He is now a prisoner ot war, not having carried out bis mission. The report also states that] efi. Davis and family had joined Gene- ral Jobnston at Hillsboro’, which is about thirty miies west of Raleigh. Sherman's forces entered Raleigh a tew days since, and Bre moving beyond thatplaceatter Johnston, who continues to fall back without fighting. + e880 The Latest Developments. We think we do uot err in considering the letter which we publish to-day, of J. Wilkes Booth, the murderer of President Lincoln, worthy of more than a passing notice. It ap- pears in several newspapers in different cities, and is reported by each journal te hast uce;} furnished by the same pcsoOn. The date, ex- cent “foot, 18 Missing in all the copies. The accounts of the various journals in which it was printed on yesterday, conflict materially, and Cifferent details are given. We haya no right to prejudge @ matter of so grave imper- tance as this, but we cannot refrain from making afew criticisms which will naturally occurto every intelligent person. In the first place, the whole tone and tenor of this letter go to establish the theory that the | Murder of Mr. Lincoln was the actof a mere fanatic, whoacted on his own responsibility, nd bad no conference with others, and no share in any “conspiracy.” The same theory bas been most vehemently advocated by such journals as the Chicago Times and the Now York Daily News. The idea that there was some colinsion has been not only intimated by Government officers, but confirmed by the facts alrendy developed, and fiashed all over ‘he North by the telegraph. There haa been time since Saturday morning and Wednesday morn- ing, when this letter was first printed, for the pirdiore, if there were any, to take the alarm and concoct measures to ward off the vengeance that wiilsurely visit them. Noth- ing couid do this more effectnally thana state- ment, under the signature of the assassin, that he, and he alone, had conceived the crime. It does not appear that any responsible person has seen the docnment, or that it nas been placed in the bands of the Government although it is possible that this may have been done In the second place, this letter does not ike Booth. He is ne writer, anda very poor Should he attempt toexpress himself in writing, he would most probably fall into & stilted and theatrical style of diction, such as Might be expected of a person versed in stage literature, and knowing notbihg beyond Bis profeseion as An acto: Far trom this, the ietter, while its drift is spparent, is long, and. verbose, and contains mothing but the sisog which bas preyatied in the South for the tast ten years, and which is fairly embodiad in that sound detestable doggerel called ‘The Bonnie Blae Fiag"’—a stamp speech in bad rhyme. In the third place, there 1s @ labored ta. tion of that blasphemous style of appealing to the Almighty, which has always characterized the proclamations, orders aud public appeals otthe rebels. Thereisa & perfectly ridicu- lous pret Of self-sacrifice to tha “canse of the Souk Although the letter says that he | “loved whe Union,” it argues the cause of | slavery instead of that of freedom, and repeats | the absurd declaration that there is more cruelty between father and sonin the North than Ww shown toward the slaves of | the Sou The constitutional right of the | Southern States to cecede is also discussed. | The etatement that Booth made 920,(K)) a year | in his - profession” every well-informed man kpows to be talse. His engagements were almost universally failures, and latterly no m to the public. He failed in his profession. May it not be possible that the reward of 4 million ¥ ! Asainate ident, which was advertised so exten- y through the Southern newspapers, had some effect upcn the cupidity of the assassin? ‘We do not care to go into details which will be suggested to any one who reads this letter. it seems to us.to Dave been written either for the purpose of getting up @ morbid sympathy for the assassin of the President, or to create the Impression that the horrid deed wassimpiy of his own imagining, like the murderof Buck- ingham by Felton, as narrated by Dumas, and in no wise chargeable to the advise, connse!, or action of the leaders of the rebellion, either Nerth or South.—Chronicte. &@ Special Mee! He had been out of employment for som Ume past, but managed to keep a horse—a very fast pacing Animal—at Pope's stables on K street south, which he took out of the stable about sundown on Friday night last. Ashe mounted and rode ont he sung ont to those in ebarge of the stable ‘i! any oneasks for me tel them I’ve gone to New York.’ On the same afternoon be told some of his acquaintances that he was going to St. Mary’s county. Within s month or two back he spent much of his time with Booth, and tt seemed to nia friends that he had suddenly become infatuated with Booth, and no longer than Tuesday last cneof his acquaintances asked him how he had become so thick with Booth, to which he replied, “Oh, Booth is a good fellow.”’ it will be recollected thg@t aman giving his name as Harld (doubtless Hero!d) hired a roan herse at Naylor's stables on the afternoon of the murder, and that afterwards aman named Atzerard (or Attzerot) left a horse at the stable, telling the hostler to have it ready at 10 o'clecx. Hereld is about 22 or 23 years of age, 5 teat Sor 6 imehes in height, aark complexioned) sincoth, tull face, dark brown hair, which ts worn short, and dark blue eyes We reprint from the Sfar of Monday our ac- count of the transactions of Atzerott and Her- old “A CLUZ TO THE AS@AILANTOF MR. SHWARD. About three weeks ago, a man named Alzerard, represented as being a merchant at Bryan- town, Charles county, Md., went to the stabies of Thompson Naylor, cornerot 13% and E streets, for the purpose of selling a stallion and a brown horse, blind in oneeye. Atzer- ard made several attempts to ceil the horses to the Government, but without success, and fipaily disposed of the stallion to Mr. Thoma- son, stuge contractor to Port Tobacco. He continued to visit Mr. Nailor’s stabies, how- ever, and in a short time reported that he had also sold his brown horse, On Friday afternoon a man named Harld, (Herold undoubtedly,) who Bpprarea to be in- timate with Atzerard, came to the stable and hired @ roam pxcing horse, and shortly after- wards Ateerard appeared with a bay horse, which he left, telling the hostler to have it ready for him at ten o'clock that night. Upon calling for the horse at the appointed time the hostler asked what had become of his friend Harld &nd the roan, to which.Atzerard re- phed, * Has he not returned yet He'll be here directly.” Some time atier the hostler heard the pace of the roan coming down frora the direction of the Treasury, and went ont to meet him, but the rider, apparently to avoid the hostler, turned up Fourteenth street and down F. The latter pedi ay, went back to the stable, and fearing Harld (Herold) in- tended to make off with the horse, saddled an- other and followed him to the Navy Yard bridge, where, in answer to the inquiries, the guard stated thata man riding such a horse bad passed over, and was probably about a quarter of @ mile inadvance. John was also told that he might go over, but could not return before morning. He then came back to tha stable, and hearing that a horse had been taken up in the street by the detectives made some inquiries, and after giving his statement to the Provost Marshal was showa a saddle, which he identified beyond doubt as the one used on the brown horse when at Naylor’s stable, and which Atzerard said he had sold.
