Affairs in Georgetown. Tez Mayoratty.—The municipal election takes place in this town on the 4th Monday of this rienth, and Wednesday night the friends ot Henry Addison, Esq., the present incumbent, held « preliminary meeting at Lang’s Hotel. Mr Addison having been invited appeared, and was warmly welcomed He said it had deen © long time since he was called to appear before them, but it afforded him. pleasure to yAngwer the calls of his fellow citizens. It had pleased them to nominate him for re-election to the office in which for so many years he had endeavored to the best of his ability to serve for their interest and welfare. He accepted with pleasure, and if elected would continue to striva to promote the Imterests and welfare of his fellow citizens. He did notcometo make a@ lengthy speech on this occasion, he was un- ‘well 2nd bad been for a week past. Bat there was asubject which had been maeh talked about and he would allude to it:—the draft. When the President last called for scme Run- dred thousand men, the speaker was concerned for the safety of his fellow citizens. He proceeded to speak of the difficulties pre- sented before his mind in seeking fora plan by which to relieve them. Finaily headopted the lan for the relief of subscribers of $i00 each. fre wes certain of itssuccess. Unfortunately itworked too well. Some men who were drafted got large sums, but that was no fault of hie. He wished that every man init coula have mede money. But he was blamed by some because there were not more members of that aszociation drafted. Mr. Addison proceeded to show that the money su'scribed by that association was the basis of the subsequent appropriation by the corporation to relieve the town. If it had not been for the money subscribed there the cor- poration neyer would have made the appro- priation it did; and strange as it may appear, they who subscribed most have since been most abused. Mr. 4. closed his remarks by an expression of thenks to bis friends, and promising that upon a fatare occasion he weuld address them more at length A Voice—Vas Mr. Hill cleared up that mat- ter about the market? Mr. Addison replied that he did not think that Mr. Hill bad done anything to clear up that matter. The facts remain as he (Mr. A.) bad stated ina published communication to the Evening Star. Mr. Addison, after conclud- ing his remarks, which were loudly applauded, introduced Mr. W. H. Craig, and excusing himself, retired from the meeting. Mr. Craig said he did not come prepared to make a speech but only to add his support to the cause of Mr. Addiscn, whom he had known & number of years, and had always admired for his rectitude and firmness. The ques- tion will be laid before the people two weeks hence, “Shall this intelligent, competent, ener- getie and faithful officer, who for twenty years bas occupied the position, be turned out bv another,” he would not say incompetent. It would be for them to say whether they thonght him more competent than the present incum- tent. Mr. ©. referred to persecution of men for opinion sake. He as well as ochers present had suffered it. Though he from the first had been identified with the loyalists, some had gone eo faras to charge him with disloyalty. He thought it would be strange indeed if atier having beer placed in offiee by the Govern ment he should so soon turn against that Goy- ernment. Mr C. pointed to the flag which en- circled the stand, and remarked, “This fiag I Jove! And every morning iu my family 1 pray that it méy flosi in honor over our country.” Mr. C. hoped to see the old Mayor sustained by the citizens withont distinction of pariy. He referred to the dratt association, and exon- erated Mayor Addison from all blame which had been cast upon him. Alluding to the two pas Mr. C. said if he understood aright, hese who were exempted by the Addison plan were fully relieved from the eneuing draft, while those relieved by the other plan bave their names again put in the wheel to take chances for another draft. Mr. C. concluded Dy appealing to the people to sustain their Mayor, whose efficiency bad been tested. Loud calls for Mr. Stake followed the re- marks of Mr. Craig. Mr Stake took the stand and briefly spoke of the crisis rapidly approaching as ef vast im- portance to the town and requiring the use of good judgment by every citizen. Hehad upon One eccasion labored hard against the election of Mr. Addison, but now he would go into the traces and work as hard for him as he had be- fore against him. And in connection with such men as those present he was sure of suc- cess. Mr. S.spoke of Mayor Addison's effi- ciency. Hehad always done his duty, and always will. In all matters of vital impor- tance to the town when brought into collision with Washington, be was found at his post, an d ever kept Washington atbay. As for Mr. Hill, socially he was a clever man and an en- terprising citizen, but we have had no test of his qualifications. But we hava tested Mayor Ad¢ison, and found bim good enough, and as my father (said Mr.S.) used to say—“let good enough alone.” Unionis the word with us, With the materia! here preseat united, there is no such word &s tail. During the acidresses of Messrs. Craig and Stake the appl e was enthusiastic, and when Mr. Stake concinded the meeting adjourned three cheere for “Addison” and three for —re POLICE REPORTS—Seconl Precinct.— James Harding, larceny of a grave yard fence: Maty A.
