METROPOLITAN HaLy.—Free concert saloon, songs, ballet, Ac. aoe mage at Circuit Court, Chief Justice Cartter—Yes- terday, the case of James Towles against Ed Hall was decided. This is a cross action— Hall sued Towles for $1,200 for groceries, and the plaintiff puts in a bill for the services of bis son, James D. Towles, as clerk in the de- fendant's store from January, 1860, to May, 1561. claiming therefore about $2.30. The plaintiff proved a contract at the rate of $200 for the first year, the argument being that for the subsequent time the defendant would pay what was right. The defense offered to allow @ fair compensation for the services of his son, but denies that they are at all proportionate to the same claimed, and the question involved ‘was as to what a fair compensation would be under the circumstances. After argument by ‘Mesers. Carrington and Mattingly for plaintiff, and Bradley & Bradley and Phillips for de- fendant, the Court gavethe case tothe jury, remarking tha’ there was no law in the case, but they could do the parties justice, wno gave Judgment for the plaintiff damages $5. eS ae A FALSE ALARM.— Yesterday morning, about 2% o’clock, an alarm ot fire was given from box No. 28, corner of 10th and H streets north. ‘The signals were given clearly and distinctly. Roundsman Voss was in the yicinity and ran directly to the box,and reached thereso prompt- dy that the alarm giver in making his escape had not time to close the box. The police of the surrounding beats was soon on the spot, but denied having any knowledge of how the alarm was given, or by whom. The inference is fair that some persons have copies of the box keys who should not haye them. It will be fortunate if the police shall succeed in catching these Key holders, and after confis- cating their keys punish tiem severely. But there is a suspicion among-the subordinates that it was done by authority to test the vigi- jance of the fire and police departments. If so, it was very satisfactory, as the departments Were weil represented ina very few minutes after the alarm. —— Exemption CLUrs.—The Fourth Ward Club met last evening at the City Hall, (Mr. Lloyd in the chair and Mr. Davis secretary.) Adjourned. aoa U.S. Court or Craims, February 21.—Ad- journed till to-morrow at 11 o’clock a. m. eos Mayor's Election on 27th instant. _ GEorGETOWN, D. O., Feb. 20, 1865. 4ir. Editor: My attention has been called to an article in the Republican” of Saturday evening last, over the signature of « Brutus,” on the subject of the approaching election for Mayor of this town, of which I cannot refrain from taking @ passing notice. The questions which he represents as being involved ia the election of Mayor, so far from being properly 80 involved, should be utterly and entirely irrel- evant, when the case is properly considered. Politics should have nothing to do with our municipal affairs. So far from it, should always be studiously avoided, as leading to bitter ani- imosities without the shadow of & prospect ofa single beneficial result, and for the reason shat the citizens of Georgetown, having no vote for President of the United States, members of Congress. or any other, save and except that for their Mayor and Boards of Aldermen and Common Council, (strictly local,) will inevi- tably, by adopting a political basis, create ene- mies in Congress against the political party the successful candidate may represent, which Will, to say the least, much embarrass, if not defeat any application the Corperation may make to Congress for rellef, in any emergency. It the citiz ns of Georgetown had the power to increase or diminish the strength of either party in Congress, the case would be different. “Brutus” tells you that certain McClellan men wiil support Mr. Addison for M::;or, and therefore, no Union man should sapport him McClellan's letter of acceptance set forth de- eidedly Union sentiments, althongh / could not have supported him fy word nor action. because I did not believe he had the firmness to withstand the influences that his Vice Presi- dent, Pendleton, would bring to bear upon him. Yet, the McClellan men t> whom -Bru- tus” refers, may have been at heart as good Union men as he or 1. The question then for the voters of George- town (and I earnestly ask their attention to it) is the single one of fitness and quulifications. iknow nothing of Mr. Hill's qualifications, and therefore 1 have nothing to say for or against him. We have all known Mr. Addison for many years in the capacity of Mayor. For myself, can I am perfectly satisfied witk his per- formances; and I may add that we have a stropg index tothe superiority of Mr. Addi- fon’s qualifications over those ot Mr. Hillin the fact, as stated by “ Brutus,” that his ( Addi- ton’s) political opponents, McClellan men, are so satisfied of it as to have determined to vote for Mr. Addison instead of for Mr. Hill. The idea of casting a sbade of suspicion on Mr. Addi- son's loyalty because McClellan men support him for Mayor is altogether unwarrantable; he must be judged by Ais political creed and ac- tions s0 far as he has had any legitimate field for ee, tad geese District of Columbia. usion, I pray you, citizens of George- town, to cast off your political glasses, (unsuited as they are to this region,) and look through those that nature and nature’s God bestowed upon you. for atrue solution of the question which of the two candidates before you—Mr. Addison or Mr. Hill—is the better qualified for your next Mayor.
