Crecuit Court, Chief Justice Cartter.— Yesterday, there were several cases calledand decided In this court, the most of which were appezis from the decisions of magistrates. Clemerts agt. Evereit—appeal from Justica Drury. Everett served a thirty days’ noticeon lemenis to quit possession of a certain tene- ment, under the landlord and tenant law, and judgment was given for lesser, from which the lessee appealed, contending that he was a yearly tenant. The preponderance of proot before the court was otherwise, and the value of the property was proved: hence the jndg- ment was affirmed, and the rate of rent fixed at twenty dollargs the previous rate being twelve dollars perMonth. The lat- ter demunded the payment ofthe rent which Underwood did not comply with and he re- fused to acknowledge Natlor as the landlord claiming adverse possession. Nailor subse- qtently distrained for rent and under the old jaw a jury was summoned who gavejudgment agsipst Nailor. These buildings comprise several large and weil-arranged and furnished hotels, with large courts and fountains in their cen‘re, Also, severa! large public halls and suits of rooms sre arranged for families. which can be Tented, farnished or unfurnished, for 8 month, year cr term of years They are built of stone, and correspond in the style of their architec ture. The second story projects beyond the | first, which is used for stores, And it is sup. ported by large stone pillars orarches, leaving | & Covered pavement between them and the | stores. These blocks of buildings, whichadd greatly to the beauty of the street ranning by the Em- peror’s residence, were built by large com- panies of capitalists in Paris and other Fren cities. The same plan could appropriately bi carried out on Pennsylvania avenue, in Wash- ington, between the National Capitol and the President’s Mansion. Capitalistsof Washing- ton, Balnmore, Boston and other cities could | join together, and in the above manner enrich themselves and beautify the appearance of the principal street in the most distinguished city, and of the moet general interest in the nation. Besides, large and elegant hotels, with large courts and sparkiing tqnatains in their centres, with heavy columns and balcenies in front, and with an entrance to drive tnrough, after the style of European hotels, suits of well- arranged rooms could be prepared for the use of Congressmen, and commodious halls and stores brilt for general use. The public build- ings in Washington merit the admiration of the world, and the Capitol cannot be surpassed by any European structure of its character; but the private property presents an Inierior appearance in contrast, and there is need of some such undertaking as above mentioned to make, at least, the private property on the principal street correspond with the massive buildings constructed by the Government. The building up and improvement of the private property of Washington is something that should interest all Americans, so that the enure city may present a finished and elegant appearance Therefore, a company formed of capitalists from different parts of the country to uid in the general improvement of the na- tion’s capital could not be objectionable Utagicn. Washington, BD. O., Feb. 7, 1865. waa BALTIMORE ANNUAL CONFERENCE.—Next ‘Wednesday two weeks, the first day of March, is fixed for the meeting of this body in Light street Church, Baltimore. Rey. Bishop Ciark, elected by the last General Conference, will preside for the first time over the deliverations of this Conference. In a recent article we gave the membership, churches and parsonages of this Conference, wi'h their estimated valae, benevolent contri- butions, Sunday schools, &c., and now add a few additional particulars of interest. In the Washington District the following named preachers will have served two years: Fouudry._W. M. D. Ryan. Tha opinion seems to prevail, however, that with the dis- cretionary power new vested in the Bishop, the energetic Doctor may be continued at this charge & third year, in order that the new and spacious Methodist church, begun and so hand- somely progressed under his administration, may be completed in the early par. of the year. When Dr. Ryan “puts his hand to the plough, he never looks back.” Rev. John Thrush has been in charge of Me- Kendree chapel two years; at Union Chapel, BN. Brown: at Ryland, I. H. M. About one o'clock she went down. accompanied by anoth er female, had drinks and segars, and taking a roli of greenbacks from her stocking, paid her bill and left. Next morning the sailor awoke and missed his room mate, and also discovered that his money had also slipped cable and sailed. The proprietor of the house went in search of the woman, and found her on i2rh street. and carried her back to the Hotel. Off- cer Fues was sent for, and the woman was de- livered to him. She was searched, but no Money was found. She confessed being with the sailor, but denied the robbing. Justice Gibereon, under all the circumstances, decided to send her to jail for court. mains Sei: Sa Lost Boy.—Last cizht, one of the officers of the Fourth Ward took charge of a boy about 13 years old, who had been loitering about the Baltimore Railroad Depot since Wednesday afternoon, and carried him to the station-house as lost child. The little fellow says his name i- Michael Dunn, son of Mr. Dunn, tailor, New York, Elizabeth street, between Spring and Prince, and that be came to this city with his father, looking for his brother, who had been enlisted. About 2 o'clock Wednesday his father left him at the depot, where he remained, get- ting something to eat with money which he got from persons wBo left their baggage with him while they procured their tickets. Wednesday night is a River News.—Last night ice again formed in the Potomac, and to-day the Washington and Alexandria ferry boats are not runnins. The Atlantic opened the charonel this morning which, Dowever, is filled with floating ice. Several chartered steamers came up yester- day afternoon, and a number will probably go down to day with quartermaster’s stores, but it is impossible to get up any of the forage schooners, and the depot at the 7th street wharf is almest entirely ont of hay and straw. The Eastern Braxch is again frozen over, and consequently no boats are arriving or depart- ing, although several vessels of the flotilla are Teady to leave. ee SERIOUS AFFLICTION OF AN OLD CITIZEN.— Last Tuesday, Richard Butt, Esq., an old and estimable citizen, one of the Metropolitan Po- lice Commissioners, was stricken with pa- ralysis while engaged in official duties at the Navy-Yard, where he occupies a position under the Government. He was at once con- veyed to his residence, and submitted to skill- fol medical treatment. This morning we Jearned thatthe attack was very severe, par- alyzing bis entire rightside. Mr. Butt isanont seventy years of age, and though haying a con- stitution unaffected, apparently, by his active lite, it is feared the attack will prove too se- vere for his recovery. —— Revigious Marrers.—We learn that, on Saturday evening last, twenty-five persons were baptised in the church of which the Rev. Mr Johnson is pastor, near the Navy Yard. Of the number thus united to that communion several were young soldiers stationed in this city and neighborhood. Atthe approachine anniversary of the Mis- sionary Society, in Wesley Onapel, Uhief Jus- tice Cbase has consented again to preside, and the assemblage will be addressed by several distingnisbed Senators and members of the Houee of Representatives ge Tue Syow Law.—The decision of the mag- istrates in the cases growing out of the ice ow the pavements, & tew days ago, does not apply to those arrested for failing to cleanse their pavements after the last tall of snow. Angus Copper, John Schaffer, Emily Duke and M. La Truite were arrested for violating the law, and were taken before Justice Giberson, who dismissed Mr. Copper and fined the others #1.58each. The law will be strictly enforced ten ee Free Ficat.—Yesterday afternoon, a squad ot soldiers had a free fight In l2th street, near ©. Officer Walker, of the Sanitary Police, made & aescent upon the party, ard succeeded in capturing five. Aleutenant, who was in the ring, by executing a flank movement, double-quick, e-caped. The prisoners were delivered ty the military authorities at the Cen- tral Guard-house. — Tux Fire DeragTMeNT.—The Board of Fire Commissioners last evening elected Mr. Daniel Barron engineer to No. 3engine, located op Capitol Hill, and J. F. Smoot fireman. The steam fire engines for No. 1 (in the First Ward) and No. 3 (on Capitol Hi’!) areexpected | to arrive by the first of March. _— True House of Representatives on Sunday morning was very much crowded with citi- zens and strangers attencing divine service.
