB Fighp, WASHINGTON, VD. | ©., May 30, 1°65—Srgctat Fietp Orpers, | No 7¢.—The General commanding announces | tothe Armies ef the Tennessee and (zeorgis | tDatthe time bas come for us to part. Oar work is done, snd srmed enemies no longer defy us. Scmeof you will be retained in ser- vice nntil further orders. Andnow that we | are abont to separate, to mingle with tne civil i world, it becomes a pleasing duty to re call to mind the situation of national affairs when. but \ little more than a year ago, we were gathered | about the twining cliffs of Lookout Monn‘ain. | and al} the tuture was wrapped in doubt and | Uncertainty. Three armies had come together | from distant fleids, with separate Ristories. yet | bound together by one common cause—the | union of our country and the perpetuation of the goverrment of our inheritance. There is no need to recallto your memories Tunnel Bill, with its Rocky Face Mountain, and Buz H zard Roost Gap, with the ugly forts of Daiton | bebind. We were im earnest, and pansed not | for danger and difficulty, but dashed through | Snake Creek Gap. and fell on Ressacca, then | to Etowah, to Dallas, Kennesa and the | beats of summer found us on the banks of the | Chattahoochee, far from home and dependent | on @ cipgle road for supplies. Again we were potto be Deld back by any obstacle, and | crossed over and fought four heavy battles | forthe possession of the citadel of Atlan That was the crisis of our history. A doubt still! clouded our future; but we solved the problem, and destroyed Atlanta, struck boldly | Across 'be State of Georgia, secured all the | main arteries of life to the exemy, and Christ- | mas found us at Savannah. giting there only long enough to fill our wagons, weagain | began a march, which for peril, labor. and re- | sults, will compare with any ever made by an organized army. The floods of the Savannah, | ; the swamps of the Combahee and Edisto, the | bigh bills and rocks of the Santee, the fiat | quagmires of the Pedee and Cape Fear rivers, | Were all passed in midwinter, with its floods | and rains, in the face ef an accumulating | enemy; and sfter the battles of Averashoro | and Bentonsville we once more came ont of the wilderness to meet our friends at Golds- boro. Even then we paused only long enough | to get new clothing, to reload our wagons, and sgain push on to Raleigh, and veyond, till tour enemy, sueing for peace, instead | , and offering to submitto the injured | laws of her and our country. As long as that — enemy was defiant, nor meuntains nor rivers | nor hunger nor cold had checked us; but when | he who had fought us hard and persistenly | offered submission, your General thought it | ‘wrong to pursue him further, the negetiations followed which resulted,as you all know, in his surrender. How far the operations of the | army have contributed to the overthrow of the confederacy, of the peace which now dawns Upon us, Must be judged by others, not by us. But that you have done all that men couid do bas been admitted by those in authority; and ‘we bavea right to join in the universal joy that fills our land because the war is over, and our government stands vindicated betore the world by the joint actionof the volunteer armies of the United States. Tosuch as remainin the military service, your General need only to remind you that | successes in the pastaredue to hard work and discipline, and thatthe same;work and dicipline, are eqaally important in the future. To such &s go home, he will only say, that our favored country is so grand,so extensive, so diversified in climate, soil and productions, that every man may surely finda home and occupation suited to his tastes; and none should yield to the natural impotence sure to result from our past life of excitement and ad- | venture. You will be invited to seek new ad- venture abroad, but do not yield to the temp- tation, for it will lead only to death and dis- appointment. ‘Your General now bids you all farewell, ‘with the full belief that, asin war you have been good soldiers, so in peace you will make good citizens. and if. unfortunately, new war should arise in our country, Sherman’s army Will be the first to buckle on the old armor and come forth to defend and maintain the govern- ment of our Inheritance and choice. By order of Major General W. T. Sherman, L. M. Darron, Ass’t Adj’t Gen’l. @7 The Directors of the Philadelphia Mint gives notice that the bronze one and two. and the nickel three cent coins, can now be had at the Mint, withont delay or limitation as to amount, in exchange for gold or silver coins, or lega) tender notes of the United States. The new three cent piecesare putup in bags of thirty dollars éach, and this sum or any larger amonnt of which thirty isa multiple, will bs gent when ordered. Rasonable expenses of transportation in sums of thirty dollars or up- ‘wards, to any point accessible by railroad or steamboat, will be paid by the mint. The Adams Express Company will act as agents for parties orderizg cents, &c., and the coins ordered will be forwarded when the money is received. i] | \ | Crops in West VirnGinta.—We learn from our country friends, that the prospect for an abundant crop was never more flattering than at present The wheat cropis said to look unprecedently promising. Our farmers, avail. ing themselves of the forwardness of tne season, generally planted their corn early aud their crops are growing finely. Such luxu- Tiant grass as we have is not surpassed any- where. We predict an abundant ciop this | season of ceresis and grass.—('larkeburg Tele- graph. S7 A singular accident happened in Spring- | field, Mass., the other day. A five-feet drive- | whee! for a locomotive, just from the foundry | was lightly tapped with a hammer by & | werkmn, when it burst, and a portion of the Tim apd several spokes, in nearly a quarter | of the entire wheel, flew some fifteen feet, bat fortunately injuring nobody. SF The first vessel since the exportation of horses and mules was prohibited left New Haven, Tuesday, for the West Indies, witha cargo of horses and mules.
