THE Puxntic Scuoets.—Yesterday the dis. tribution of cards of merit in the Montgomery street schools took place at 3% o'clock p.m, under the direetion of the ot Guardians. ‘The schools at this station are four, \d the Building, formerly Methodist Episcopal Chureb, though amply sufficient for the eommodation of the scholars now attending, will not be sufficient for all who will seek admitiance, as the schools, under the excellent Management of the teachers and guardians, grow in popularity. The atterdance of ladies and gentlemen to Witness the distribution was much larger than at the West Georgetown schools last week, the ball being larger. The President of Board of Guardians, G@ W. Beall, Esq., conducted the exercises. Anthony Hyde, Esq., presided at the melodeon, and f. Daniel conducted the muric. The exercises tor each school were Becessarily brie/, the time not allowing & more extensive programme, which proceeded in the toilowing oreer: Prayer by G. W. Deeble, Esq. AD important amount of stock has been thrown on the market by brokers, on account of the failure of their customers to make g00d their margins; and this has, of course, aided the depression. There wasastrong movement in Govern- ments. Large orders continue to come in from tne imterior; which check the downward ten- dency of prices, thought not wholly, the Six Per Cents having declined at the board 4&4. Ten-forties were y lower. The following aets of the Council were re- ceived :—An ordinance for relief of the George- town Gaslight Company. It was ordered to be amended by insertion of aclause authori- ‘wing the clerk of the Uorporation to pay tne Corporation accounts in accordance with the ordinance, and was passed. Nays—Recorder Uox, Aldermen Beall, Berry and Godey. A resolution in relation to the bridge west of the market, on the canal, giving permission to J.P. Agnew to transfer the footway from the West to the east side, was amended by provi- ding that the petitioner shall have a flag foot- way laid across market space, on the north | side of the bridge, and was then concurred in. | A resolution for repair of the Vigilant en- ‘ine-house, and @ resolution for relief of R.A. ‘a@ters, Vanderwerken & Wells and W. Mr. Hyde, from the joint committee of the two boards, reported a bill authorizing tne | Mayor to pay to bona fide citizens of George- town who shall have been drafted and ac- cepted the sum of #150, provided. sala dratted man shali have furnished a substitute. The Mayor and Clerk are authorized to borrow such au Amount a8 May be Necessary, not ex- eeeding $20,000, and to issue stock for the same bearing interest at six per cent., payable quar- ter}y, the principal to be paid after five years and witbin twenty years. The benefits of the bill are extended to those who in the opinion of the Mayor are pecuniarily unable to help themezelyes. Mr, Hyde paid he reported the bili in com- Plisnce with the wishes of a majority of the committee, but he wasopposed to it. He had wet withonly one man among the citizens who favored the measure. The corporation had not got the money and could not get it. There Was at the present time stock to the amount of $1,000 in the bands of the clerk of the cor- poraiion, which noone wonld take, and there ‘Was bo use of passing any bill creating new stock. Mr. Thomas reiterated the sentiments of Mr. Hyce. He had been assured by the Clerk of the Corporation that the money could not be had, and it was child’s play to pass that bill. He sympathized heartily with those who had becn drafted, but he had not met a single citizen who had any faith in the ability of the Corpo- Tation to help them. Mr. Craig said that while he admitted the difficulties betore them, he felt impelied to do something, and this was the only feasible pro- ject Altbough entertaining the highest respect for the opinien of the Clerk of the Corporation, be did not feel altogether bound by it, and sbould vote for ‘he bill. They had found the means on previous occasions, and could do it again. Possessing téur and @ half millions of property, the city, in his belief, could very easily raise $20,000 to prevent their citizens from being dragged to the field. Mr. Hyde said they had no money. and no | beeques. Arrows inlaid with glittering gems; Money is in moderate demand at 7 per cent. on call. Discounts are quiet at the extreme rates of 9a18 per cent. Exchange is quiet, the rates rather favoring the buyere. ; Gold has passed another prominent land- mark. Speculation has been for several days almost exclusively on the “bear” side; and the disposition appears | to favor allowing the price to fallas low as | possible, so as to afford the better chan:es for a grand rally to be made when opportunity favors. In tke present temper ef the market it is impossible to say what figures the pre- mium may touch. The Evening Post says: “To expect, as some of our gold speeulators affect to do, that the government can pay specie for its notes immediately on the cessa- tion of the war, or that the national banks could be compelled to redeem their circula- | tion in gold on demand, while the carrency is so depreciated by being increased to double its normal yolome, and no specie reserve is held in the country, except by a few of the state | banks, is too singular a delusion to be passed by without notice. To this belief, however, much of the recent depression in governments | is ascribed.” IMPORTANT TO THE HUMAN FAMILyY.—With- ont attempting tocombat or endorse the theory set forth committee on fisheries of the Michigan Legis- lature, if it be pot true, itis about as clever an advertising dodgeas has been played upond = bh legislative body. If it isan established fact, then Mackinaw trout will soon become as pre- cious as gold fish. The report says : The fisheries of Michigan are but yet in their infancy, and yet the total annual pro- ceeds amount to over amillion dollars. They afford a highly prized luxury for immediate consumption. and form one of our leading arti- eles of export, and are very justly regarded as constituting one ofour greatestinterests. It is also a matter worthy of serious consideration, thatthe profusion with which finny tribes(espef | cially Mackinaw trout, so-called,) propagate their species, and is a peculiarity said to be im-~ partedto those who partake freely and regularly or them as food: a supposition that would seem strongly supported by facts, as fishersmen are proverbial for the number of their descendants. Many of the inhabitants of the northern fishing districts of our State are the happy fathers. often, of over & score of children. Very nu- merous cases can be cited as_ striking proofin support of this theory. Thousands of the wealthier classes from the most civilized por- ticns of the Union, especially since the break- ing out of fe war, become converts to tais theory (through patriotic motives, audoub' edly.) and go annually to the fich-yieldtng Jakes and rivers of the North. 7 The New York “Fashion: ebange already in the waterfall-pins, face- tonsly called by men “dumb bells.” Tbe pins with huge balls at each end, connected by an elas‘ic string. were considered the height of style. There have been superseded by the most fantastic and really grotesque shapes. Many of ebeny, cornelian, amber, bronze, coral, silver, steel, and gold—carved, inlaid, acd covered with golden frame-work—every imaginary design is imitated, too numerous to enumerate. The most elaborate are bronzed wheels, each spoke covered with fine ara- onyx seals, with pendants of golden bells: white lilly-cupe. with broad green enamelled leaves: gold and silver trumpets—these will give an idea of the caprice and extravagance of Fash- ions.—.\ew Fork Commercial. Tue Ow Fever aMonc THE Newspors.— The oil fever appears to have reached all classes of the community. Within a week or two past several companies have been organ- ized and the price of stock has been fixed at twenty, twenty-five, forty and fifty cents per share. This gives an opportunity toeverybody to subscribe, and the stock has gone off like hot cakes. The newsboys have joined in the excitement, and it is very amusing to hear litde nets of them earnestly discussing the prospects of striking “ile.”— Philadelphia Bul- f{etin. es i[>" A man coming home Iate one night, a little more than ‘half seas over,” feeling thirsty, procured a giass of water, and drank it.
