THE EVENING STAR. Fashions for March. {From Le Follet, of Parts. } a Everything in Paris is subject to the capri- ¢¢s of fashion, and even tothe colors selected Yor the attire of the different season: the chivalric sentiments of the present day | Tequired each faithful knight to wear the eolors of his lady, the change would be fre- quent, ifnot irksome. Just now the black and White predominate for all gria and pablic dress. te sach an extent that almost every jady’s colors are those usually worn by every gentleman; and there might be some difficulty in recognizing these, but that the old eustom of wearing “her color” has been relinquished The order of the day is simplicity united with od taste—a union productive of the best re- sults, even in these daysof dressy ostentation, when, in spite of the gandiness inherent in many of the artieles worn, a ceriain degree of elegance is obtained im their disposition and arrangement. For im¢oor wear the Zonave vest, in cash- mere or in velvet, with the trimmings special thereto, is still in considerable favor in Paris. Skiris are made on purpose tobe worn with th vests, as well xs with the braided cane- zous, in fonlard or in cashmere. We may here | note that catins are quite a /a mode -galn, even for all costume, the! turqucise biue, pale rose, and pearl gray colors being preferred. The gray especially, either in crape or in satin, has been particularly remarked at the recent bals dela Ceur. The taste tor far trimmings in rolls or narrow bands on pardessus hxs tarned to account the merits of the sable tufts. They are particularly charming on black velvet yestments, no matter of what form. Where the slab-trimming might be found too expen- sive, strips of martin far may be employed with adyantage. In the way of jewelry, the crystal ornaments recently introduced are much less admired for wear as earrings; but they are applied with excellent effectin the hair, or amorg foliage in floral ornaments for the head. Evenino Dress.—Light gray moire antique robe, proviaed with a passementerie ornament fringed with light beads, so placed on the dress asto stimulate a tunic. The bows down the front of the skirt, cf the same material as the dress, are edged with two rows of beads. The corsage is ornamented in asimilar style. Gray velvet bonnet a fanchon; a velvet band pass- img across the middle attaches the lace of the fanchon. BALL Dress.— White silk robe, ornamented Witk rolls ef satin surmounting a flounce com- posed of upright satin rolis between two rows of white satin flating. Over the robe is atuni¢ forming a sort of train, and surrounded with a flounce of plaits and bouillonnes very similar to the ornamentation of the lower part of the dress. The corsage is round, and the bertha is trimmed to match the other portions of this ball toilet. Pearl necklace and head dress of marguerites. Watxrne Dress.—Light brown silk robe, trimmed round the skirt with two wide bands of black velvet edged with small balls and furmonnting a piasited flounce. The corsage abit, or coat corsage, is also immed with velvet balls and passementerie rourd the edges of the back-turned tails. Green cra pe bonnet, without bayolet, but ornament»d behind with a profusion of magenta velvet ribbons. A Suit ron NEGLIGENCE IN THE TRANS- MISSION OF A TELEGRAPHIC MugssaGe.—D. ©. Wharton Smith and E D. Randolph, bankers and brokers in tbis city, have brought asuit against the Independent Telegraph Company for camages under the following circnmstan- ces: On the 15th of March, 1565, the plaintias delivered at the office of the Company in Phil- adelphia the following despatch:— - PHILADELPHIA, March 15, 1$61.—7o Drexel, Winthrop & Co., New York-—If the gold bill is vetoed, buy immediately $11), (#0. SMitu & RANDOLPH. Upon the authority of this message it seems tha’ $10,000 in gold was purchased; but it Was immediately afterwards ascertained that for some reason the telegraph company had transmitted the despatch omiting the word “if” atthe beginning, and making it read—“ The gold bill is yetoed, buy immediately $100,000,’" etc. When the error became known to Smith & Randolph, the Philadelphia brokers, they atonce sent another despatch to New York, ae follows:—“March/12,1°61.—Don’t buy any more; ou had better sell the $100,000 out at once; the jompany has made the mistake; see the man- ager.’ On the receipt of the first message, Drexel, Winthrop & Co. bought the 100,000 for $162,225, in accordance with the reading of the telegram. The plaintiffs in action now week to recover damages in the sum of $3000 and mterest from March 16, 1$64, which they allege they have sustained in consequence of the erroneous transmission of the despatch. The case was tried before a New York court on | last Friday, without a jury, and the decision Was reserved. Dry Goops AvcTions.—Tuesday is gener- ally a busy day in the suction trade, and this ‘Was noexception. The sale of domestics was one of the most discouragingly low held for a jong time. The articles were evidently forced on the market. to be sold at any prices they would bring. The decline was great, in some eases ten or twelve per cent. The attendance was very large, atthe sale of domestics there being & good sprinkling of out of town mer- cbants—especially trom the West. Almost all the lots were cleared out,and in a dew cases there were duplicates. The prices were generally admitted to be extraordinarily low, but some pressure existed, and as the sale had to be made, the auctioneer took nearly any bids, and the buyers obtained many great bar- gains. On the other floor there was a sale of white goods, which passed off very well, and quite satisfactorily to the owners.—J. ¥. Com- merck FUNERALS.—A new and sensible fashion is begipuing to prevail im this city, in regard to funerals. 1t is this: The faneral services are held, the assembly is dismiseed, and all ex- cept the family and other relatives of the de- ceased return to their homes; afterwards, the Dbearse and carriages come, and the body 1s accompanied to the grave by the family only. This gives the immediate relatives an oppor- tunity to ‘take leave” of the deceased, and perform the last office privately; and, in the case of families Who are poor or im only mod- erate circumstances, it saves much needless expense. A respectable funeral, economically Managed, now cests $75 to $100, while if car- Tiages are provided for all friends and ac- quaintagces whe choose to ride, the expense often amoants to $300 or 3400. There is no good reason why 4 family in affliction should be called upon to pay for sympatbizing friends at the rate of $1 each.— Hartford Press. i A letter from the Army of the James gives an account of a shrewd device by which a@rebel deserter made his escape into our lines .2 broad daylight unmolested. «One day last week, whilst the rebs and our men used a syring ef water between the two lines, a rebel came over and went down into the ravine where the spring was located, and met one of our men. e told our man that he wouldlike to come over, but that, if he attempted it, he would be fired upon. Ourman gave his over- coat, and the two walked leisurely out of the Tayine and soon reached the trenches. The rebs waited for the Johnny tocome up from tke spring, but he did not appear, and they wentin search of him. The trick was soon discovered, and the ravine beeame hostile ground.” BF The Phenix Iron Works, Philadelphia, have a heavy contract for the United States to turnish iron and iron clad steamers. They roll eight inch square and twenty four long, weigh- ing about two tons and a half, of the best iron. ‘The like of this has neyer been done in this country. Each piece is perfeetly straight, square and emooth. Heretofore the Govern. ment had its heayy iron ferged. These works are in completeorder for this kind of work: the gearing and fixings are admirable. @7The launch of the celebrated iron-clad frigate Dunderberg, whose keel was laid in October, 1862, will soon take place. The keel of this vessel was laid about the same time a3 the fron-clad Dictator, which has been in ac- tive service some menths. The Dunderberg is 5,000 toms burden, length 37% feet, breadth 68 feet, depth 32 feet; she is casemated, pierced for 8 broadside guns and 4 int woturrets placed ores the casemates, armor plates 1% inches thick. w7General Hawley, in command at Wil- mipgton, has iss an order for the delivering up to the Federal authorities of all rifles and muskets and their appurtenances, s words, pis- tols, and military weapons and equipments that were formerly held by the so-called Uon- federate authorities, Itis known that a large quantity of small arms, ef various descrip- Gone, were left in the ¢ity. 7 The Signal Telegraph Corps, an organi- zation hitherto comprised of enlisted men, de- tailed from various regiments and attached to general headquarters of the army, bas recent- ty been disbanded or remodeled—the enlisted men having been retarned to their respective Sennen, and their places supplied by civil- CELEBRATE EN BERDS. » -——— 'b ed Zhgnesepienst cers cots ortns xtra Barly Peas, Beet, Bee Pp rots, Parsnip.
