‘THE EVENING STAR. ANTIpoTE ror Porson.—Dr. J. Edmonds, & rominent London lows to the London imes: I enclose a simple safe and accessible prescription for the whole | range of acid corrosive poisons, which, if promptiy used, will almost invariably save life. Mix two ounces of powdered chalk or magnesia, or one ounce of washing soda, witha pintof milk, and swallow it at one draught; then tickle the back of the throat with a feather or finger so as to produce vomiting. After- ward drink treely of milk and water, and re- peat the vomiting so as to thoroughly wash out thestomach. Any quantity of chalk or m*g- nesia may be taker with safety, bet sodain large quantities is injurious. I may add, that the narcotics are excepted. Mlk is ar-antidote for aimost all the poisens, and especially if followed by vomiting. lhe een ee Cost or Livinc IN PRILADBLPHIA.—Meats ofall kinds reached a higher figure on Sat- urday than it had previously attained. Choice pieces of beef sold at 25 and 30 cents per pound, and mutton chop brought from 22 to 25 cents, few selling for less than the latter price. Racks of mutton sold for 1S certs, and shoulders at 18 and 20 cents. Shoulders of veal, which before the war were sold at 6 and 7cents per pound, could not be obtained on Saturday for less than I* and 20 cents. Cutlets brought 30 cents, and pork steaks the same. Vegetables of alt kinds are high. Best quality of potatoes sold for $2 per bushel; turnips 1) eents per quarter peck. Cabbages were difficult to be got at any price. Prime quality buttersold at 70 and 75 cents per pound: eggs 55 cents per dozen.— Philadelphia Ledger. A Bap PRactice.—Many persons who use kerosene lamps arein the habit, when going to bed or leaving @ room for 2 chort time, of turning the wick down low in order to save the consumption of oil. The censequence is that the air of the room soon becomes vitiated by the unconsumed oil vapors. by the gas pro- duced by the combustion, snd also by the minate particles of smoke and eoot which are thiown off. Air thus poisoned is deadly in its * effects, and the wonder is that more persons @are not immediately and fataliy injured by breathing it. Irritation and inflamation ofthe throat and lungs, head-ache, dizuiness and neusea are amo! ts effects.—Boston Journal.
