THE EVENING STAR. | W. D. WALLACH, Editer and Preprieter, WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY....-..- FEBRUARY 25, 1865, ng” BEADING MATTER ON BVERY PAGE SEE OUTSIDE FOR INTBRESTING TELE- GBAPHIO AND OTHER MATTER. THE CAPTURE OF WILMINGTON. eee INTERESTING DETAILS a m > - IMMENSE AMOUNT OF PROPERTY CAPTURED. phase Se Fortress Monror, Feb. 21—The United States gunboat R. R. Cuyler, Com’r Colwell, arrived here this morning from Fort Fisher, N. ©, with important despatches from Maj. Gen. ‘Terry and Admiral Porter, and brought the first glorious news of the evacuation of the city of Wilmington, N.C., on the night of the 2ist instant, and the entrance and complete posses- sion of the city by our forces, under Maj. Gen. Terry, on the morning of the 22d inst. at nine o'clock a, m. Prior to the arrival of the R. R Cuyler, the steamer Virginia, which arrived here yester- dsy, brought the news of the general forward movement of our troops, commencing imme- ciately upon the fall of Fort Anderson, having been attended with entire success, and that Ma) Gen.Terry was steadily driving the rebels before him in utter confusion. and at the period of the sailing of the Virginia was only four miles from the main entrenchments and forts of che enemy, immediately encircling the out- skirts of the city, and his forces steadily, vic- toriously advancing. By the arrival of the R. R. Cuyler. additional particuiars have been obtained, from whieh it @ppears that our forces were in no way deterred in their onward march, the rebel General evincing bat little, if any, disposit‘on to offer resistance, and had sought the shelter of their Works before an engagement with their forces could be brought on. Theevening of the 21st will forever be an eventtul period in the history of the Wilming- ton expedition, commanded by Major General ‘Terry, and the equally gallant Admiral Porter, found our forces within cannon range, and even bailing distance of the rebel army, appa- rently concextrating in strong ferce in their detensivye earthworks, with the spires and houses of the doomed city of ilmington piainly in sight. The various disposition of our forces had been made, and on the morrow the attack would have commenced which would have ba on whose side victory or defeat would st In the meantime the gunboats of Admiral Porter's fleet were slowly and cautiously feel- ing their way up the Cape Fear river so as to enable them to obtain a share of the honor and | render importamt service in the anxiously looked for and anticipated assault on the rebel j works. When daylight of the 20d dawned, skirmish- ers from the different regiments were sent out im advance and were rapidly sent forward, as no resistence was made, the different brigades | also taking up the line of battle, eager and ex. | pectant for the word of assault to be given. Not a shot of any kind was fired, as the | forces kept stilladvancing, and in afew min- | utes the truth was discovered that the rebels bad evacuated their works and the city, ard there was nothing for our army to accomp‘ish than to march in and take the place. So atu o'clock on the morning of the 22d. Major Gen. | Terry, accompanied by his staff and body | guard, entered the city, and received from the | bands of a deputation of a few of the remaining citizens the formal surrender of the stores, supplies, &c. The extent of our captures by the fall of Wilmington are not knewn, but they must be exceedingly great, as the rebel forces on their retreat were so closely pressed as in all probability to be unable to destrov very little, fearing it might lead to the detection of the evacuation. The R. R. Cuyler is the only steamer that has arrived from Fort Fisher to-day, and was doubtless despatched by Admiral! Porter as soon as complete possession of ‘he city was ob'ained. The flag-of-truce steamer New York, Capt. Cbishoim, arrived bere last evening from Point Lookout, Md, with 776 revel prisoners, and left to-day ‘for Varina, on the James river, where the exchange of prisoners on both sides | is progressing very rapidly. The steamship Baltic.Capt_ Murry, arrived here this morning trom New York. Aheavy north-east storm set in iast evening: SUSPENSION OF PAYMENT TO FAMILIES OF PRISONERS OF WAR.
