Memrais, April 8, via CAIRO, April 9.—The | Bulletin of this evening says a report prevails and seems to be well authenticated, that Sel- ma, Alabama, was captured and burned a few | days ago by acavalry force of Gen. Thomas's command. — THE END OF THE REBELLION. The thrilling intelligence buzzed about Washington at alate hour last night of the | surrender of Lee and the army of Northern Virginia was fully and officially announced at daylight this morning by the thunder of ar- tillery and the joyous ringing ot bells. With this surrender perishes the last hope of the rebels and their sympathizers, who Dave pinned their faith upon Lee, and despite defeat and disaster to their cause, culminating in the loss of Richmond, have yet talked of the successive surrenders of vital points by the rebels as profoundly “strategetic,” with a View to concentrating the rebel armies at some interior point, where they could bid defiance indefinitely to the Union forces. But even the New York News will hardly be able to hold the surrender of Lee and his army up to its readers as ‘a blessing in disguise” for the Confederacy ora “masterly piece of policy’: pm the part of the Confederate leaders. When Lée, the wisest and bravest of the contederate lenders, 8° 59 ray of hope for the confederate cause, and yor ®tarily lays down his arms to prevent the farther ‘Ans. fHtile effusion of blood, the most dredulous optimist-a™0Dgsi his fpi- lowers must accept his judgment as decisive. ‘We may expect now to hear at any moment Of the surrender of Johnston and his army, and + that of the acattered remnants of the Confeder- ate Military organization throughout the South Will follow, as soon ag the Rews of the ca. pitalstion Of thi, military chief is known. a ~eff Davis be assured of the safety of his neck he too would surrender, but unpleasant doubts om that point, in view of his great | crimes, will doubtless cause the conscience stricken arch-traitor to seek the desperate cbance of & skulking exitfrom the country he bas ruined. ‘His destiny—even if spared to die a natural death—is not to be envied, loaded as he will be with the curses and contumely of nis countrymen, and deepest and most bitter, of his own deluded followers. , } But we turn to more pleasant subjects—to the certainty of speedy PkAcE; of the re- establishment of our glorious Union, in all its integrity; the return of our brave soldiers to their families and their peaceful occupations; Pe the resumption of suspended industrial and commercial pursuits, and the starting out ot ‘the country on a new term of Prosperity, with & new title to respect among the nations of the world. A DAY OF JUBILEE, the streets are filled with crowds As wewrlle. vila with excitement over of people, almost news of the surrender the greatand glotigus . ~menits ha of Lee. A large procession of Navy Yard | Millinery line made to order. men on jubilee to-day are passing up thestreet, accompanied by bands of music anda well- served howitzer, and other similar demonstra- tions Of poLular feeling are showing them- SelY®, in ah quarters. This morning, Assistant Secretasy of the ‘Treasury Field gave holiday to the clerks of that department; and they immediately started in procession to the President’s House, in fron; of which they sung the “Star Spangled Ban- ner" and “Old Hundred” with electric effect, and them passed onto the War Department shouting the stirring words and air “Rally Round the Flag Boys!” The Secretary of War having been called for, after repeated and urgent demands, appeared before the enthusiastic crowd that thronged the hails and stairways of the War Depart- ment building. He was received with veci- ferious cheeering, but asked to be excused on account of his health trom making any re- marks. He, however, begged to introduce Major General Halleck. The Genera! was received with hearty cheer- ing, and although evidently surprised by the strategy of the Honorable Secretary, addressed the throng as follows: “ Always ready as I am to obey the orders of my superior officer, the honorable Secretary of War, I bardly think he will go so far as to re- quire me to become a stump speaker. [Laugh- ter, cheers and cries of ‘The people require at ‘It is a military necessity,’ &c.] Stump speaking, my friends, is something in which Ihave never indulged. I can only say that our congratulations and thanks are due te Gen. Grant and our brave generais ana sol- diers in the field for te great victory an mounced this morning and for the blessing of peace, of which it is the harbinger.” His Honor, Mayor Wallach, was discovered | in the crowd, and being loudly called for, re | pitied in a few appropriate words, saying tna; \ his heart was too full for utterance, and that no | ‘was gratified to observe, from their bright | looks and happy faces, that they felt as they | sdould feel on such an occasion. \ | ~ i ORE GOO" NEWS. wore Unies Victeries. Steele, commanding 13th Armp Corps, had met with decided success, having captured on the 25th instant the rebel Gen. Clanton, who is mortally wounded; taken 260 prisoners, seized two railway trains at Evergreen, ten miles above Pollard, on the Montgomery railroad, and had torn upand destroyed the railway track poth at Evergreen and Pollard. It is farther learned, from same dispatch that on the same day, March 27, the army un- der Generals Canby, Smith and Granger, had @ fight with the rebels and drove them into their works. SALUTE IN HONOR as SURRENDER OF At early dawn this morning a salute of five hundred guns was fired on Massachusetts ay- enue, between 13th and 16th streets, by order of the Secretary of War, in honor of the capit- ulation of Lee’s army to General Grant. The salute was fired by batteries Eand O, of the 2d regulars; I, of the 3d; G and H, of the 4th, and H, Independent Pennsylvania, from Camp | Barry, under the command of Brig. General Hall, and notwithstanding the early hour at which it took place, a large crowd was soon gathered. RETURN OF PRESIDENT LINCOLN —The dis- patch boat River Queen, which leftCity Point at 11 o’clock p.m. Saturday, arrived here at 6 o’clock last evening, bringing up President Lincoln, Mrs. Lincoln, Master Tad Lincoln, Attorney General Speed, Judge Otto, Senator Sumner, Senator Harlan, Mrs. Harlan, Miss Harlan, and the Marquis of Chambrun. Before leaving City Point on Saturday the President and Mrs. Lincoln visited tze hospit- als, where they were received with the great- | est enthusiasm by our wounded officers and this adve men. A few moments before the River Queen left City Point a transport came alongside with a military band on board, which compliment- ed the distinguished party with a serenade, and the River Queen dropped out into the stream amid the shouting of the troops and beat- ing of drums. ‘ The President's brief relaxation from the wearing duties of his position has had a bene- ficial effect, and he returns to Washington in excellent health and spirits.
