New York, May 2.—The steamer Guiding Star bas arrived here from New Orleans, having left there on the 25thut. The rebel ram Webb passed New Urleans under a heavy fire from the war yeesels, ihe Lackawanna sending a two hundred and fifty ponnd shot through her bows. The Hoillyhock, Lieutenant Commander Gherardi, was ready to follow, and kept close upon the track of the Webb anti! twenty-eight miles below the city. The rebels saw the sloop-ot-war Richmond ready for action, and turned for the shore, the Hollyhock going straigbtat her. The Webb’s officers and crew fired her in several places and fied to the swamps. Boats from the Hollyhock boarded her and saved one man, who had been abandoned asleep. They were unable to put ont the fiames, from the inflamabie nature of the cargo and fear of the explosion of the mac@mine. The Webb was armed with three guns, ene 4 thirty-two-pounder. She was commanded by Reed. Two of the crew have given themselves up. A GENERAL CONPERENCE.—By & notice in the Baltimore Methodist Protestant, weare in- formed that the general conference ¢f the Methodist Protestant Church will assembie in Georgetown on the lvth instant. Im 1982 thie body wis to have assembled, but there being nO quorum, (the delegates from the Maryland Annual Conference ouly being present, we be- lieve.) the meeting was adjourned to await the cali of the Maryland delegation, and the ne- tice in the official paper is that call. In the fall of the year Is6¥, the Northern and Western Conterences met in convention, and dissolved their connection with the conferences in the Rebellious States, and declared them. selves the Methodist Protestant Church in the United States. Since the beginning of the re- bellion the Maryland Annual Conferenes, which was not represented in the convention, has, Asa body, persistently avoided any ex- pression of opinion upon the question of loyal- ty, and maintained a reticent policy through. cut. As it is probable that the eset fees dele- gates will constitute a majority in the ap- proaching general conference, it hoped by the loyal members of the churches that the body will speak out upon that question, arts a Alexandria Affairs. THE FIRiInG oF MOND —LETTER YROM GgNERAL EwxLt.—The following isan ex- tract of a letier from the rebel General Ewell, explaining the partial burring, etc., of Rich- mond, during its evacuation by the rebel army. I had tetd the principal citizens, months before, what would happen, and arged them to form & constabniary ferce to keep order. But they would not, only three persone offering their services, when there were hun- dreds doing nothing. ‘Che fire hose was cut, and the arsenal burned by the mob. To prevent mis. statements as regards our capture, I would elate that we were ordered to fellow Ander- fon; thatafier driving back an attack on our wagons we found Arderson cut off from those of Lee’s army in front, and the 6th corps came after me, attacking my troops. Anderson failed, after a trial, in breaking through those in his front; and my men, entirely surrounded, fighting over ten times their number, were captured or slain.” THR PREMCTION oF NosrTRADMAUA.—Most of our readers will recollect that at the com- mencement of the present civil war the fol- lowing prediction of Nostradamus, which, it is said can be found in the second volame of his “‘Uenturies,” was greatly published in the | papers “About that time (1561) a great quarrel and controversy will arise in a country beyond the seas (America,) and many poor devils will be hung, and many poor wretches will be killed by a puuishment other than a cord. Upon my faith you may believe me, the war wi last feur years, at which none should be surprised or astonished, for there will be no want of hatred and obstinacy init. Attheend of that time, prostrate and almost raioed, the people will re-embrace each other in great joy and love.” z Nostradamus was & French physician, phi- losopher and prophet, born in 1533 who, after meeting with great success in the first named capacity, turned his attention to sstrology, and in 1555, who published nis «“Qenturies,” a work of predictions. In 1568 he foretold the remarkable death of Henry I., which took place ata louanament in the spring of 1559, and is said also to have predicted the death of Charles L., of England, Louis XVI., and the elevation of Napoleon to the empire of France.
