An attractive entertainment. ee Ses By THE NEW SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY— Congratulations at the Department—Yesterday morning, the principal officers of the Treasury Department waited upon Hon. Hugh McUni- Joch to congratulate him upon his elevation te the Secretaryship. Mr. McUulloch, in re- sponse to their greetings, said that it was per- haps known to them all that the position he held as Secretary cf the Treasury was unso- licited and undesired by him. He had been gratified by the unexpected endorsement re- ceived from the people and the press. and was profoundly grateful to the President for the honor he had conferred upon him in making him bis financial minister; but he could hon- estly say (appreciating as he did the respon- sibilities of the position) that he entered upon the discharge of his new duties with unfeigned reluctance. The Secretarysbip of the Treas- ury had initself no charmtor him. He had bad no desire to dispense its patronage, nor was he in the slightest degree elated by its honor. He bad accepted this responsible position because there ones to be a strong @esire of the people that fe should do so, and because it ‘was tendered to him without pledge and with- out eonditions. He had accepted it as an inde- pendent man, desiring only to maintain and strengthen the public credit and to de his duty to the nation; and although conscious of his inability to meet the public expectations, and fulfy aware of the difficulties to be surmounted, he was not without strong hopes of success in the great work that was before him. He had confidence in our national resources, and in the steady, unwavering determination of the loyal people of the country, irrespective of party, to preserve the Union and maintain the public Taith. He had confidence that the people will cheerfully furnish the money that will be required to bring the war to a successful con- clusion, and that they will be able to bear any burdens that have or may be created in the great contest which the Government is waging for its preservation. His hopes of a successful administration of the affairs of the Department ‘were also strengthened by the consideration that he was to have the hearty and efficient fue of the upright and able men around im. His chief aim would be to provide the means to gischarge the claims upon the Treasury at the earliest day practicable, and to institute measures to bring the business of the country gradually back to the specie basis, a departure trom which (although for the time being a ne- cessity) was no less damaging and demoraliz- ing to the people than expensive to the Goy- ernment. But, while these would be the main objects ‘with bim he should not be ungindtul of the importance of having the current business of ~ fetta conducted with fidelity and atch. ey would, he felt assured, enlighten him by their wisdom and knowledge, andstrength- en bim by increased attention to their respec- tve dudes. Noeffort should be wanting on his part to make the relations between them harmonious and ccrdial, and to infuse new life into the business of the Department If their efforts in that direction were successful, the best results would follow to themselves and to the country. Commissioner Lewis replied on behalf of the Bureau officers, congratulating the new Secre- tary upon his accession to that important trust, and pledging the hearty support and co-oper- ation of all in the Department. . —_.s———_ Cask or LANDLORD AND TRNANT.—Before Justice Bates, March 9, 1-65. Michael O’Brien ws. Joseph Williams. The plaintiff in this case testified that he rented the premises in controversy to the defendant for one year from and after the 25th day of February, I*éi, and produced a paper, which he swore was a copy of anetice which he had piacedin the hands of & man with directions to serve the same upon the defendant, and that he saw the man into whose hands he had placed the notice, &c, go into the house in question with the no- tice, and come out without it, six months be- fore the expiration of the year of the tenancy as aforesaid, and that in conversation with the defendant, a few days thereafter, the latier spoke of having received ‘a notice,” without specifying what sort of notice or to whatit related. M. Thompson, Esq., counsel for the defend- ant, argued that this was not sufficient proof of the notice required by law, and that the notice referred to by the defendantin the conversation might have been some other notice—‘‘a bank netice, for instance;” or some notice in refer- ence to some other matter or thing, and that the non-production of the person to whom it was maintained the ®otice had been served, raised a yehement suspicjon thatif the person referred to as having carried the notice into the house, bad been produced, he wonld not prove service of the notice, upon which the plaintiff relied; and that the testimony of the person whom it was maintained served the notice, would, if deduced, be primary, and the best evidence; and that the evidence deduced, being of a secondary character, was to be re- garded with suspicion, and as insuflicient un- der the ciroumstances; but Mr. Drury. counsel for the plaintiff, argued that it was sufficient, and the justice so held, and gave judgment for the plaintiff, and the defendant appealed to the next May term of the Circuit Court. SPSS eS Tue Batt or THE Fire Bricape—Last night the grand complimentary ball to the U. S. steam fire brigade bern Meigs and Kucker) came off in the large hall of the Patent Office with 8 lerge attendance, and proved & fine affair. The hall was decorated as on Mon- day night last, and the music for dancing was furnished from Withers’s fine baad, while the military band trom Mount Pleasant, under the lead of Samuel Curry, made exceilent music tor the promenade—dancing and promenading being alternately mm order. All the fire companies in the District were represented, including the Georgetown com- panies Vigilantand Potomac. Among many of our prominent citizens present were Mayor Wallach, mostof the Fire Commissioners and Chief Engineer Sessford. Mr. Jacob Tripler, (“Uncle Jake,”) the old- est active fireman in America, was also present, and notwithstanding higage, (over 75 years,) be led off the first set with one of Washington's fair daughters, and danced nearly every set during the evening, he being one of the last to leave the hall. The ladies were present in large numbers, other cities being wellrepregented. Thedanc- ing was kept up with spirit until morning, and all seemed to regret that the night was not longer. Mr. Wm. Dickson acted as master of cere- Toni and was assisted by the committee of arrangements, Mr. Job Angus, chairman; and the floor and reception committees o! twelve each paid every attention to the partic- ipants. — es SUBSTITUTES IN DEY AND.—Since the last drawing substitutes are greatly in demand, ‘Sad in all parts of the District agents are en- ergetic in search of persons who will enter the service as substitutes for those drafted. in Georgetown the search is very close, every hole and corner is being searched by agents from all parts of the District. Those in the bands of the brokers are held from #300 to 31000, and it is thought should there be another draft they wil! be held still higher. It is re- ported that parties are at work at the South engaging contrabands for the service, with the approbation of the Government. If a vessel foaded with contrabands should arrive here shortly, (before all the drafted have to report) they would bring very good prices, and at the samé time much lower than those ruling at present. ae eS PoLickemEN DuarTsp.—M. B. Gorman and 7%. H. Whitemore of the Seventh Ward police, were caught in the drafton Wednesday. Both are excellent officers, and should they “go marching on,” the ferce will find none to fill their place more efficiently.
