Navy Yarp—Since the Provost Marshal Genera! bas decided that skillful mechanics in the Navy Yards and Arsenais whose services reas essential to the government as in the field can be detailed, the applications for work in the yard have increased in number, and sel- dom « day passes buta number of inquiries are made for work and the promise of being de- sailed, or “dove-tailed,” as the term is at the ard. 2 Since the season opened the bricklayers have resumed work on the new ¢lothing warehouse, under che superintendence of Mr Horrell, the boss mason, and the first floor of joist having been laid under the superintendence of Master Carpenter Downing, the second story is now under way. In our notice of the visit of Secretary Stanton and others on Thursday we omitted to state that on that occasion the marines of the sta- tion, numbering 100 men, now in a fine state of discipline, paraded in full uniform and re- ceived the distinguished visitors, being under command of Captain Hebb. The machinery of the copper rolling mill, in charge of Mr. McNally, has lately been putin thorough order, includiz. the splendid engine built some twelve years since for running the heavy maghinery, and which has only 2 stopped twice during that period for repairs. ‘The working of the machinery is very inter- esting, and numbers daily visit the mill to wit- nees the rolling of copper and lead into sheets and bars, and the making of nails and tacks. ‘The machinery consists of two pairs of smooth and one pair of rough rollers, with four nail machines, capable of cutting nails of any re- quired size, and one tack machine. The latter 48 a self-feeéer, a strip of copper being put into the machine and made up into tacks, each stamped with the letters U.S., as are also the mails. Nearly all the copper nails and tacks @nd copper sheathing for the navy are man- ‘ufactured here, and consequently the mill is kept full of work. Shortly it rll Mil sma to ae up the same quantity ef machinery in the ower end of the building, andit is alsoexpect- ed that the present building will soon be en- larged. The appearance of the mill is highly complimented by the visitors, the machinery, besides being putin thorough repair, having been neatly painted, under the supervision of Master Painter Peake. ——— RECOVERY OF THE $1,000 STOLEN Bonp.— On the Ist instant, Mr. Jas. A. Sheahan losta $1,000 bond and $20 in money, at a ball given by the 9th V.R The case was reported to the Poliee Department, and Superintendent Richards, assigned the case to detectives Ular- ‘voe and McDevitt, as was stated in the Star at thetime. The detectives have been at work ever since, and success crowned their efforts Saturday night, about 8 o'clock. The officers first arrested Patrick Heffernan, at the time of the robbery, but the evidence, though sufficient Tor the detectives to work on, was not suffici- ent te hold Heffernan for court. It directed their search among a gangof roughs in the First Ward, with whom Heffernan associated. Ascertaining thatone named P. H. Sullivan bad gone to Philadelphia, the detectives went to that city a week ago, and atter three days search, found him,and bronght him to this city. Sullivan denied any knowledge of the Tobberv, but said that when Re was about to leave Washington, & man, whose name he re— fused to give, handed him an envelope, with the request that he would keep it till they met agsin. The detectives sent for the envelope, and upon opening it found the bond. Heffer- wan was re-arrested and taken before Justice Miller, who dismicsed the case against Sulli- ‘van, and held him to bail to appear as a wit- ness, and committed Heffernan to jail for turther hearing at 3 o’clock p. m. to-day. a RECOVERY OF STOLEN GoopS AND ARREST or THE THIk¥.— Misses Eddie and Deland, re- siding at 18 Tweifth street, went to the detec- tives office and complained, last Friday, that their room had been entered between 3 and 12 o'clock p.m, Thursday, and that four silk Gresses, one cloak, a shawi, and twe skirts, ‘Valued at $410, were stolen. The case was as- Signed by Superintendent Richards to Detec- tive Barry, who investigated the case at the premises. The detective determined to arrest the cbhambermaid, Mary Easton, colored. The inmates of the house were satisfied that she ‘was innocent. The detective ascertained that she carried the goods to the house of & respect- able family on L, near Tenth street, and left them with a servent, her acquaintance, for aafe keeping. He went to the honse and re- covered all the goods. Justice Miller sent the prisoner to jail for court. —__—»——__ Owwers WAnTED.—It may not be known to the public that all articles of value left in the cars of the Metropolitan Railway Company are lef! at its office on 17th street, where they can be reclaimed by their respective owners. On 8 casual visit to the office a day or two ago, we saw several articles that haye been there for some days, including two or three ladies’ arasols, several ladies’ veils, a lady’s reticule sket and contents, two port monaies, (con- taining, however, very little money,) two or three pairs of gloves, and many odd ones; one pau of old-style silver framed spectacles, and other articles of less value. It will thus be seen that persons missing articles, supposed to wave been left in the cars, would do well to call At the office. a ALTERED FRACTIONAL Cugrency.— Within the past few days fractional currency notes, raised from 5’s to 50’s, have made their appear- ance, And they are calculated to deceive any ene who does not closely scrutinize them. ‘They appear to have had the fives on the face and the fives on the back erased neatly, and the fifties inscribed in smaller figures, while the bronze on the front is put on so heavily that the lettering beneath does not show through, only two letters, “fi,” showing at the side of the bronze. The yellow back of the five-cent note has also been changed to a dirty pink. —_o-—— Founp tn THE CawAt.—Last night at 11 o'clock & man named Harrison B. Carter got into the Canal at the footof 15 street. He got out again well smeared with gas tar and mud. He walked up lith street towards the avenue, and the attention of Roundsman Franklin being called to him, the Roundsman detailed officer Holbrook to take him to his home, on the cor- ner of 12th street and Maryland avenue. His hat, shoes and cane were found in McLean’ dumber yard by Thomas Blunden, the priv: ‘watchman there; and are at the Second Ward Station house. ee Circus AND MENAGERIB.—The mammoth circus and menagerie combination opens to- morrow night in theirimmense pavilion on 6th street, near the Clarendon Hotel, and during the day will parade through the city, the fa- mous elephant Hannibal leading the preces- op, composed of their grand chariot, the bril- t stud of horses and collection of animals. ‘This combination exceeds anything of the kind ever exhibited in this country, and with their spacious accommodations will afford a rich fund of amusement and information in natural bistory. 2 EDIToR OF THE STAR:—The copy of the Me- tropolitan Railroad bil], as published in the National Intelligencer of Saturday last, is es- sentially erroneous. As soon asthe bill passed the House of Delegates, being at Annapolis at the time, I procured a certified copy, which is doubtless the true bill, and contains provisions very unlike some of those contained in the bill published on Saturday last mespecitally..
