THE EVENING STAR. ANDY JOHNSON'S “SPUNK.”’ ‘When we were at Nashville, seven years ago Anecdotes of the coolness and courage of Goy- ernor Johnson were among the current coin of Sonent of the Govertor, an eys witne se of the mt of the , ess of the Occurrence, told us that a placard was ited in the town, one morning, announcing, Ee"the ‘well-known language old , that Andy Johnson was to be shot “on sight.” Friends of the Governor assembled at his Bouse to escort him to the State House. “No,” asidhe, “gentlemen, if I am to be shot at, I ‘want DO man to be in the way of the bullet.” He walked algne, and with unusual delibera- tion, through fhe streets to his official apart- ments on Capitol Hill. piother eye witness related a Capa © was announced to speak on on! 34 citing questions of the aay, and loud threats ‘Were uttered that, if he dared to appear, he should not leave the hall alive. At the appoint- ed hour, he ascended to the platform, and ad- ‘vanced to the desk, laid his pistol upon it. He then addressed the audience, in terms as near like the following 48 our informant could recol- dect: «Fellow- citizens, it is pro when freemen asserablefor the discussion of important public interests, that everything should be done decently and in order. I have been informed that part of the business to be transacted on the present oecasion is the assassination of the in- dividual who now has the honor of addressing you. I beg respectfully te pri that this be the first business in order. Therefore, if any man has come here to-night for the fpurpose indicated, I do notsay to him let him speak, but iet him shoot.” Here he paused, with his right hand on his pistol. and the other holding open his coot, while with hiseyes he blandly surveyed the assembly. Aiter a pause of half a minute, he resumed : + “Gentlemer, it appears that 1 have been misinformed. I will now proceed to address yon on the subject that has called us together.’’ Which he did, with his accustomed boldness and vivacity, not sparing his adversaries, but giving them plenty of pure Tennessee. Tailor as he was, he isno snob. Soon after he was inaugurated Governor of Tennessee, & nigh official of the State, who had been bred a Diacksmith, presented him with a set of slegant fire-irons, made with his own hands. “I will give him 4 return in kind,” remarked the Goy- ernor. He bought some of the finest black broad cloth Nashville could furnjsh, procured @ set of tailor’s implements, got the judge’s measure from his tailor, and made acomplete suit of clothes, settingevery stitch himself, and presented them to his friend. The work, we are told, was all done in the Governor's room im the State House. The happy wearer of the garments pronounced them a perfect fit,and when we heard the story, in 185s, he had them still.—wN. F. Review. Baltimere Markets, April 25.
