In THE SENATE yesterday after Our report @lesed— Most of the afternoon was occupied in the consideration of Indian bills; and after recess, in evening session, the report of the committee of conference on the bill to establish a Bureau of Freedman’s Affairs was taken up. Without Gisposing of the subject, the Senate adjourned. In tHe House— The bill providing a republican form of gov- phe for States in rebellion, was laid on the table. The case of A. P. Field, one of the Louisiana celegation, was taken up, and a@ resolution directing that he be brought before the bar of the — and reprimanded by the Speaker; adopted. Mr. Cox moved to lay on the table the resoln- tion excluding Mr. Field from the floor of the House. Agreed to. The enroliment bill was considered at length, and. without deing finally disposed of, amended so that every person who ts, or stall become lisb’e to be enrolled, to report himself the Wwillfa! neglect of which shail be considered and punished ssa misdemeanor. Corn, 2.500 bushels offered; no sales reported; we quote yellow ati 76, and white, which is very scarce, at £205. Oats, 1,600 bushels received; smalisales at+6cts measure and ‘4 cts. weight. Nothing doing in rye; we quote rominalat$! 95 per bushel. Molasses—No sales Provisions—Contracts have been awarded by the Government considerably below current quotations for Mess Pork; full particulars, how- ever are not yet known. All other descriptions are quiet, and prices nominal in the absence of transactions. Sugar—No transections from private hands. The Government, it is understood; takes about 1,000,000 pounds, thongh the particulars haye pot yet been made known. Salt is at a stand still; no demand, and quo- tations altogether nominal. Seeds—Clover steady at $1550a$16 per bushel, the latter for prime. Timothy $6.75 as). and Flax £= 75as8 40 per bushel. Whisky remains dull: no inguiry or sales, held at $2 32 per gallon. Cortums1A.—Columbia, the capital of Sonth Carolina, is a pleasant city of 12,000 or 15,000 inhabitants. It lies on the east bank of the Jongaree River, just below the confluence ot the Salnda and Broad rivers, one hundred and twenty-four miles north west from Charles- ton. The place is situated on a broad plain, is regularly laid out with wide streets, bordered With ornamental trees, and contains many elegant residences. Among the pubiic build- ings are the State Government buildings, South Carolina College, the State Insane Asylum, &c. Columbia is the head of steamnayigation, and has direct railroad connection wit® Charleston, Wilmington and Richmond. It isthe termi- nus of railway branches from Yorkville, Lanrens, Spartanburg, Anderson, and other points onthe northwestern partof the State, and its capture by the Federal forces trom its central position, gives General Sherman the ceutrol of the entire State. With both Florence and Columbia in the hands of Sher- man, they become important bases for move- ments to the interior of North Oarolina and Virginia, and by cutting offthe main sources of supply to Charleston, compelled the evacu- ation of tnat city. 67 “A letter has just been received at th Navy Department from Sir William Arm- strong, the well known English gunmaker, in which he urges this government to imitate the example cf France and Russia by manufactur- ing hisguns. Avy Veteran who has served two years, has been honorably diseharged, and fs physically qualified, may enlist in the Corps for one, two or three yeare. Those enlisting will receive from the Gov- ernment a bounty of #300 as soon as they are mostered in, and, in addition, the regular in- stalments from the Government, in portion to the period of enlistment, as follows: $100 for one year’s service, one-third paid on enlist- ment; £200 for two years’ service, one-third on enlistment; #300 for three years’ service, one- third on enlistment They will be credited to the quota of the Gistgjgt in which they or their families may be domiciled and will, therefore, be entitled to Jocal bounties. Free transportation will be furnished them to Washington by any Provest Marshal.
