J PROP THE EVENING STAR. LATE FROM THE SOUTH. —_———_ RICHMOND DATES OF THB 20TH INSTANT. —_—-——_ R. M. T. Hunter’s Card—Views ef the Richmend Press— Reported Defeat of Sherman. ee From the Richmond Dispatch, March 20.} intel) ce is said to Bave been received Bere th: the 16th inetant four divisions of Sherman’s army attacked Hardee somewhere not a bundred miles from Fayetteville, and were four times repulsed with great loss and turned from their route. There is no doubt that this account is essentially correct. nce the Richmond Sentinel, March 20.) _The pleasant rumors yesterday trom the South were not without foundation, and there xe reason to hope for the reception of still more cheering inteligence before the end of this week. From the Richmond Exquirer, March 20.) either Kinston nor Goldsboro had been oc- eupied by the enemy up to Friday night The enemy had appeared on the south side of the Fiver, opposite Kinston, but had not entered the town. Gentlemen who left Goldsboro on Sunday night report all as being quiet there on that day, and noexemy known to beadvancing the place. = : Nerth Carelina. From the Sentinel, March 20.} The leigh Confederate of the 16th instant says: ‘The best impression to-day is that Sher- man is trying to find Terry and Schofield and gettethem. Raleigh does not seem to be in his path justnow. Qurcavairy hada brash with a portion of the enemy’s infantry on the Grove inem 4 miles. Raleigh is not yer aapturea drove them 4 miles. leigh is not yet capture: nor about to be.” ie z 4 ie The Tess of thé same daie has the fol- lowing: “Onr readers must be as patient as tneycan It may be that the career of Sher- man will be puta stop to. We violate no se- cresy by saying he will be confronted by a for- Midable force, commanded by able and ex- perienced officers. “We have accounts of a handsome little brush which Generals Hampton and Hardee had with the enemy’s cavalry in the town of last week. He and General Hardee are said to have charged two hundred of hilpat- Yick’a men witn only their body guard. and to have killed and captured several. The rest were driven out oftown. Gen. Hampton slew two of the imvaders with his own hands.” {From the Sentinel, March 20.] ‘The quiet on our lines below Richmond re- Mains unbroken. There are seven monitors, thirty gunboats, and a large fleet of transports in the James. The Message. Lees the Richmond Sentinel, March 20.] ‘he late specie] message sent to Congress by the President was strangely misconstrued, not only by those members who, unhappily, are ever disposed to cavil, and detight to pre- texte for censure and complaint, buteven by some whom a different course justly entitles to the public confidence and favor. No message Was ever better received by the press, and no one outside of Congress perceived how it in- fringed upon any legitimate sensibilities of the members of that body. It was, indeed, a irank statement of the condition of the country, and the measures of legislation which, In the judg- Ment of the President, were imperatively needed; but so far from this exposition being censurable, it would have been very inexcus- able to allow Congress to disperse without making it. The tone and temper of the message were in accordance with the rules of courtesy and decorum; and it was se recognized, not enly by the people and the press, but by very many members ro less sensitive to what is justly dueto them than others who thonght the occasion called for formal replies. __ A Card from R. M. T. Hunter. {From the Richmond Sentinel, March 20.} A report seems to have obtained currency to the effect that I am in favor of a reconstrac- tion of the old Union; and as this rnmor is not only injurious te myself, but may be, perhaps, hurtful tothe country, I take this occasion to - that it is entirely erroneous. here is, perhaps, no person in the Confed- eracy to whose feelings and interest such an event would be mere repugnant than to mine. I have always held that we ought to maintain the sragee for seceyenaence so long as there is hope of success. The general-in-chief and the President of the Confederate States, as the highest military authorities, are best able to understand our resources and prospects. ‘Whilst they have hope in the contest, it seems tome that we should doall in our power to strengthen their hands; but, after all, itis ina sense of the justice of their cause that the hearts of our people should be confirmed, ana it is to the Chiet Ruler of the Universe that they shouid jook for aid in the a pln ie in which they are enaged. M. T. HUNTER. «+ JENKINS” AT THE WHITE HOUSE, One of the editors of the Cincinnati Commer- cia] thinks that “Jenkins” ought to describe the drees of the gentlemen, as well as that of the ladies, who attend great balls and parties. He tries his hand as follows on the gen tlemen ‘who were at the President’s reception Mr. J n Sm—h_ (I must adopt the regu- jar Jenkins’ style of initials only,) wore a coat and 4 pair of pantaloens that would do honor to any tailor’s shop. The latter were a little too long, and it was the general impression that the charming wearer would have looked better Bad herolled them up alittle. _Mr. J—n—# had on a hat of exquisite mate- rial. The block was imported for him special- ly. He also, like Mr. 8. ‘h, wore @ coat and pantaloons. The former was of beautiful texture, and had pockets behind. Mr. J—n—son was attired very fashionably ap black broadcloth—coat and pants, together ‘with a yest which had two pockets and con- venient place for a watch. Mr. R—b—son wore a shirt of beautiful ma- terial, handsomely plated inthe bosom, and embroidered all round. It had just been irened, which imparted a yery unique appearance. Mr. B ‘was marked for the exquisite | or of shoes he hadon. They had just been alf-soled abd made delightful music. Mr, F- was splendidly attired, but the article which attracted most attention was his pocket handkerchief, which was hemmed ina remarkable manner. A slight cold in the head caused him to use it frequently. Mr. H was the cynosure of all eyes, on Account of the beantifal and costly buttoas on his pantaloons, which differed trom all in be- ing “flaps.” pte S-——— wore a magnificent under shirt bf steel grey, WD Bis name on the corner in indelible ink. ir. T. displayed a peantifal pair of Whiskers, which must have cost an immense sum They were universally admired. Mr. S$. ‘wore @ ring on his little finger, and the cuffs of his shirt were charmingly held in the embrace of mother-of-pearl. Mr W added, to a new costly apparel, &@ pair of stockings that attracted much atten- ten. They were upheld by India rubber gar- ters of the finest finish. Mr. R——— (the enterprising tallow chand- Jer) was much admired forthe suavity of his manner and the buttons of his vest. Mr. C- (in the yooen business,) was beautifully perfumed with a new article of bear’s grease. He smelled very sweet. Mr. (an the dry goods line) wore a vat which was tied with much taste, and anding collar which fitted his finély formed meck with great tightness, Mr. I. » (the celebrated spruce beer deal- e7,) was the observed of all observers, on ac- ‘count of his beots, which were the finest calf- — and were said to be genuine rights and ts. Mr. K. » (in the orange and peanut way,) ‘wore & costly pair of mittens, knit expressly for the occasion. r. » took the palm for mustaches. ‘They were ina high state of waxation. Mr. L——_ made a very graceful appear- ance in — ‘What was chiefly remarka- bie about him was the beautiful color of his shirt, which was of the finest brown muslin. Mr. N. ’s finely moulded form was set off to great advantage by a pair of suspenders of the finest texture, a beantifally starched “dickey.” Mr. ‘was splendidly attired. In ad- dition toa coat and vest, he wore a pair of pantaloons which were buttoned with neat- ness and precision. a7 The «Mexican le” isthe name of a new order created by Maximilian of Mexico. @&7 Joseph Halleck,a brother to General Hal- Jeck, has enlisted asa private at Mineapolis, taking $225 local bounty. @7 During last week 5,031 tons of coal were transported from Cumberland over the Balti- more and Ohio railroad. @7 itis said that one manufacturing estab- liehment in Paterson, N.
