EXTRA. SHERIDAN ———j+—— His Comma: i ‘ay te White He Importance of the Expedition— Latest from the Army ef the Potemac—Shelling the Enemy's L —_—»———_ Information from the Army of the Potomac says that General Sheridan, after inflicting so much damage on the enemy, is on his wa to the White House. His raid is considered by high military officers to be the most important of the war. The batteries of Fort Morton shelled the enemy's lines briskly on Monday afternoon, And were replied to, but, as far as known, ‘without damage. Deserters continue to come in nightly; on Sunday several cavalrymen arrived with their Borses and equipments, which they are allowed to sell. LATER FROM NORTH CAROLINA. Sow Reo Genera! Sherman at Fayetteville—Com- munication Established with Wilming- ton—Stirring News Expected—The Reb- els still Retreating im front ef Schofieid — Further Deti Newcrew, March 15.—Yesterday the ene- moy fell back across the Neuse river, after burn- ing the bridge over that stream. Itis also reported that they burnt the rebel ram at the same time which was guarding the bridge. Timber is now going forward to rebuild the | bridge. | The railroad is completed to within a short distance of the river, opposite Kinston. The enemy will not be able to remain in Kigston iong, even if they decide to make another stand, ef which there is much doubt. Deserters continue to come into our lines. The enemy suffered most owing to the re- peated charges on our works, in which they ‘were repulsed each time with severe loss. Our troops stand their ground manfully, and are in high spirits over the prospect of meeting Sher- man soon Sherman has opened communication with Witmirgtor from Fayetteville. He sends word that he is all right, and marching on. We expect to hear some stirring news from Bim in a few days. Lieut. Col. Tait, of Gen. Schofield’s stat, Las just arrived from the front, and reports Gli quiet to-day. FROM THE SOUTH. The adjournment of the Rebel Congress— Richmond papers of Monday say—was post- poned until the lith, (yesterday) in acccord- @ace with a request by Jet! Davis, who sent a message stating that he proposed to send a message to them requiring ‘deliberation and action.” The Richmond Enquirer of Monday has found Outatlast that Sheridan has whipped Early. The Enquirer says lugrubiously : * About the first of the present month, Sheri- sn, with between six end ten thousand men, Started on a raid up the Valley, visited Stann- ton unopposed, and crossed the Blue Ridge at Rockfish Gap, opposed by Early and some fif- teen hundred men. The oppositicn was fruit- jess, however, our forces being almost sur- Tounded by overwhelming numbers. and ever a thousand captured. The enemy thenentered | Charlottesville unopposed.” GOLD MEDAL TO GENERAL GRANT. Last Saturday, the gold medai voted in 1°63 by Congress to General Grant, was presented to him by Hon. E. B. Washburne. The pre- sentation was first intended to have been a strictly quiet and private affair, but the object of Mr. Washburne’s visit to General Grant’s headquarters haying transpired before the sctual delivery of the medal, the latter was induced to gratify x large number of his per- sonal friends by allowing it to assume a more , formal and imposing character. At the conclusion of the presentation speech of Mr. Washburne, Genera! Grant said: “1 accept the medal and joint resolution of Congress which the President has commis- sioned you to deliverto me. I will do myself the honor at an early day to acknowledge the receipt of the letter of the President accompa- rying them, and to communicate in orders to the officers and soldiers who served under my command prior to the passage of the resolution the thanks so generously tendered to them by the Congress of the United States.” ‘The medal itself is massive and elegant, and contains nearly £700 worth of gold. Its entire cost will not be far from $6,100. The casket containing it is a perfect gem of art, and would be considered a more valuable present than the medal itself. The joint resolution engrossed on parchment ‘was encased in a tube of pure silver, about eighteen inches in length and one and three- quarter inches in diameter, neatly inscribed. APPOINTED. Mr. Geo. Hart, until recently connected with the New York Herald, bas been appointed aid to Governor Pierpont, of Virginia, with the rank of Colonel. EXCHANGED. Over ons thousand released Union prisoners @rrived at Annapolis yesterday. GsEmAN OrERA.—The curiosity to see Tann- hawecr drew a large audience to Grover’s last might. The opera requires a company of grea’ strength for its adequate representation, and the German company has the resources to give it with due effectiveness. Asa whole, it was most satisfactorily ren- Gered iast night, and the performers were ‘Warmly and continuously applauded. The chorus was not quite up to its usual excellent mark, as in familiar operas, in precision, but Was grandly powerful as always. The orchestra was admirable, no small praise, in view of the difficult and peculiar Orchestral effects Wagner deals in so largely. Concerning Tannhauser the audience was of @ivided opinion, and while most found mucn to admire in it, the feeling of most was to Feeerve & definite judgment until a repetition @t two should give more familiarity. To-night, Mozart's delicious opera, The Magic Flute, (new here,) will be performed, and from pesky we learn will be brought out in excellent yle. _—_—_____. Thomas, upon taking the chair, remarked that having been suddenly called to Annapolis to attend to business of importance to George- town, the ese ed would not be present, but before leaving he suggested the appointment of & committee to devise means for relief of the drafted citizens, and report atan adjourned meeting at the earliest moment possibie Mr. Stake addressed the meeting, alluding to the gloomy prospécts of those drafted, and ap- pealed to the meeting to act promptly charitably in their behalf. The action of the Meeting would be regarded as advisory by their representatives in council. He would go a8 far in the matter as hisg@uty would allow, and was willing even to strétch his conscience a little by application to Congress. Mr. S. suggested that the citizens request the Corpo- -ration to give its aid to relieve all bona fide citizens, those Who have lived and voted in the town for one year. There were many who were enrolled in the townsnd whose names tended to increase the quota, who only reside there for the sake of economy, and who claim their citizenship in New York, Pennsyl- vania, and elsewhere, and vote in those States. Such were not entitled to the aidof bona fide citizens. Mr. Shekell moved that a committee of three, including the Mayor as chairman, (Mr. Stake Suggested the chairman of the meeting as one of the committee, which was accepted,) should be appointed to devise means to relieve the bona fide residents who have been drafted, and report at an adjourned meeting tobe held at eight o’clock Wednesday night, which was agreed to. Tne committee consists of Mayor Addison, Jenkin Thomas and Francis Wheatley, Esq. On motion the meeting adjourned until to- night at 8 o’clock.
