Sa A THE REPORTED VIOTORIES OVER SHERMAN NO VICTORIES AFTEK ALL. § corer <tr HARDEE RETIRES WITH THE LOSS UF | TWO GUNS. eS eee ee Richmond papers of Thursday, the 23d inst., are in town, containing, however, nothing of special note, beyond that embraced in the bul- Ietin of Secretary Stanton, published else- where. The revel accounts of the fight with Hardee claim that Hardee ws in position, and re- pulsed five attacks, but was then forced to fall back, leaving two pieces of artillery in Sherman's bands, which could not be taken off the field for want of horses. ‘This does not look much like a victory for the Confederates. The disproportionate losses estimated by the enemy are not credited, perticularly as the rebels could have no means of computing onr casualties if forced to retire themselves, and there is no doubt that these reported victories yf the enemy will prove precisely as others , Paste since the opening of Sherman's | campaign. FROM SHERIDAN’S COMMAND. The chartered steamer Wenonah, Captain Dawes, arrived here yesterday afternoon from the White House, to which point she had been © dispatched several daye ago with supplies for i Gen. Sheridan’s troops. The Wenonah reports the troops of General Sheridan’s command rapidly recovering from the fatigues of their recent brilliant but tire- some raid, and thatthe men are in excellent | spirits and ready to enter upon any work cut out for them. Numbers of guerrillas have made their ap- pearance in the vicinity of the White House, and along the banks of the Pamunkey they Dave become quite troublesome by firing upon our transports. These guerrillas will soon be cleared out. A pvomber of Gen. Skeridan’s troops, who Dave received furloughs for meritorious con- duct while on the recent raid, came up on the Wenonah. The Wenonah also brought up trom the White House a number of horses | ‘worn out on the raid, which are being replaced by tresh ones. RETURN OF THE CONGRESSIONAL ExctR- gion PARTY.—The Congressional Excursion party, consisting of Senators Harlan, Colla- mar, Chandler, Wade, Morrill, Grimes, Fos- ter, Rameey, Foote, Cowan, Sherman, Nye» Lane. snd others, and Representatives Rice, Clark, of New York, Allison, Morrill, Pike, and many others, with their families, which left here on the 13th ins‘ant, on a pleasure trip to Fort Fieher, Charleston, and other points South now in the possession of our forces, re- | turned to tbis city this mori:ing on the steamer City ot Hudson, which came into port gaily decorated with flags in honor of the distin- guished party. The excursionists express themeelvee highly pleased with the trip. PExLSONAL.—Major General Butler, accom. panied by Mps. Butler, arrived here yester- day. Resicnev.—D. D. MONTREAL, March 25.—Argument in the Sr Albans raiders’ case closed last night, and the decision is promised on Wednesday. ‘LOCAL NEWS, Tux New RAILRoap BILL8.—The bill to in- corporate the Metropolitan Railroad company, and the bill authorizing “the Baltimore and OUbio Raiiroad Company to build a railroad from & point on the line ef its road within the State of Maryland, between Knoxville and the Monocacy Junction, through Frederick and Montgomery counties tothe boundary of the District ot Columbia, soas to make a direct connection with the city of Washington,” haya both passed the Maryland Legislature, con- sequently we are pretty sure of having the road built under one charter or the other. Mayor Waliach and the Uonncils committee baveretnrned trom Annapolis, haviug labored there to the end of eeeing that the interests of this city were fully protected in the legislation at Annapolis, aud in this they have fuliy suc- ceeded. Section five of the charter of the last-named company provides “that the same facilities and charges for transportation of freights and pas- sengers shall be in every respect as are fur- pished and charged per mile by the said cam- any on the main stem of their road leading to altimore.” By this important amendment no undue preference can be civen by the Baltimore and, Obio Company to Baltimore interests ‘ Another provision requires that the road shall be cemmenced within a year and fin- ished within five; and that the Metropolitan Road shal! be commenced within two years and finished within ten, under penalty of a forfeiture of churter in both cases Tne Bal-: timere and Onio Railroad Company have the right to construct a branch road. from any point sonth of Rockviile to, tide-water at eorgctown; aad if the company. does not build the brancn within two years from the completion of the road the corporation of, Genreviows: is authorized to make the con- nection. ee | mont, and will oo doubt draw. immensely, £2) REL¥asED.—The schooners Campend: and Owens, seized about a weer ago jn St. Inigoes Creek, Ma., by the Potomac flotilia, for having on board goods not in their clearance papers, Dave been released by the anthorities; and ai- lowed to return to St. Mary's Ureek, where they belong. All well grown, yerying in length trom 7 to lZimches. These beautiful fish were caught by the seine haulers in Little river, south of Analostan Island. How they came there is a mystery, bnt the watermen think that the young fish came from the reservoirs through the pipes into the Capi- tol branch, thence into the canal andthe river, and found # congenial feeding ground in the deep still water, where they were taken. A few years ago these fish were s0 scarce that they were purchased at high prices, to be kept in the vases as parlor ornaments. It is some- what curious that they should become sudden- ly so plentiful as to be caught in nets and of ered in our markets to supply the taples of our citizens. > --—- THe GALE ON THE Riverr.—The gale ot Thuisday afternoon is reported to haye done considerable damage to the shipping on the bay and rivers.
