They sent the prisoners over the woras towsrd*their line, but on their way taey broke from the guard, and nearly all es- caped back to our line on each side of the work. corps this morning, orders were given for the sixth corps to make an attack on the left of the line, in front of Fort Fisher. The third divi- sion, Gen. Seymour commanding, wasselected | as the column, and shootly after noon, the line | of battle was formed, and the order to advance | given. In a short time our men haa ot the entire line of the rifle pits of the enemy, nearly ajl the occupants being made prisoners. | Our loss in the affair was very trifling. Over | six hundred prisoners were brought in as the result of the engagement. Still another fight took place at Hatcher's Run, in which the 2d corps were aged. The prisoners fell into our hands on this ground, making in all to-day about 2,975, among whom &re nearly 100 commissioned officers, the high- est in rank being colonel. This does not include the rebel wounded in hospital, the number of whom ts considerable. ‘These men seemed, &s they passed along, per- | fectly satisfied with their position, no doubt anticipating a larger supply of rations than they have been receiving for some time past. It was reported that Gen. Gordon was seen urging his men to fight, and at times swearing at them for their cowardice, ending with the exclamation: “By G—! just as 1 thought—the | men won't fight!” After which he left, and Was not again seen. Lieut. Nye, of the 14th Massachusetts bat- tery, was killed while fighting his guus. He was ordered to surrender, but refused, and six bulleis were found to have entered his body. He was a gallant officer, and much esteemed by his men. Jolonel Pentecost, of the 10th Pennsylvania. was also killed while gallantly leading his inen in the action. This regiment is composed mostiy of new men, and are credited with having behaved like veterans. LATER. Forp's THBATER.—The Lialian Opera season about to be inaugurated at this popular theater, promises to be the most brilliant ever known in Washiagton, The well-kuown popularity of the troupe, the experience of the impressarzo, the indomitable Max Maretzek, and the enter- prise and liberality of Manager Ford, will en- sure the most perfect productions of the great composers, Verdi, Auber, Donizetti, &c. The first of the series of aix operas will be given to- night, Verd1’s last grand opera, La Forza Del Destino, (the Force of Destiny) being selected for the debut of the tronpe. The celebrated Carl Bergman, will wield the baton, and the chorus and orchestra will be falland effective. The President and Mrs. Lincoln have secured boxes for several of the operas, and the British and Italian Ministers fer the entire series. The wealth, beauty and fashion of the Capital will, we doubt not, be strongly represented at Ferd’s Theater during the opera season. The line is reported to be re-astebiished, as tormerly. {SECOND BESPATCH.] Crry Pornt, March 25,3 p. m.—The reault of the engagement this morming was more im- portant than at first reported. At the point where the enemy eharged the main lines are only one hundred and fifty yards apart, the ground between being almost level, and free from obstructions, excepting the abbattis in fromt of the works on each side. At this place firing between the pickets Ras been almost comtingons, and scarcely a day passes withont two or three men being wounded on our side, at least. TBis part of the line has been occupied b: the 34 igede ef the Ist division of the 9! corps, General McLaughlin commanding. At daylight this morning four divisions of the enemy were massed in rear of the line un- i} der command of Gen. Terrv, who was ap- | pointed to lead the charge. These troops con- | sisted of Busbrod Johnson's, Walker's, Evans’ and Grimes’ divisions, (Gordon's corps). At 5 @. m. the charge was made, and the time oc- | oupied im crossing the space between the lings, | outupg down the abattis, and getting to the rear of the fort, was the work of only a tew | minutes. i There they formed in line of battle, brigade { front, and while one advanced on the fort, the other swept the right, toward the Appomattox, | expecting to flank and capture the whole line | w the river. The latter party were met by the | i7th Michigan, and driven back, after some bard fighting. The force that attacked the fort were re- Pulsed by the nm several times, but their numbers being s0 superior toours finally over- powered and took pees nearly all who were in it. They at once sent the captared over the works to their lines, and many suc- ceeded im getung away and returning, the guard baving charge of them being vi small. Gen.
