The Corporation has a committee before Congress, of which the Mayor is chairman, and it appears that he is doing this work of himself: has locked himself to five *“ or six butchers to defeat the objects of the Cor- poration. If the petitioners succeed, the Cor- poration has no use for a market-house.” The facts of the case are simply these: On Wednesday, the 25th day of January, I re- ceived a letter from the Hon. F T. Davis, in- forming me of the butchers’ application, and requested me to call on hia in regard to the Matter, as it had been referred tohim. I went immediately tothe House, when he informed me that if I would callat the District Commit- tee room the next day he would be able to show me the memorial. What elee I did on that same day will appear from the following letter to W. S. Cox, Esq., and his reply thereto: _ Mayor's Office, Georgetown, Jan. 30, 1865.—Dear Sir: Please say if I did not request an inter. view with you on Wednesday last, and made a to you, at that interview, that the butchers had applied to Congress tor power to establish @ murket-house in this town: that their application had been reterred to the Dis- trict Committee of the House, and by them placed in the bands of the Hon. Mr. Davis. As a sub-committee; that we agreed, the next day, to go before the District Committee upon the subject, wien Mr. Davis handed you the memorial of thé butchers, which we both read, And requested a copy of the same co be laid before our Congressional Committee; that I agreed to wait there until the copy could be made; that, on that afternoon, I inclosed you that copy, with a written notice to meet me on this dayatdp.m. Please state on this sheet if the facts are.as I have above stated. : Yours, respectfully, H. ADDISON. To W.S. Cox, Esq., Recorder. To which Mr. Cox replied: “The facts are as stated by you on the other page. Yours, W.S. Cox.” The petition which Hill so impudently ex- hibited to his board, as ahicwing owhae was going on,” and that «I was doing this work myself, and was locked to five or six butchers to defeat the objects of the corporation,’ was the identical petition which I obtained and ave to Bir. Cox, and on that very day I noti- fed our Congressional committee to met, that that husinees might be considered. ; I also wrote to Mr. Davis, the only gentie- man tn Congress with whom I had any con. qysetion upon the subject, with the request that e would inform me if he knew of any ground wor this false and malicious accusation.
