Bickley and W. Burke, appointed at a meet- ing of the colored people of Alexandris, waited on President Johnson and presented a petition -asking that as the military rule in that elty Was about to be withdrawn, and the inhabi- tants again placea under the civil laws, the “protection of the Government Might be ex- tended to them (the colored people) against the operation of the unjust and oppressive laws phe bial aes sumer previous to the jon oO: e cit, the U.S. i Authorities, sila Me seaateary The committee was cordially received by the President, who ref:rred their petition to the ‘War Department, with the hope expressed that immediate action be taken on the same. On Monday they were informed that their re- quest had been granted, so that the relations of the colered people ot Alexandria to the national Government remain unchanged. i a PORTRAIT OF PRESIDENT JOHNSON.—The first portrait in oil made of President Johnson since he has been called tothe Chief Magis- tracy, is now receiving the finishing touches at the hands of the artist, Mr. J. W. Dodge, of New York. On Mr. Johnson being inaugu- Fated Mr. Dodge at once came to this city tor the purpose of painting this picture, and the President has given him several sittings. The portrait is of large cabinet size, and is pro- nounced by al! who have seen it as admirable, both asa tikeness and asa picture. The ex- celience of the expression is due in some de- etee to the fact of Mr. Dodge having been fa- miliar with the features of the President for years; he having resided near Mr. Johnson in Tennessee, from whence he was obliged to fly At the breaking ont of the rebellion, leaving all Ris property. SS Messrs. LANspvreu & Bro., Nos. 375 and 51S Seventh street, haye just received a mag- muiticent stock of spring and summer goods, in- cluding basques, c:rculars, sacques, and Eng- lish jackets, for ladies and misses; rich black and colored Mike, shawls, and other dress goods; parasols, domestic cottons, linens, &c. ‘This extensive assortment, from the large New York auction sales, is offered at exceedingly low rates, and should be examined before pur- chasing elsewhere. Ball, indicted for larceny. Jam For Courkt.—Richard Dade, colored, ‘was arrested yesterday for the larceny of a vest from J. Grady, tailor. Sergeant Skippon took bim before Justice Thompson, when it appeared in evidence that the prisoner went into the shop of complainant on pretense of Wanting to purchase a coat. While talking ‘with the tailor, he managed to slipa vest under his coat. Some ap- pear tohaye jumped into their clothes, they @re such ill-fitting articles, while others sit enugiy on the wearer, setting the form off to ats best advantage. (zentlemen owe it tothem- selves, and to a cultivated ‘public taste, to ob- tain clothing answering the latter description, which can always be done by getting Smith & Bro., 7th street, to make their clothing.
