Among the most prominent of those of the various departments of the Government were the Capitol, Post Office building, the Interior Department (Patent Office building, ) the Treas- ury, War Office, State Department, the City Hall, &c. The attractions at the War Office and the Patent Office were admirably arranged, and drew immense crowds, which thronged the Streets adjacent, though continually on the meve from 7 until 9 o'clock. Among other illuminations especially worthy of note were those of the Star, Chronicle, and Globe, (Jackson Hal! illuminated with gas,) newspaper offices, the stores of E. Edmonston, William P. M’Kelden, and William Ballan- tyne, on Seventh street west; the Waverly, (S. G. Every window of the War Department was brilliantly illominated, and the large pillars on the north front of the building were taste- fully adorned with American flags. Small flags, designating the different army corps, were arranged in a semi-circle immediately over the door, and just aboye those was the following significant motto: FORT SUMTER, 'N i FORT SUMTER, 1561. The 9th Veteran Reserve Corps (Circle) Band was present, and executed several stir- Ting national airs The State Department was well lighted up, and & goodly nunber of national flags were suspended with tasteful effect about the build- ing. Over the door of the east front was the following excellent motto: «Peace and good will to all nations: but no ent&ngling aliiances, and no foreign interyen- tion.” The Treasury building was also illumi- nated, there being 110 windows fronting on the avenue, each exhibiting 12 lights making in all 1,320 lights. The Navy Department was illuminated ina brilliant manner, as was also Winder’s build- ing, directly opposite, where the Uarver Hos- pital Band wés discoursing good music fro! the verandah. 3 President Lincoln’s mansion was brilliantly illuminated, and many visitors attended to pay their respeets to him and Mrs. Lincoln—many Temaining outside under the impression that the President would appear and favor tifem at least with one of his short and pithy speeches. General Augur's headquarters, on the corner of Pennsylvania ayenue and Fifteen-and-a- half street, andthe Provest Marshal’s office adjoining, were both illuminated, and pre- sented a dazzling appearance; and Secretary Seward’s house, on Fitteen-aud-a-half street, was likewise illuminated—window curtains of the national colors gracing the windows. The residences of all the members of the Cabinet were lighted up, and all were joyous over the occasion of the display. The cflice et Col. Ludington, Chief Quar- termaster of the Department of Washington, Was illuminated by 2-= lights, which radiating from twenty-four windows, hghted up the vicinity magnificently, and made one of the finest displays in the city.
