Lee’s army, have returned to Richmond. They were arrested in Balti- more anid committed to jail, and obtained their Sia only upon condition of returning Sonth. e 20th army corpsof, Gen. W. T. Sber- ™MA&n’s army, is reported tO have reached the suburbs of Manchester yesterday, aud joinee the lith corps. We are not informed as to what day the army will commence its pas- ssge through the city, but we presume it will occurip adayortwo. Meanwhile the 2d and Sth corps of Gen. Grant’s army is moving on Washington. We understand that the Richmond and Baltt- more line of steamers, which, before the war, plied between this portand Baltimore, will shortly resume regular trips. Mr. Brandt, of Baltimore, is President of the line, with the old Board of Directors. The Company has now a Bew steamer building, and It will be afloat in & short time. The steamers Belvidere and Peabody were favorite boats upon this line betore the revellion diverted them to the uses of war. The necessary permission for the resumption of the business of this line has been obtained trom the department at Wash- ipeton. From special orders No. 10, issued by Major General Halleck, it willbe seen that all rail- roads in the Department of Virginia, when no longer required fer military purposes, will, with their rolling stock, material, and mi- chinery, be turned over to the officers of their respective companies, provided that such officers having control of the railroads, have | taken the oath of allegiance to the United Stares. But such delivery will not prevent | the forfeiture of @ny stock in said companies | which may be owned by persons who do not | come within the proyisious of the amnesty proclamation. GENERAL CONFERENCE, METHODIST PROT- EFTANT CHURCH —Afternoon Session.—Yester- Gay afternoon at 3 o’clock the Conterence was called to order by the President, and religious service Was conducted by Rey. D, A. Shere mer. Kev. L. W. Bates, from the committee on cer- t.ficates, reported that the laws of the Church presented au obstacle to the receptior. of Messrs. Clark and Perry, of the Wabash District, as representatives of that District upon the cer- tficates presented) The applicants were not | selected by the Annual Conference of the Wa- | bash District but by the District Committee. | In the case of A. Parrish, of Des Moines Mis- sion, there is no rule of the Church entitling Mission to @ representativein the General Uon- | ference. The committee recommend the re- | tion of the brethren from the Wabash Dis- | as honorary members, and ot Brother ish as a Messenger from Des Moines Mis- | a. The certificate of Brother Orestes Ames, | of Lilinots, is correct, except the omission of a signature, which will be supplied upon the ar- rival of the Ministerial representative. { On motion of Rey. J. K. Nichola, the report | was accepted. Rev. Mr. Perry, of Wabash, stated the pe- | Culisr circumstances of his election. i Rey. Mr Bates, in reply, said that the rule was so clear that they could rot consistently | admit the Brethren in any other way than as | honorary members, no matier how much they | regretted the necessity under the peculiar cir | cams‘ances. Since the last session u/ the Gen- eral Conference & ministerial and alay delegate belonging to the Maryland delegation had died. If the law had permitted, the vacancies might Dave been filled, but in view of the law tke places are vacant. That delegation can not consistently vole for the admission of others without certificates of legalelection. The ad- of the Brethren as honorary members em the privilege of discussion, but not vorlng Of introducing resolutions. Mr. Parrish, of Des Moimes, said he did not, ard be was sure those who sent him did not expect the General Conference to depart from | its strict rules. American. The ‘Manly Art’? Among the School Girls. The town, and especially that portion of it embraced in the Baptist persuasion, has been in a ferment for several days, over a spirited “mill,” which took place be.ween a couple of young lady pupils of the Baptist Seminary one day last week. A fair, daughter of «Maryland, my Maryland,”—a handsome, volatile, spite- ful young lady of sixteensummers, or sucha matter, &n irrepressible rebel—was guilty of the bad taste of cheering tor Jeff. Davis, in a mixed assembly. A young lady of this city, equally Ae PECy, as the Maryland rebel, but of & quiet, undemonstrative turn of mind, told her she had better not do that again, or it would cost her a thrashing. The little rebel again cheered for J. D., louder and more defiantly than ever, where- upon the city girl ‘went for her” as the phrase is, anda well contested trial of pugilisticskill began. “Long time in even scale the battle hung,” hairand hairpins, fragments of lace and torn rufties, broken combs, ear rings, brooches, and artificial flowers, terribly mussed and mangled strewed the sceneof combat. At jJast loyal muscle triumphed over rebellious pluck and science. The loyal girl succeeded in getting ber opponent's head in that uncom- fortable position designated, in the nomencla- ture of the P. R.as “chancery.” With a heroism worthy Of a better cause, the rebel took fearful punishment” for a time and then bleated for quarter. The Union girl ‘set her up” on condition that she would publicly re- cant and take the oath. When the blood was wasied away, it was discovered that two blue eyes had éuddenly become black, and that her “face divine” was, to borrow the expressive language of Mis. Wizzle, ‘scored like pork.” The little rebel, whose name is Laney, has been excused from the further proseeution of her studies in this quarter, with full permission to retufn to her beloved Maryland by the earliest train. NOTICED AT JEFF. DAVIS’ CHUROH. [London Times’ Richmond Correspon. dence.] __ Upon the arrival of General Lee’s despatch in Richmond, President Davis was occupying his accustomed seat during morning service in the Charch of St. Paul’s, in which church, ferved by the same clergyman, the Prince of sion of his visit to Kichmond, and the Presi- dent was surrounded by a congregration, of which the fairer portion was, as usual, ar- rayed with an elegance which has long been an unfailing source of wonder to those who reflect upon Richmond's four years of block- ade. Suddenly the sexton approaching Pres- ident handed tohim a paper, which was as slowly perused. Rising trom his seat with singular gravityand deliberation, Mr. Davis several prominent citizens were, by the same sexton, summoned to follow him. It will be believed that the excitement among those who remained was atits highest, remarked by sly ob:ervers that the excellent clergyman, who has endeared him- self to his congregation by four vears of brave and hearty sympathy with toeir trials, did not omit to make the usual collection, Pposgibly with the design of impressing upon his con- gregation that nothing unusua! had happened. possibly to give credit w 4 currency from which all felt that every semblance of value wes passing away.
