| mse emer mn TR STE ST SCI SCISSOR" SS SA ASS PS SSS SE SS A SS SSS ST, THE EVENING STAR. CONGRESS{ONAL. After the close of our repert on Saturday, the | Senate briefly discussed the subject of retalia- tion, and adjourned. i The House considered the join. resoiutien Proposing an amendment to the Uenstitntier: and without arriving &* any conciasion,:acd- journed - sete Handling Sheep. As nearly every operation of practice sheep husbandry is necessarily attended with ‘he catchingand handling of sheer, I will make these the first of those practical manipu- ations which Lam now to @escribe. A sheep should always be caught by throwing the hands about the neck; or by seizing one hind Jeg immediately above the hock with band; or by hooking the crook round it.at the same place. When thus caught by the hand the sheep should be drawn gently back until | the disengaged hand can be piaced in frent of ite neck. ‘The crook is very convenient to reach out and draw asheep from a number huddled by a dog or im a corner, without the shepherd's making & spring for it, and thus putting the rest to flight; and @ person ac- eustomed to its use will cateh moderately tame sheep anywhere with this implement. But it must be handled with care. It should be used with a quick but gentle motion, and the caught sheep immediately drawn back rapidly enough to prevent it springing to cne side or the other, and thus wrenching the leg‘ or throwing itself down by exerting its furce at &n angle with the line of dratt im the crook. Care must be taken not to hook the crook toa eheep whenit is so deep in a huddle with others. that they are liable to epring against the ecavght one, or against the handle of the crook either ofjwhich may occasion a severe internal strainon the lez. When the sheepis drawn within reach, the leg led by the crook should at once be seized by the band, and the crook removed Asheep should be lifted either by placing both arms around its body immediately back of the fore legs; or by standing sideways to it and Placing one arm before the fore Iges and the other behind the hind legs; or by throwing one arm reund the fore parts and taking ap the sheep between the arms and hips; or lifung it with the jeft arm under the brisket, the right band grasping the thigh on the other side so that the sheep lays on the Ib ft arm with its back against the catcher’s body. The two first modes arethe handiest and safest with large ebeep, the third mode is yery convenient for small sheep or lambs; and a change between them all operates as a relief to the catcher who bas a large number to handle. Under no circumstances whatever should a sheep be seized, much less lifted by ‘he wool. The ekin is sometimes literally torn from the flesh and where this extent ofinjury is not In- flicted, killing or skinning would invariably disclose more or lese congestion occasioned by laceraling the cellular tissue between the ®kin and flesh and thus prove how muchpnre- ly unnecessary pain and injury has been in- flicted on an unoffending and valuable animal by the ignorance or brutality of its attendant. It cannot be too strongly enforced that gen- tleness in every manipulation and movement connected with sheep is the first and one of the main concep of success in managing them. They should be taught to feer no injury from man. They should be made tame and even affectionate—so they will foliow their keeper about the field—so that, in the stable, they will scartely rise to get out of his way. Wild sheep are constantly suffering some loss or deprivation themselves, and constantly oc- casioning some loss or damage to their owner: and under the modern system of wisiter stable- management, it is dyticult to get through the yearning season with safety to their lambs.— Rondall’s Practic Winter Care of Stocks. Every intelligent and thrifty farmer uuder- stands perfectfy well the importance of prop- erly caring for his stock during the winter Months. While it isa true saying that stock well wintered is half summered, itis equally true that stock coming to the barn in tha fall | tional Gurrency. secured by a pledge of United im good condition and in good heart, can be wintered much more cheaply than that which comes in poor condition. It is almost 1mpos- sible for the most skilful managers to bring an animal from alow toa fairor high condition on hay alone—the usual feed for young cattle, sheep and colts during the winter—but if ina good state of health and flesh on the approach of winter, with a suitable amount and gaatjty ot hay, their condition may and shonid be kept good and their young stock growing until the season for turning them again to grass. This can only be done by careful and regular feed- ing, good pure water and suitable shelter frm the most inclement weather during the winver months of our northern climate. Variety ot food is very essential to the thrift of mest ani- mals, while it is toojoften disregarded by those having care of them. No good breeder will overlook this most important matter. Roots, such a8 turnips, carrots, ete.,"can be roduced in great abundance upon almost any ‘arm in the country, and are a very great help toeke outa short supply of hay, while they are of the greatest advantage to almost any kind of farm stock. At the present high price | ofall kinds of grain there are but very few farmers that will feed it, especially to store | eattle orsheep. Its place may be supplied in a great measure by roots, and that farmer is wise who has laid ina good quantity for winter feeding. A little corn in this way will, offen times, save whole fiock and herds from diseases incidental to insufficient keep or want of change in feed Young animals particularly should be weli fed and cared for through the first winter of their existence. Itis too often the case that ea) yes, colls, and lambs are neglected and left to shift for themselves the first winter, and as barn to the pasture in spring. In this condi- tion it takes almost theentire grass season to recover what fiesh and strength they haye lost during the winter, for want of that care @nd comfort that common humanity would seem to dictate. The most successful breeders and stock raisers give the utmost attention to their young animals through their first winter, and are sure that they have good shelter, the best of fcod and abundance of pure water at alltimes. Their growth should at notime be checked for wantof attention to these impor- portant considerations. While every branch of husbandry requires the closest and most careful attention of anin- terested and skilful manager, none suffer for Want ofitso much &s stock during the winter season.—American Stock Journal. @7A gentleman in Taunton, Mass., has just received 25,0C0 stolen from him between Balti- more and Washington a year ago. It was re- covered by detectives, but as they made a mis- take in taking his name, they were nearly a year finding the owner.
