THE EVENING STAR. Bembardment ef Fert Pisher. A private letter from an officer who partici- pated in the captere of Fort Fishes thus de- eribes the bombardment ; . «Se continuous and telling was the fire that the garrison was driven into the bomb-proofs, and made no reply with their guns, several of which were already dismounted. At this time, the parapets, traverses and sloping sides of the vast earthwork were farrowed and notched by the unparalieled fire which had been con- centrated upon the fort three days and nights. Yet the work was not weakened or toany considerable extent. Although shot and sbeil fell either upon or withia the fortress, to the number of 360 a minute, or 21.600 an hour, it was not breached nor swept away, but stood with distinct and dim outiines nearly ss rfect.as when the first gun opened upon it. hie, and many other engagements, conclu- sively show thatthe most formidable offensive and defensive works are those made of earth. The bombardment, es it progressed on this da: ean be but meagerly described. I: was grand, terrible, impressive beyond the power of bau- man description. The most concentrated and wertul fire had been reserved for this day. be uncomely monitors ran close in shore, and delivered their huge shells with the greatest accuracy and fine effect. The frigates Color- ado and Wabash, mounting two tiers of heavy ans, took their positions farther owt than the vessels of lighter draught, and pou'ed in their terrible and rapid broadsides. They were con- tantly enveloped in cionds of sulphurous oke, through which lurid tongues of fire Jjeaped from their oaken sides. Our other gun- Doats were formed in line of battle, and vied with each other in the terrible conteet. The peacefulsea was overspread witha vast ex- iended cloud of battle smeke, through which tbe sum could not force his genial beams. Probably a more concentrated and powerfal @aval fire was never witnessed—probably was never equaled. So powerfai was it, that the solid shet and shell huried by our largest gous, penetrated in some iastances throngh Biieen feet of solic earth andexploded against or within the bomp-proofs. ? was told by eionel Lamb's secretary that the concnseion Witain the fort, from expleding the shell and solid shot, was terrible and deafening. it aeemedas it volcanic fires were leaping and thoudering from the earth. Tke air hissed, qguivered flamed missies of destruction. One wenceasing thunder of artillery shook the earth. On this occasion, I saw what I had never before saw ina bombardment. Large wreaths or rings of powder-smoke trequently issued from the muzzies of the heavy guns, and rising slowly and regularly, increased in diameter and preserved their original form gor a long time. ess of the ‘*Dai Ching.** On the nightof the 22d ult. orders were given by the commanding officer of the Dai Ching to be in readiness on the following morning to proceed cp the Combahee river as far as the ferry, a point near the Charleston and Savan- nab Railroad, for the purpose of co-operating 4n an adyance movement of Gen. Howard's forces. Imaccordance with those orders the Dai Ohing got under weigh at an early hour on (he 20th, and, after having proceeded ap the Combahee for a few miles, was fired upon by 2@ Hebel battery situated on the right bank of the river. The battery opened with heavy pieces and at short range, nearly every shot taking offect in some part of the vessel. The position of the Dai Ching when first fired upon ‘was suck as to expose her te a raking fire, but notwithstanding (bis fact she brought to bear on the fort with good effect her 100-pounder bow gun. Before the battery engaged her, the Dai Ching. as good Inck would have it, fell in with and captured the blocksde-rnuner Coquette, bound from Charleston to Nassau, with a cargo of seventy-five bales of cotion. A prize crew was immediately put on board with orders to take the prize to Port Royal, at which place she subsequently arrived. The Dai Ching maintained the fight with the Tebel battery for seven consecutive hours, and nad not the unfortunate cireumstance of her getting aground occurred, the result, in ali probability, would have been the capture of the fort, together with al its guns. As it happens, the Compahee river is difficult of navigation, in consequence of its numerous short turms and shallow places. Her uncomfortable position having been observed by the rebels, they re- doubled their efforts to disable her, and, in order to effect this result several additional guns were brought into action. The officers and crew of the Dai Ching be- haved splendidly, and although they had ex- treme odd<to centend against, they crippled and shattered the enemy's fort to that extent that it would have been in our possession had the pesition of the ship admitted ef one more hour’s working of the guns. Atlaet,at3o’clk in the afternoon, it being apparent that the ves- sel could not be got afioat, and thatit and all hands on ocoard would be captured unless measures were taken to prevent such anevent, it was decided to fire and then abandon her, which was done. Five HUFDRED SHARES.—A Cleveland cop- per speculator fell asleep in church, from which be was waked by the pastor’s reading: “Surely there is@ vein for the silver and a piace tor the gold where they find it.” Jump- ing to his fee: he shook his book at the Minis- ter crying. “Ill take five hundred shares.” @7 There isa coal and oil excitement at Windsor, Conn., seme indications of those arti- cles having been discovered. What is the difference between the An- cients and the Moderns! The Ancients urned | their dead: the Moderns earn their living.
