The feeling in the community in regard to the terrible tragedy at the Treasury Depart- ment building seemed to suffer no dimiaution yesterday; and the pros and cons as to the provocation for the deed were discussed with much fervor. On arriving at the jail, Miss Harris was con- ducted to one of the rooms on the second floor, where she is to be held at present. This room was fitted up as comfortable as possible by the Jailor, tor her. She now appears to realize her situation more than eyer, and last night she spent most of the time in walking the floor, at times almost frantic. She now expregpes her sorrow for having revenged herself in so sum- mary manner. She denies that Burroughs ever seduced her, and asserts that she is a virtuous woman. She says, however, that it was not Burroughs’ faalt that she was not seduced, and charges that he Attempted to get her to meet him at houses of assignation in Chieago, but luckily, through iriends, she was each time informed of the eharacter of such houses as he named before going to them. She also denies that she ever heard of his marriage until she saw it published in the pepe. and states that when she recalled all ig protestations of love and avowal of in- tended marriage to her, with his attempt to disgrace her by causing her to enter a disre- spectable house for the purpose of casting her off and recalling his marriage, she was driven almost to distraction, and then she determined to be avenged. The accused is but 19 years of age. She evinces much intelligence, and no little natural refinement of manner. She is extremely at- tractive in personal appearance, having atair skin, with very dark brown hair, which hangs in ringlets over her shoulders, and jet black eyes, which are Row, however, somewnat sunken and bloodshot. She is rather below the medium height. ef graceful figure, and is neatly attired. Her general appearance is such that none can see her without sympathiz- ing with her. It is probable that as she acknowledged the deed, the magistrate will fully commit her for court without going into a further examination. The following is the statement in substance made by the prisoner: Idy name is Mary Harris; am the daughter of William Harris, of Burlington, Iowa; my parents are Jrish, and are quite poor; amenine- teen years old: aboutseven years ago I first became acquainted with Mr. Burroughs: was then in astore in Burlington; Mr. B. re- sided there; he came frequently to see me at my father’s honse, from an early period in our Acquaintance until he left Burlington; was very fond of him, and fora long time frequent- ly sat in his lap in the presence of my parents; be always manitested great interest in me: as I grew older, and his attentions became more of the character of & suitor, my parents opposed them, and continually told me that his family Was too high for me: that he would never marry me, and that I should not keep company with him. I disregarded them, persisted in seeing him, and became more and more attached tohim. When he left Burlington I did rot ask bim to write tome, but he had not been long gone when I received a letter from him, which i answered, and a correspondence was con- tinued, which was sometimes interrupted by my refraining to write to him. But he would persevere in renewing it, urtil I would be per- suaded to write to him. Before leaving Bur- jington he asked me to marry him; I refused, because | felt that I was too young to disobey my parents in such @ matter. He always pro- tested his ardent affection, and his determina- tion to make me his wife. About two years ago he wrote me that he was raising men for the war, and expected to get a commission, and then he was determined to marry me. Not long after, I receiveda letter from Miss Devlin, who keeps a store on Clark street, Chicago, requesting me to come there, saying that she was a friend of Mr. Burroughs and 1 could see him there. About twenty months ago I went tothat city. Meantime Mr. Burroughs, who had raised @ company of troops, injured his ankle, could not go to the field, and resigned his commission. lsaw him frequently, and received notes from him regu- iarly antil within a week of his marriage. ln August or September, a year ago, I re- ceived an anonymous note asking me to meet the wri er at a house which I ascertained was one of ‘*the most notorious in Chicago.” Miss Devlin eaid ehe believed the note was trom Burroughs, ana | determined if possible to as- certain the truth. Miss Devlin endeavored to scertain who put the note in the post office. I answered it, at her suggestion, promising to meet the writer at tne placeappointed. Afrieni of Miss Devlin in the postofiice watched for the party whe came for the reply, and his de- scription confirmed Miss Devlin’s su Sele and inelined one to the belief that Bur- Troughs was the person. I then deteenitied to goto the house appointed, and Miss Devlin ‘went with me. We told her of the appointment, and that my friends would not let me see him elsewhere. The person in eharge of the house stated that the gentleman was not there at the time, but that he had waited there before, and had instructed her not to answer the door-bell, but to permit him to do so, saying that unless the party he wished to see saw him,she would not come in, and we did not remain. Her de- scription further confirmed me in the belief that Mr. Burroughs was the person who made the appointment. Another note was received, stating thatthe writer had unavoidably been absent from the city, and making another ap- pointment I resolyed to go again meantime taking measures to have the house watched. ‘The person (whom I believe to have been Mr. Burroughs) did not go to the house, and when we wentthere again it was closed, and we could not obtain admittance. For some time before this I had not seen Mr. Burroughs. The writer of the anonymous letter said he had seen me often, was mucd prepessessed in my tavor, and wanted to bea friendto me. Mr Burroughs was & man of such marked appearance as not tobe easily mistaken for another. I still felt most intense anxiety to be further satisfied, if possible, whether he whom [ hadso loved, and who had so protested his love for me, could be guilty of such baseness. I then also determined to pros- ecute him for breach of promise. I went to see his brother, Prof. Burroughs, inquired of him whether Jackson was inthecity He walked the floor, asked meif i was from lowa, and upon my replying in the affirmative, said that his brother was not then there, but had been, and had gone to Washington. Shortly after L learned that he bad been married by his brother, the Protessor, I think the day after I was there. I then determined to come to Washing- ton and prosecute him, but continually de- ferred it until last August, when, Miss Devlin baving repeatedly advised me to do so, and of- fered me ali the aid in her power, I came here, only to learn that he had gone to Chicago with his wife. I immediately returnea, and on reaching Chicago employed a lawyer anda detective. I soon ascertained that he had again —* to Washington. but that his wife was be- ieved to be in Chicago, and I supposed that he would return for her. So I waited long time with this expectation, but I subsequentiy learned that he had been there and gone with- out my knowledge. That rene wed my resolve to come on here and secure redress, if possible, Ly prosecution, and at all hazards tosee him. 1 had been disowned by my parents. I could not return to them; and in Burlington, as well as in Chicago, I had been Teported te have had improper relations with him This was never so. And I was benton vindicating my char- acter. If the stories against me had been true, Iconld never have had the heart to come here to seek redress or vindicate my repute. I be- lieved that I should wipe out the stain on my name by the prosecution or in some other way, I hardly knew how. A few days before starting from Chicago (two Weeks ago,) I was walking®along the street and saw some pistols ina shop window. Hav- ing learned that many of the ladies of Chicago carried pistols, especially when traveling, [ determined to buy one, and at once bought the one. I did not know how to load it. The morning of the day that I left Chicago I ex- amined the printed directions upon the wrap- per accompanying the pistol and cartridges, and by following them, succeeded in loading it. I was then called to breakfast, and putting the revolver with my things, forgot to unload it. After I started I concluded to keep it load- ed, but bad then no intention of using it when I got here. After my arrival here I became almost frantic ith a desire to see him, and put ona “nubia” {which I was not wont to wear) anda veil, and so disguised, went to the Treasury. When I went into the Treasur: “Datlding, yesterda: f mornings I inquired for room in which Mr. Burroughs was. and having learned that, walked up and down the hail for some time. Once, I went to the door of the room, opened it a few inches, and saw him at his desk. The moment I lookea at him, sitting there so comfortably, the thought of all I had suffered, and of his being the cause, me, and my band involuntarily pailed back the trigger of the pistol in my pocket. I closed the door, and, stepping away, moved about again, I know not how or where, except that 1 kept my eye on his room until the men began to come out of the rooms. Then I placed my- self where I knew he would have to come near = in meee fon to the staircase. When he ap. “I felt suddenly lifted up; my arm Was malexieacen as stiff as iron, and i saw bim fall. I knew nothing more until 1 was called back as I was aving she building. Pray, sir, what will they do with me. If it was not formy Poor father and mother I would not care.” She repeatedly reiterated her asseveration that there had been nothing improper between her and Mr. Burroughs. Mrs. Burroughs seutriay stated that about twelve menths ago Mr. B. received, through the mail, astrange newspaper, in which was a marriage notice marked, and that Mr. B. re. quested her to cut itout and preserve it, which she did. The notice which she produced and showed to some friends, read somewhat as fol- lows: “Married, by Bishop Dugan, Mr. Chas. Devlin, of Baltimore, to Miss Mary G. Harris, of Burlington, lowa.” Mr. Burroughs, upon reading it, said ‘the was glad to leara of the marriage; hoped she had married well, for she was a good girl, and had seen some hard times.’ a eaegee ns S.
