A. Jones, late Chief Cierk in the Provost Marshal's office ir the 34 district of Maryland. entered upon his duties as Commissioner of the Board of Enrollment ef the District of Columbia, thereby relieving Lieut. John Knox, of the 7th regiment Veteran Reserve Corps. who has been acting Commis- sioner for some months past. Mr. Jones is eminently qualified for the position, and will make an efficient officer. General Fry, in an official letter to Provost Marshai O’Beirn, relative to the above change, says°—Major: In relieving Lieut. Knox from duty as Acting Commissioner of the Board ef Enrollment of the District, | wish you to make known to him that he is not relieved from that gGuty because there is any fault to be found in the manner in which he has performed it. Garnet, colored clergyman of consid- erable celebrity, preached yesterday in the Halt of Representatives. The andience was composed largely ot colored people. His text was from the 23d chapte; 7 of Mathew:—‘'For they bind heavy burden# and greivous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.’ The speaker described the Scribes and Pharisees to whom this language applied, and drew a paraliel between them and many politicians of tne present day. His discourse was directed principally to the ‘wrongs inflicted on the African race, and con- cluded by denouncing slavery and demanding at the bands of the white man equal rights.
