His mental faculties, however, seemed to remain unimpaired until 11 o’cloek lastevening. During his consciousness it was communicated to him that nothing more could be done for bim, and in answer to the inquiries of bis psstor, he expressed himself as being | happy in the consolations of religion, and pre- pared for dissolution. His family are expected to arrive this eve. ning or to-morrow morning. Hon Reverdy Johnson and Representative ‘Webster will aurcunce the death to Congress i this morting, and the Senate will make the meceesary arrangements for the funeral. ‘The remains are being embalmed, and will be deposited in the vault of the Congressional Cemetery until navigation opens and the home | of the deceased on the Eastern Shore can be reached. The cace was argued on the 4th instant, and the court dissolved the injunction. Judge Giles refused to hear the district attorney in reply to plaintiff's counsel, and took the broad ground that the Government, in a time like this, must not be embarrassed by legal diffi- culties thrown in its way by injunctions; that an injunction in one case woula lead to the like interference in all,and thus the wheels of the Government might be stopped. A similar decision was made recently by Judge Field, of the U. S. Edwin D. Morgan, U. 8. Senator from New York, has been nominated to the Senate by President Lincoln, te be Secretary of the Treasury, vice Hon. Wm. P. Fessenden, who Teeumes his seat in the Senate, DEATH OF SENATOR HIOKS. In our first edition we announced the death of Senator Hicks, and we now add some par- tienlars of interest. On’ Saturday afternoon, President Lincoln, having heara of the serious illnees of Senator H., visited him, and spent some time by hig bedside, Mr. H. at the time being unable to speak. Senator Johnson, Representative Web- ster, ex-Gov. Thomas, and, im fact, the entire Maryland delegation, together with many other members of Congress, also visited him on Sat urday eet yesterday. Governor Hicks was & member of the Metho- dist Church, and during his last illness was visited several times by Rey. Dr. B. H. Nadal, of Wesley Chapel, who each time, after con- versing with him on spiritual subjects, closed with prayer. Dr. Nadal’s last visit was last evening, when, after conversing some time, he called the attention of Bir. H. to his condition, asiing bim if he was aware that his earthly career was absut to close, and if soto signify by raising his hand. He was then asked 11 he felt that he was ready, if he felt his Saviour near, to which he replied by raising his arm in a decisive gestare, while his coun- tenance was suffused with a happy smile, and in a mement after bis eyes filled with tears. After a most impressive prayer. during which the dying man seemed to follow him closely, Mr. Nadal took his leave. Shortly after Dr. Nadal left him (about 11 o'clock) Mr. H. grew unconscious, and from thst time he pradually sank until 7 o'clock this morning, when he breathed his last There were present with him during last night and at the timeof his death Mr. J. B. Chapman, W. J Nicholson, Dr. Blisg, Dr. Lip- pincott, Col. Powell, of Miss; and to-day his Temains are in charge of Messrs. Chapman, Nichelson and Harris, of Md.. while Mr. Brown, Sergeant.at- Arms of the Senate. is su- perintending the arrangements for the funeral. Gov. Hicks leaves two sons and one dangh- ter. One of his sons was on his way, anda telegram from him reached Mr. H. }ast evening 8 few bonrs before his senses Jeft hint. yw Hicks, at the time of his death, sixty-eighth year, having been born { of September. 1793, near Cambridge, ter coun'y, Md. Ha was one of a large tamily of chijdren, and his pdrents were not able to give him a collegiate course, bat he attended the county schools and secured @ fair education He alded his father in the mean- time in working the farm and in snpporting the family, and on reaching the age of twentys one started in life without any means. At that age he was appointed county const. ble and served Bs sich until 1921. when he wes elecwd Sherif of the county, and subsequently engaged in mercantile business at Vienna, iit Dorchester county, where he remained several years. In 1856 he was elected a member of the electoral coliége of the State of Maryland. The same year he was elected to the Legisia- ture, and was made one of Governor Veazy’s connell in 1897. In 183 he was appointed register of wills of Dorchester, and in 1546 and in 1850 he wasa member of the constitutionalconvention. After serving for four terme as register of wills, he declined further to serve, anda Mr Mitchell was elected, but on his decease Gov. Hicks ‘was re-appointed tothe cfftce, which he held at the time of hiselection in 153 to the Governor- ship of Maryland. On the aeath of Senator Pearce in 1463 he Was appointed by Gov. Bradford to fill the vacancy, and subsequently was elected by the Legisiature for the unexpired term which ends March ‘th, 1867. By his deezwh the country bas lost a good man and & true patriot. His staunch adherence to the Government during the early partof the war aided very materially in the suppression of the Baltimore riot in 1961, and checked ina great degree the efforts of secessionists to carry the State out of the Union, and from the time of his taking his seat in the Senate he gave a hearty support to the Government for tne suppression of the rebellion. MOSBY. ‘The guerrilla chief Mosby, on the last trip of the steamer Mary Allison, - which brought down the exchanged prisorers, came d?wn as passenger, in company with several ladies. He seemed to be quite friendly with some of our officers, but the majority of them did not notice him. He looks quite thin in flesh.
