THE EVENING STAR. W. D. WALLACH, Editer and Preprieter. WASHINGTON CITY: THURSDAY oeeeeMARBCH 9, 1565, @7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE, SEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER, 4 VAL OF PAROLED AND > BEI UNEES ESCAPED PBIS: Within & few days past ten paroled and es- oaped prisoners have arrived at the Washing- ton Navy Yard. These came from the stock- ade prison at Florence, and belonged to vari- ous vessels, having been captured at different umes. The escaped men state that when Sherman | marched towards Florence they were any placed on the cars and started towards Wil- Mirgton, but when that place was threatened | they were taken back to Goldsboro, where they remained a short time, and were then Rent back to Wilmingten. A flag of truce, itis said, was sent to Gen. Terry, asking if they { could be exchanged through him, to which he | Yeplied that it could not bedone for several | days. hile they were in Wilmington quiteanum- ber escaped, and were Did by the citizens, and | these men say that several hundred must have got away in this manner, by the aid of Union itizens. 1; Two of the men who have arrived were among those who escaped in Wilmington. ‘They state that when it was known that our forces were making forthe city there was a great skedaddle. There were numbers, how- ever, who remained behind, and they believe that the large majority of those found im the city when our forces entered were loyal to oar | government. One of these escaped prisoners—George An- Gerson, of the menitor Passaic, who was cap- tured in the Warsaw riyeron the5th of De- cember—escaped while being taken with other prisoners from Wilmington to Richmond, he and 15 others Jumpingot the tra‘n when it was abou: 13 miles from Wilmington. Two of these men were shot by the guards from the top of the cars and killed, but all the others made their escape and were in the city when our forces entered. There were about 5,000 prisoners brought away from the Florence stockade, 1,000 sick being left behind. This place had beenincom- mand of Col Iverson, of the 21h South Caro- sina regiment, and it 1s said that he was a prisoner in Richmond for some cause when these men left. Sgyator Hicks’ REMAIns.—The remains of Senator Hicks were laid out in state in the Maryland Institute during yesterday. The metalic coffin was placed upon a sarcophagus, and wreaths of roses covered the coffin. A flag canopy was erected in the center of the room, over the place where the remains were rest- ing, and fiags, in mourning, decorated the surrounding galleries. During the day larg_ mumbers of persons visited the hall and @ Viewed the remains of the deceased. The committee of the Council and a police force Were in attendance. The remains of the de- ceased will be escorted from the hall this morn- ing, about six o'clock, to the wharf, and placed on board @ steamboat for Vambridge.—Balti- miore Sun. RAILROAD TO PorntT or Rocks.—In the Maryland Legislature yesterday, favorable re- ports were made by the committees on bills authorizing the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company to build a railroad from a point on its line between Knoxville and Point of Rocks to Washington. 7 Proceedings have been instituted in the U.
