—_— a -— TEE ___—_eeeeesese____seseeeee DRY GOODS. | __PROPOSALS, ‘There is considerable activity in certain de- partments of the horse trade, with scarcely anything doing tn ethers Government and whe railroad and men nearly monopolize the business. Purchasers of army horses have Bad po orders to stop buying, in the face of the crumbling rebel armies. They probably doom tocavairy to give the finishing strokes, seouring the coun! for guerriilas and fleeing bands of rebels. vernment Bas advanced the prices of army horses, paying #172 for cav- Airy and $10 for artillery, but throw out many such as they formerly accepted. All horses are higher than they were a month ago, with the exeeption of roadsters and trotters, whic are not selling, though there isa geod supply ¢ffering. A pair of stylish black horses 15% hands high, speedy, are held at $2,5'0, with $2,000 offered: another pair, still higher priced, are valued at 84,000, and trom these prices they Yan down to $900 and $1,000 each for fast ®avellers. The next class, or good coach Rorses, well matched, that willtravel amijle in Sour or five mintnes, about lf hands high, are searce and wanted. They would command from $600 to $500 and even $1,000 per span.. Two yeare ago many such horses were turned ever to Government by parties who wanted to get rid of them. Oakley & Smith furnish most the railroad and stage horses, or rather res, and are quitebusy, turning over large mumbers of railroad horses at $i3) and $140, and stage horses at $140 and Sis each. There je some call for truck horses of large size at $250 and #300 each. Farmers have rbout Sinietied their purchases for the spring, gen- erally taking low-priced horses, frequently those worn down by hard usage on the city railroads, paying #10 and $75 each for them. Some ¢ spans have been sold to farmers at $300 and #400 per pair. The late decline in gold Brings in many Canadian horses, generally ot small size: but tough and good workers. They are held at #225 and $350 perepan. The gene- yal stagnation of businees attendant upon a @uctuating gold market, and the excitement regarding military operations, is felt among Rorse. dealers, and with stables well filled they eomplain that trade is dull in comparison with | Whatitshould be at this season.— New York Tribune. GUANO IN ANTIGUA.—A most singular dis- @overy has been made by two Yahkees, which bide fair to accumulate the wealth of Antigua Dy giving it a new export, yielding a rich rey- enue. It consists of 1mmense deposits of ani- mal guanoin the ‘Batt’s Hole,” in the south district of the Island, a dismal cavern of in- terminable extent. Legends there were enough about the cave haying been the resort of fayi- tives from justice, and perhaps on that ac- sountno one felt disposed to penetrate the region of darkness and the supposed abode of crime. The gentlemen above named, how- ever, 1 few days ago, undertook to unveil the mystery hanging over the place, and the result ie that an Indelintte number of tons of rich ani- wal excrement and decomposed dead bodies of Myraiads of vampire bats, which for ages, if these islands haye existed for ages, have in- dested the place. The guano has been tested, and said to con- ‘ein at least 35 per cent of phosphate of lime, while the admixtare of a quantity of building lime developed a very large proportion of am- monia, constituting itas valuable a fertilizer ae we baye any knowledge of. The tortunate disooyerers have already waited on his Excel- jency the Governor, the cave being situated on land belonging to the Crown, and his Excel- Jency &t once accorded the necessary permis- sion to remove the deposit, the parties agree- ang to pay ® certainsum per ton, by way of Royalty, on the yield. The name given to the newly discovered manure is Ammoniated Phospho Guano.—Fermuda Paper. Ax ExcitEp LecIsLaTuRE.—The correspon- @ent of the Cincinnati Gazette, writing from Oolumbus, Obio, April 7, says: -An interest- mg Scene occurred in both Houses this morn- wg, Upon the receipt of the intelligence that the great and favorite hero of Ohio, Phil. Sher- tdan, had ridden down and routed Lee's re- weating hosts, capturing generals, privates, and guns without number, and that he confi- dently expected te compel Lee to surrender the Feetof his fugitive soldiers. The governor Rimself brought up the despatch, and then quietly enjoyed what followed. It was read im the Senate by Mr. Devin, and in the House by Mr. Waters, business being suspended (rather reluctantly, I imagine) for that purpose. Then followed such cheering and shouting, and Waving of hats, as threatened the very roof of the Capitol. Order was restored, and the two Houses struggled on with ashow of business ter afew moments, and then took a recess in utter disregard of all rules and decorum. ‘They Broke loose,’ as boys say in school days, shout- we. Hg mad as theyrushedont for High street.” 87” A company has been formed on the Pa- €ific coast, to engage in pearl diving opera- téons. From five to ten workmen go to the bot- tom in & submarine boat; and move about at Will, selecting the best locations and the rich- est deposits. They rise to the surface also at will, and bring with them the results of their labors. The vessel, which forms partof the expedition, as a tender to the explorer, re- @eirves the shells upon its deck, where they are opened. The company propose to operate wpon the Paciffe coast, and the adjacent isiands. These pearl-oysters abound in all the Waters from the Gulf of California to the equi » &nd have been fished for more than three hundred years by the natives, with suc- cess. The most eostly pearls in the werld— those of the Countess de Regla,of the Mar- quesa de Cel and of Madame Velasco, remarkable for th great size and value are from ‘he Gulf of Ualifornia. The great pearl presented to General Victoria, while he was et ident of Mexico, was fromthe same lo- ty. . Mr. John H. Addison, a London broker, who bas recently been praised by the Spiritualist journals in England as “one of the strongest mediums who has yet appeared,” has amused Bimself, firat by performing before select cir- eles of friendsall the tricks of the Davenport Brothers, and secondly by writing to the Lon- don Star to say that he is no *‘medium” at all, but didit for fun. The Spiritual Times and the Spiritual Magazine, which took up Mr. Addison as a remarkable being, now drop him ip great disgust. m7 A method of coating wood with a varnish Bard 4s stone has been recently introduced in Germany; the ingredients are forty pacts of ehalk, forty ofrosin, four of linseed oil, to be Melted together in an fron pot. One part of ative oxide of copper, and one of sulphuric acid, are then to be added, after which the e@omposition is ready for use. Itis applied hot to the wood with a brush, in the same way as paint, and as before observed, becomes ex- @eedingly hard on drying. YD” A number of empty bottles hayebeen ‘Wrown into the sea on the west coastof Africa, and haye been picked up on the Irish coast. One has been found after sixteen years, an- ether after fourteen, anda third afterten years. One was thrown into the Uaribbean Sea, and after five days was picked up 210 miles distant. A bottle was thrown in at Behring’s ‘aite, and 200 days afterwards was foundon the Hon- Guras coast, having travelled 3,500 miles. @7 Un the reading of the bill in the House of Representatives, last week, for the sale of the « Yacht Whisper,” a stout looking member from Berkshire quickly rose, much elated, asx. ang the clerk to be so kind as to read that again The clerk complied ina clear voice. “Ah! said the member from Berkshire witha sigh, “I understood you to saya bill for hot “whis- key,” and was abont to move the passage of the bill without debate.” Hass.
