Also, another from the same, transmitting the claims of sundry parties for repairs on certain arches in the streets, amounting in the aggregate to & Teferred to the committee on streets. Also,from Wm. Whelan, asking an increase ot compensation ffom two-and-a-half to tour | dollars per tap, for tapping water mains, Referred to committee on water. The bills of the Washington Chronicle and National Intelligencer for advertising, were pre- sented and referred to the eommittee on claims. A communication was also presented from Cierk of the Corporation, asking an interpre- tation of the Inw of Congress relating to the distribution of the colored school fund. Re- ferred to the committee of ways and means. The petition of Thos. K. Woodward, asking thathe be not required to pay certain taxes while the Corporation remains in debt to him for services as Coroner, was referred to the committee on grievances. The said committee was discharged from the | further comsideration of the petition of Eliza | Taylor. Resolutions to pave east Market Space; to pay certain bills incurred im the observance of the occasion of the funeral of the late Presi- dent, Mr. Lincoln: reducing the number of hours for the use of gas in the public lamps to 1,700 per year; authorizing the Mayor to con- tract with Henry Wingate for the repair of the fish market over the canal; exempting the Western Star hose building from taxation; ap- propriating $500 for the repair of paved streets: and imstructing the Clerk of the Corporation to defer the payment of the school fund to the Trustees of the Public Schocls until further action by the Corporation, were passed. Mr. Stake made a verbal report from the committee on the Poor and Work House, stating that the contract for the repair of the barn and other appurtenances of the poor house had been awarded to J. H. & A. G. Paul, at $550. A resolution from the Board of Aldermen, authorizing the sale of stalls ot the new market bouse a the market house committee on the fourth Monday in May next, at the rate of $30 each per year, for a period of ten years, was amended so as to place their sale in the hands of the Mayor instead of the committee, and passed.
