The total number enrolled in the 2d Ward ‘Was 2,052, and the cards containing the names ‘were placed in the wheel, which was frequent. ly turned by Mr. John A. SS aaa DisMissaL FROM THE WHITE Hovusz—On Fridsy, the 21th instant, agommunication from Hon. Emerson Etheridge was published in a city cotemporary, charging C. O'Leary, an usher at the Executive Mansion, wiih receiy- ing a bribe ‘o forward certain applications for the release of prisoners te the President. The statement furnished wasin effect that a yonng man from Tennessee came to Washington for the purpose of effecting the release of five risoners of war at military prisons in the orthwest. Hon. Lucius Anderson, of Ken- tucky, gaye the young man a Jetter to the Pres- ident, but on calling atthe White House the gentlemen was refused an interview with the President by O'Leary, who upon finding out the object of the visit, subsequently offered to take charge of the papers and procure the President's order for the release of the prison- ers for fifty dollars. The young man also stated that he saw two other parties pay O'Leary money for similar fayors, and left his papers with the usher. 2 Mr. Etheridge then went up with the young man to the White House and made an arrange- ment as proposed by O'Leary, the latter stipu- lating to bring the President's order for the | release of the prisoners to the National Hotel for fifsy dollars, which promise was fulfilled. The order of the President for the release of the prisoners was written on the paper which was signed by Mr. Anderton, and wasin the following words: «« Let these men take the oath of December 1563, and be discharged. | “February 1585. A. He con- tessed that he had undertaken, for Mr. Ether- idge and his triend, to place Mr. Anderson’s communication before the President. that he had requested and induced Mr. Harrington, of Ind, to present the paper to the President, who baa endorsed it and returned it to him; that he bad taken it to the hotel and delivered it te the pe- titioners, and hac received a present in from them tor his services. O'Leary had served three years a5 a soldier and was appointed to his position of usher at the White House in consideration of his ser- vices. 2 es OPENING OF GonzAGA FatR Halt.—The handsome new hall just erected on the grounds adjoining Gonzaga College, F street, was in- augurated last nightin most agreeatle style by a grand concert which brought out some of the best amateur talentof the city. Among the admirable performers here was Mrs. Ue- cilia Young Kretschmar; and Carrey’s fine instrumental music. A fine Chickering piano, kindly furnished by John F. Ellis, 396 Penn. avenue, was also used to brilliant effect in the course of the evening by some excellent per- formers. The building in which this concert was given is 120 by 5U feet, and was erected for the especial use of the grand fair for the benefit o. St. Aloysius Church and the extensive par- ochial schools connected therewith, which wili be opened on Easter Monday. Preparation on a grand scale, are being made for this fair, which promises to be one of the most attractive ever presented in this city to the patronage of the public.
