ATTENTION 18 called to the notice of the Third Ward Exemption Club, which mee's to-night, at Temperance Hall, when the sub. scription books will be closed. > ATTENTION 18 called to the advertisement of atrunk Jost at a restaurant near the Depot. FERS ASS TE Excirement on the Avenue, near 4\ street, at the Dollar Jewelry Store, over the new and beautiful cluster sets, coral sets, bracelets, chains, rings, teaspoons, &c., for only one dol- lar, at the Dollar Jewelry Store, No. 438 le avenue, near 4} street. fe SPECIAL NOTICES. gees WHAT THE ILLUSTRIOWS ABERNETHY SAID.—' Well, sir, what’s the matter?” said Aber- nethey, the great English surgeon, te a cadaver. ous looking patient, who had called te consult him. ‘Oh, nothing serious,’ was the reply, ‘‘my stomach and liver are out of order, that’s all.” “Do you call that nothing serious,” said Aber- nethy; ‘'I tet] you, sir, that when these twe organs are out of order, as you call it, there iamot a square inch ef the body that is not more or les# diseased, nor a drop of blood init that is in a healthful con- dition,” Nothing can be more true, and there. fore itis of the very highest importance to keep the stomach and liver in a vigorous-condition. If the one is weak and the other irregular in its ac- tion, tone and contrel them with Hosret7T#r’s CELEBRATED StomAcH BitrERs—the most genial vegetable restorative and alterative that has ever been admiwistored asa cure for Dyspepsia and Liver Disease. It is recommended by distin- guished surgeons and physicians of the United States Army, by officers of the Army and Navy, by our first authors, by eminent clergymen, in fact, by thousands ef the most intelligent of every class, a3 an unequaled protective against epidemic and malarious diseases, and asa perfect innocuous, A comparison of the operations of the police of ew York and this District shows the follow- ing results:—The police foree of New York is reported at 2,014; the Metropolitan Police 166. During the year the New York force made 54,751 arrests: the Metropolitan Police 23,535, a balance of 31,206 in fayorof New York. But when the average arrests per man is ascer- tained the amount of service performed is largely in favor of the Metropolitan Police, they averaging nearly 112 arrests per man, and but at thesame time powerful, invigorant and alterative. fe 18-2w “* A thing of beanty is a joy forever.” And nothing is so beautiful as a picture of health. Headache, Nervous Pains, Sour Stomach, Dis- tress after Eating, Prostrating Weaknesg, Disin- clination for Society, Mental Despondency, &c. are the rule rather than the exception with the human family, and havestamped their effects upon the New Yorka fraction over27. The,Com- missioners in their report say “‘astateof war is a school of violence and crime; the fruits of its instruction exhibit themselves mainly in cities, and most ofall in the metropolis.” Wash- ington can with regret endorse the statement. All the notorious thieves and villains made for Washington in hopes of reaping a golden ervest by their villainous practices, and it 1s this that has so greatly increased the labors of the policemen. If the population was com- posed of the citizens proper, the average of ar- aaa the District would be less than in New ork. The tables ef the New York report show 45,485 offences against persons; 10,263 against property. In the District 17,531 against per- “sons, and 6,011 against property. In New York there were 53 murders; 1,611 grand lar- cenies; 4,566 petty do.; 187 pick-pockets; 136 rob- beries; 9,365 disorderly persons; 6,302 disorder- ly_and drunk; and 16,655 drank. In the District, 25 murders; 1,275 grand lar- cenies; 613 petty larcenies;31 pickpockets; 78 robberies; 5,412 disorderly persons; 3,312 disor- deriy and drank; 32-9 drank. But with these facts before them our citizens have sufficent evidence of the efficiency of the Metropolitan Police. —— FUNERAL OF PATROLMAN RENNEKER.—The funeral of the late George R. Renneker, who died Jast week from injaries received by being Tun over by & car on 7th street, took place yes— terday afternoon, from his late residence on 10th street, and was attended by the various organizations of which he was a member anda large concourse of friends and relatives. Dr. Finkle, of the Evangelical Church, after which the procession formed in the fol- lowing order:—Detachment of 30 policemen, Carver Hospital Band, German BenevolentSo- ciety, Union Benevolent Society of the Evan- gelical Ohurch, Finley Hospital Band, Urient- al Lodge with delegations from other Lodges, Mt. Nebo Encampment, Grand Encampment, Grand Lodge The hearse was drawn by four white borses and the following acted as pall bearers:—Po- liceman Kline and Spencer, P.G.’s Peterson and Vogt of the Lodges ot Odd Fellows, Messrs.
