LES Information reachea tre niver xranspuria- tion office yesterday afternoon that the side- Wheel stermer Massachusetts, Capt. Couch; while bound down to Fortress Monroe on San- day night with some three hundred soldiers from Alexandria, who were to be returned to their regiments, collided with the propeller | Bisck Diamond, Capt. Meredith, off Biack- iston’s Island, on the Potcmac river. The Massachusetts was badly damaged, her | bows being stove in near the water line, and the soldiers on board of her thinking that she | ‘was shout to sink. a large number of them Sprang over her sides and succeeded in getting on board of the Black Diamond, which had hauled upto render assistance, it being sup- posed atthe time by the Captain of the Dia- mond that the Massachusetts was the only vessel that hed sustained any damage. Unfortunately however, the Black Diamond had been struck amidship, which caused her to take fu water rapidly, andshe went down in & few moments ser the soldiers had got on board of her. Sixty-six of the soldiers from the Massachn- setts, and four of the crew of tte Black Dia- mond, sre Missing, aud it is believed that they ‘were all drowned. Last night Captain Allen dispatched a steam propeller down the river to the scene of the disaster, with men and hooks on board to eearch for the bodies of those supposed to be lost. The Massachusetts, atter the Black Diamond went down, succeeded in reaching Point Look- outin safety, where she landed the remainder of her troops. The Black Diamond was a@ second-class steam propeller, chartered by the (uarter- master’s Department, and belonged to Phila- Gelphia, where she is owned. A DESPICABLE IN UATION The New York Tribune insinuates that a jury could not be obtained in Washington city to do adequate justice tothe murderer of Abra- bam Lincoln, and that the venue should be changed. This is coolly impudent, as well as false: coming from the copperhead, negro-hanging, draft-resisting city of New York, whose lock. Ups at this moment have not sufficient capac- ity to hold the traitors whe have openly ex- pressed their exultation in the streets of that city over the assassination of Abraham Lip- coln. ‘We venture to say that ne community in the country nas felt a sincerer grief over ihe death | of the late President than that of Washington Nowhere else was he co warmly esteemed personally. This peor city, whose entire wealth 1s over- topped by single blocks in New York city, of- fered promptly the sum of $20,000 for the ap- prehension of the assassin. What has the ‘wealthy city of New York offered? Not one cent! What has the great State of New York of- aered? Not one cent! To any person familiar with the temper and feeling of the people of this city in regard to the assnasination ot one they looked upon more gn the light ef a warm personal friend than any President who had preceded him, the only doubt would be whetber the assassin would be permitted to come to trial at all with life in Bim. Much of this wicked misrepresentation in regard to the patriotism of the majority of the people of Washing’on is due to the mis- chievyous uttertoces and slurs against this community of & paper which, though pro. fessediy published here, isowned and appa- rently conducted elsewhere, and shows as little sympathy with, aud knowledge of our people as the New York T-ibune even. @There are copperheads and traitors in this city, a8 there are copperheads and traitors in Philadelphia aud New York, but the great body ef the people of Washing:on are actuated by a8 pure ® patriotism as any commanity in tne land, and it is quite time that papers of Tespectability should cease to allow the use of their columns to every shoddy scribbler who bas A spite to ventilate against Washington city and its inhabitants. It has been ascer- tained that the £500.000 stated to have been borrowed by Jrff. Davis from the Virginia | banks, wae obtained through the agency of | surplus William, and in-a way that would | bring that individual liable to the suspicion of | theft. In addition to this, it is also stated now, | eimee the flight of Smith, that he converted a | large portion of the money to his own use. It | 18 stated that he and Bennett, First Auditor of the State of Virginia, (rebel,) tried to lug off over $100,000 of the money for their own use, and getting up the canal as far as Buckingham county, scatiered it on the wayside, placing some in the jail of that county, where it has | since been found. The money, if ever recoyv- ered, would belong to the loyal note holders of the banks from which it was ‘‘borrowed.” We are unable tosay who Extra Billy would be- long to if caught under the inspiration of the | reward which Gov. The officers detailed by General Granger and myself were met by the Mayor and other authorities near the entrance of the city, andthe demand for its surrender was there made. The parties then repaired to the City Hall, where the Mayor addressed the following commuunica- tion: “MATOR's OrPicr, CITY OF MOBILE, April 14, 1505.—Gentiemen -—I have the honor to ace knowledge the receipt of your communication at the bands of Lieut. Colonel R.G. Laughiin, staif of Malor General Granger, commanding 13th army corps, and Lieutenant Commander S.R. Franklin, U.S. Navy, staff of Admiral Thatcher, demanding the immediave and un- conditional surrender of this city. The city has been evacuated by the mil!tary authori- tes, and its municipal authority is now within my control. Your demand has been granted, and I trust, gentlemen, for the sake of bumani- ty, all the safeguards you can throw around our people will be secured to them. Very respecttully your obdieut serv't, R. The provost guard being established, the works around the city, which are of immense extent and strength were then garrisoned. The Navy Yard has been seized in behalf of the navy, but most of its contents had been destroyed, except some lumber and & quantity of soft coal. The Octorora aud three river monitors are now at anchor in front of the city, having passed up the Blakely and thence down the Tensas. The former and one of tue iron-clads wiil be sent up to the Tombigbee river, where the rebel iron-clad Nashville and gunboat Morgan have fied, but the Muntsyille and Tuscaloosa, two powerfal rams, were gunk in Spanish river before the evacuation. Our naval forces are now busily engaged blowing up and removing the obstructions in the main ship channel, which have proved to be very formidable and full of torpedoes, although we are removing them rapidly. I regret, in this connection, to inform the De- partment that the tug lda has been destroyed by a torpedo, whilst engaged in this work, as well asa iaunch of the Clocinnati, and that the tug Allhea was destroyed in dragging for torpedces in Blakaly river. Also, that the gunboat Sciota was sunk yesterday whilst under way, running across the bar, in twelve fret water. There isa prospect of raising this vessel and repairing her damages. The reports of the commanding officer#®f the vessels thus lost, together with lists of killed and wounded, will be forwarded as soon as received. Very respectfully, you? obedient servant, H.K.
