Advices from City Point report General Grant’s army in motion yesterday morning, ‘All superfluous baggage is left behind, and the ireops set out as if fof warm work and the | prompt closing up of the war. Gen. Sheridan is co-operating with his cavalry, and stirring news is expected. It would not be proper to indicate the lines of Grant’s advance. pabcoatipiibeabeser aie Ss DISTINGUISHED EXCURSION PARTY. The steam revenue cutter Northerner left the Navy Yard yesterday afternoon about three o’clock, having on board Secretary Seward snd daughter; Senior Bon Gabriel Garcia Tas- sara, the Spanish Minister; Joseph Hume Burnley, the English Minister ad interim, ani jJady, and several other invited lady guests, bound down to Fortress Monroe on a pleasure trip. It was the intention of the distinguished party to stop at Point Lookout, but owing to the storm of last night they probably did not co so. The party will be absent from Washington | some tbree or tour days, and during that time | may pay a vieit to Gen. Grant, at City Point. SHERMAN’S VISIT TO CITY POINT. In accordance with what we understand to | be the wish of the authorities in regard to publicity of the movements of leading officers, We made no mention yesterday ef the fact of Sherman’s presence at City Point. He ar- rived at City Point on Monday with/someof the officers of his staff, and on Tuesday parti- cipated in the consultation on board the River «jueen, mentioned by us vesterday. The story of peace propositions from Gen. Lee being under consideration at that consul- tation, we believe to be without any founda- tion. RELEABED. Col. S. King, of the 2d Kentucky rebel caval- ry, who recently deserted and came through the lines, was released on parole in Baltimore yesterday. FOR EXCHANGE. Thirty-one car loads of prisoners passed through Baltimore yesterday from Camp @hase, Ohio, en route to City Point for ex- change. Iratian OrBrA—Max Maretzek’s Italian Opera Company is growing is popularity with every performance. Ernani was given to a Jarge house last night. This, Verdi’s most meritorious work, gives artistes like Zucchi and Bellini a chance to show their abilities- Zucchi commenced with the “Ernani invo- jami,” fairly electrifying the audience. The Carlo of Bellini isa superior one indeed. Never in our whole experience haye we seen these iwo characters performed better. The chorus, *“O somono Carlo,” was rapturously applauded, and was repeated, and after the repetition the artistes were called before the curtaim. Susini’s “Infelice’ was not sung as well as we have heard him sing it before, Macaferri as Ernani did better than he was expected to do. The chorus and orchestra were, for their size, faultless, and the costumes» as heretofore, were of great splendor. We ‘were disappointed in not seeing Mr. Maretzek direct this opera in person, but hope to see him to-night in Sonnambula, Miss Kellogg's great role. Sonnambula is substituted for Linda, in consequence of the indisposition of Madame Morensi. SALE OF THE CENTRAL OHIO RAILROAD The Centra} Ohio railroad was soldon Tues- day under decree of the Circuit Court of the Dnited States. The purchasers were J. W. The tendency appears to bein favor of a lower premium, and speculation is chiefly in prices, while the volume of the currency re- mains stationary, naturally preduces an abun- dance of money. Thiseffect, however, has as yet developed itself only partially. AU out- standing credits represent late } er range in prices, and are ligi the re- quiremen ts for money will continue about the same &s he’ fore. It will be when outstand- ing contracts are almest wholly based upon the reduced prices that we shall experience a | plethora of money. Those. who maintain that the relation of the volume of the currency to. | the volume of exchanges determines the value + of greenbacks, ought now. in consistency with their theory, to prophesy a steady rise in the premium on gold until prices, become re-ad- justed to the volume of the currency. Will ba dare to do so? ‘his change in the value of the currency may | be expected to produce, ere long, a sharp de- | cline in the rate of interest. This is foreseen | by capitalists; and some are hence, jumping to the conclusion that, asa result of cheaper mon- ey, we are to have an active run of specula- | tion. This would appear to be taking too much for granted. Inan ordinary condition of affairs, inflation generally results from low rates of interest; but the present unsettled condition of affairs presents such grave obstacles to speculative ventures, andthe uncertainties about the fu- turé range of prices are so great, that few men would be found bold enough to venture exten- | sively omspeculation, however strong might be the facilities afforded them by the condition of the money market. Everything along the upper Potomac re- mains quiet, the high water preventing gueril- las from crossing to this side. Our posts along the river are, however, frequently alarmed, and scarcely & night passes withoutsuspicious characters being seen prowling in the vicinity of the lines. Several of them have been cap- tured and are now in the Old Capitol, and are believed to be guerillas from the Virginia side, who had been cut off some time since by the sudden rise im the river. Blockade running has been ulmostentirely broken up,so many having been captured in crossing the Poto- mac, that very fewarenow venturous enough te attempt it. Rebel cavalry generally cross up about Mud- dy Branch, and follow along the river on this side down to the vicinity of our forts, where they make & suddem dash, and escape with such plunder as they can get. Most of the visitors from the other side are citizens of Loudon and Fairfax, who come over into Maryland chiefly to steal’ horses and ether property, for their own use. Arraignment of Miss Harris. pacntiertiasetas This afternoon, Miss Mary Harris, who, tt will be remembered, shot A. Judson Burroughs, aclerk in the Treasury Department, in one of the halls of the building on the 30th of January last, was arriagned in the OmminalConrt( Judge Olin) on an indictment charging her with the <e found by the Grind Jury on Tuesday jast. 4& few minutes past three o’clock she arrived at the court honse in a carriage, accompanied by Warden Beale and Mr. George H. Fayman, one of the guards, and Mrs. Field. The party were met by Joseph H. Bradley, Sr., one of her counsel, whose arm she took and ‘proceeded to the Olerk’s Office, accom- panied by Mr. Bradley and Judge Mason, where they remained until the pending trial in the court-house was brought to such a stage that she could be brought into court for arraignment. She was attired in a straw colored silk bon- net trimmed with yellow ribbon and black lace, beneath, while her dark ringlets dis- played themselves; close fitting black cloth cee and dark gray dress, and carried a dark muff. She was veiled so that only the lower part of her face was visible. At about twenty minutes past three the party entered the court room, the prisoner leaning on Mr. Bradley’s arm, and took seats in front of the green table. the accused taking a Gee at the left, wit Mr. Bradley at her right. Quite & sensation was produced in the court room on the appearance of the party, and after silence had Been restored, Mr. Bradley stated that they were ready, and the clerk of the court (Mr. Middleton) arose, at the same time the accused rising with Mr. Bradley, whose arm she teok, and proceeded to read the in- dictment, which charges that she, with malice aforethought, did fire the fatal shot on the 30th day of January, 1865. At the conclusion, Mr. Middleton asked, «“s What say you, are you guilty or not guilty ?”" Miss Harris, (in a low but firm voice.)—Not guilty. Mr. Middleton.—How will you be tried ? Miss Harris.—By my country. Mr. Bradley, (at the same time.)—By our country. The prisoner was then seated, and after a moment Mr. Bradley asked the court if she could retire. Jadge Olin.—Yes; but you had better confer ‘with the District Attorney in relation to fixing the time for trial. Mr. Bradley—1 willreturn in afew moments and confer with him. The party then left the room and Miss Harris ‘was escorted to the carriage and taken back to jail. 5 : The connsel for the accused are Messrs. Jos. H. Bradley, sr., W. Y. Fendall, of this city, and Hon. D. W. Vorhees, of Indiana. Judge Mason, being a former resident of Burlington, Iowa, from whence the accused hails, was written to shortly after the occurrence in rela. tion to the affair, and he, with citizens of Iowa, have taken a deep interest in the case. ee CRIMINAL CouRT, Judge Olin.—Yesterday, Mary Adley, indicted for receiving stolen property, was found not guilty.
