U.S. Geant, Commanding Ar- | mic: United States—General* In myJast des- patch, dated Waynesbero’, I gave a brief ac- count of the defeat of Early by Custer's di- | vision. The same night this division was | pushed across the Blue Ridge, and entered | Charlottesville at 2p.m.the next day. The mayor of the city and the principal inhabitants came ont and delivered up the keys of the pub- lic buildings. I badto remain at Charlettes- ville two days. This time was consumed in bringing over from Waynesboro owr ammunition and pon, toon trains. The weather was horrible beyond description and the rain incessant. The two divisions were during this time occupied in destroying the two large iron bridges, one over the Rivanna river, the other over Morse’s creek, near Charlottesville, and the railroad for a distance of eight miles, in the direction | of Lynchburg. On the 6th of March I sent the first division, General Devin commanding, to | Scottsville, on the James river, with directions | to send out light parties through the country | and destroy all merchandize, mills, factories, bridges, etc, on the Rivanna river. These parties to join the division at Scottsville. Johuson’s credit, that before he lett Nashville, he telegraphed to Washington that he was not fit to make the trip, and that he ‘would rather remain at home to assist in the re- generation and resto.ation of Tennessee, than te be Vice President of the United States. Hut atter a council beld among his friends here, it Was deemed right that he should be present to participate in the august ceremonies of Mr. Lincolu’s inauguration for a second term. In obedience to their earnest request, he came, and when hereached Washington was 80 en- feebled as to be compelied to take to his bed at once. Gov. Johnson appeared in the Senate yesterday morning, Hon. Preston King, of New York, who Is staying with bim atthe residence of our hospitable fellow citizen, Francis P. Blair, Sr. His health is entirely restored. He was ascheerful as any man could be afer having recovered from so severe an indisposi- tion. We have no doubt he will fuliy justify tbe warmest anticipatiors of his countrymen. During his stay im the Vice President’s room a jJarge number of the Senators called to pay their respects, and we observed with much sfitisfaction that they were pleased to see him well. — Chronicle. The relative difference ofi and I-61, between the increase of gold vain’ aud of the valae of the crops, shows that of the advance in the value of crops in 1563, 23 per cent. over the gold value, was cans-d by | the demand of Government for war purposes; but in 1°64, great as was the increase in the value of the crops being *4+1,651,113, it was 4 per cent. FROM HILTON HEAD. | The Disaster to the Harvest M. —Sher- man’s Triumphant Progr {Special Correspondence of the Star.) Hitton Hxap, S. U., March 5, 1865.—Th® Flag Steamer “Harvest Moon” was blown up and totally destroyed in the Great Peedee river, off Georgetown, S.C., only a few days Admiral Dahlgren wason board at the o’clock in the morning. There was very little loss of life, only one man known to have been killed and not more than two or three are known to be injured inany way. The “Har- vest Moon” was struck just abaft the bows and sunk very shortly after. Georgetown, S. U., hus been occupied by the | marines of the squadron under command of Lieutenants Stoddstd and Williams, Persons who have very recently made their escape from Florence, S. C., make the usual Teport of great suffering and destitution of the masses to sustain life among our prisoners in the hands of rebels. The stockade in which our prifoners were confined at Florence, S. U., was under the superintendence of a Uolonel Iverson, who commanded a Georgia regiment —probably & son of Ex-Senator Iyerson. His treatment towards the prisoners entrusted to him is represented as cruel in the extreme, and among other things, it is reported that when our men were about to embark recently from Charleston to Flerenca they were sub. jected to rigid searchings, and any monies found in their possession taken away by this rebel officer, With the promise that they wouid receive rebel scrip—four dollars for one ot greenbacks in exchange. The promise, how- ever absurd, the conditions of exchange were not redeemed by Iverson. The men are dying atthe rate of fifty or thereabout a day in the rebe! prisons, abeut two thousand having died within the last twoor three months around and about Charleston, S. C., alone. The people are very properly impressed with a@ sense of Sherman's ability io accomplish success, and through dread of his approach at Florence ali our prisoners confined there were to have been moved to Salisbury, N.C, The U.S. steamers Mingoe, Pawnee ard Nipsic are at Georgetown. Twu iron clads are still at Port Koyal. T.0.W. FROM THE FRONT. Heavy Firing at Dutch Gap—Great Fresh- et in James River. The steamer Cossack arrived here this morn ing from Clty Pcint withseem~Yiragy, which £25"peen Withdrawn from the route for repairs Saturday night considerable heavy firing oc curred at Dutch Gap, and yesterday morning several gunboats went up the Jgmes river. The cause of the firiag had uot transpired when the Cossack left Oity Point. The water inthe Jamesriver is now two feet. higher than wes ever known before, and it is believed by some that the Dutch Gap canal can now be made available if the water does not fall too suddenly. Since the occupation of Suffolk by our troops the rebels have sent a force in that direction, aceording ta the statement of deserters, to resist Qn anticipated attackonthe Weldon road from that direction. Several cases of small-pox have recently occurred at Fortress Monroe, but not sufficient to create any alarm. The Cossack brought up from Point Look- out seven‘deserters from the 9th Virginia cay- airy. Theee men crossed the river on Satur- day im email boat, and came into our Lines with their arms and equipments. They en- countered a number of Mosby's guerrillas on the bauk of the Rappahannock, when a sharp fight ensved between them and the guerrillas, ‘The guerriilas were finaily driven off with the loss of two killed, and the men made their escape, one of the party bYinging his family, consisting of & wife and two children, with m. The Ist Maryland rebel cavalry has been disbunded, and a number of the men nave connected themselves with a detachment of Mosby’s gang, who are now operating in the vicinity of Fredericksburg.
