PROM CHARLESTON AND SavaNNaB.—The DRY GOO BANKERS: LEGAL NOTICES. | PROPOSALS. THE EVENING STAR. Financial. | From the New York Commercial, Abril 3.) The news of General Grant's splendid stc- eesses has almost suspended business in all the | markets. Men of business have tarned ont to | join im the common rejoicing, and Wall street bas <pent the two principal business hoars ina “rand jubilee. As yet, it is difficult to awnate “the effect of the news upon business. There is & geveral disposition to torm no jadg- ment upon the commercial bearing of the news until more is known of the fate of Lee’s army, and te prospects of his effect nga junction with Johnston, tooffer battle at some other int, or possibly to fall conjointky on General Sherman's army. Thus far, the news has affected gold but lit- tle, and prices of stocks and merchandiee have eoneequently not fallen materially. At the stock board the feeling was rather bearish,” and @ considerable number of *shorte” were put out at large differences from regular quotations. A smart attack was made by the “bears” on Reading and Fort Wayne. Governments were strong, and all \ higher, except ten-forties, which declined ',. The great crisis that was to tes: the strength of thegold premium has come. The de ot the rebels before Petersburg, and the subse- ture of Richmond by General Weit- gej—eyents which it was anticipated world produce the most violent flactuations in gola— Bave been received with the utmost composure m the Gold Koom, and speculation has rarely Been so tame. The price opened at Lit, andon the arrival of the news of the fall of the rebe! Capi‘al, the premium fell to 454, with no special furore te sell. The crath is the market has been largely eversold, in anticipation of the news, leaying Little room for any fall on the accomplishment of the event. The price was also sustained by & general scarcity of cash gold. We scarcely think that the second-thought of the Room will sastain the present premium, and a fur- ther decline may be considered quite probabie. The abdvndance o joney increases, and the Gemana is less act Lenders are offering aneir fnnds onG per cent.on call, and 7 per cent. loane are being paid in to be renewed at @ per cent., which appears likely to becomeim- med ately the rauliugrate. Tne New Yerk Herald says: The Stonewall, which is rather a formidable vessel, having a spur twenty feet in length and being furnished with two stationary tur- rets, ome carrying a three hundred pound gun amd the other two hundred pounders, arrived at Ferrol on the 4th of last February, where she still remained on the 12th of March. During that time she had been receiving repairs, and St was thought that men ard munitions had been secretly placed on board of her. She is commanded by Capt. Page, formerly of the avy, and was expected to go to iddie of March. A small and ‘very swift steamer, called the Louisa Fanny, supposed to be the tender of the Stonewail, Bad visited Ferro! harbor, communicated with her, and then sailed away.
