Seward presiding —Annual Kepors of the Commission—Addresses, dc.—The third anniversary of the Christian Commission was held mn the Hall of the House of Representatives last night. An immense throng was in attendance, completely filling the gaileries and doorways, and in many in- stances obstructing the staircases. Hon. W. H. Seward, Secretary of State, presided The exercises were ea by the singing of B Uni's anthem, “Mighty Jehovah,” by the Wash. ington Hanael avd Haydn Society. Du ing the reading of a chapter from the Bible, President Lincoln arrived, and was esoorted to @ seat near the Speaker's desk After prayer and another hymn. Mr. Seward adaressed the meeting as follows: “In comirg once more into these halls of th Nauonai Lezisia:ure, although for only an occasional purpose, my thoughts revert to the circumstances under which I left them four years ago. ‘ Misguided legislators had found at last the long delayed occasion, and had organized a fearful rebellion. They had appointed their jeader, had seized by surprise important forts, ports, and places, and their armies were rush- ing into the fleld. One atter another the con- epirators threw off the mask and departed from the Capitol, huriing back curses and defiance against the Gover nt. Foreign nations, con. founced by the magnitude and boldness of the msurrection, prepared to acknowledge a di- vided empire On tne side oft the Government was seen and beard only alarm“and confusion. Un- availing appeais to reflection and propositions ! for conciliation came forth from every section | of a country which regarded fraternal war as the greatest of crimes and the most irretrieva- ble of calamities. The people called first upon the outgoing President, then upon the incom- ‘wg President, and then, successively upon each one of our bravest generals and most hon- ored statesmen, to save the Unton, and to save it quickly, and by one master-stroke. Tothese frantic appeals only one truthfulanswer could be given er wasgivyen. Thatanswer was, that by noone act,and by noone man, could the Union be saved. It could bestyed only by the | voluntary, energetic, heroic and persistent ef- fort of the whole people. “The people promptly arose to make that su- preme effort; they have faithfully persevered ia it, and itis now seen tobe successful. Lost forts, ports and places, without which the in- surrection Cannot succeed, have been regained. The corner-stone of the rebellion has been up- lifted and cast out, and we wait only at the | hands of the rebels for the submission, which. however, delayed, necessarily tollows military defeat and overthrow. In this achievement the people of the United States have not waited to tollow, but they have gone before the exacu- tive, the legislative and the judicial autherities ot the Government. «1 haye heretofore borne my _ testi- Mony to this popular energy_in the depart. meats of war, finance and ities. Batthe War bas opened another fleld of activity and jabor, a field not less important or interesting than those which usually lie directly in re- view. That fleld is the department of charity. We have here in our country no established church or recognized ecclesiastic authority. They taunt us with not even recognizing a God in our national Constitution. All etfort, all association, and all submisston is purely voluntary. Nevertheless, the Ohristian Com- mussion and Sanitary Commission, working together in perivct harmony, unorganized, un- paid, unprompted, and even unnoticed by the Government, have cultivated the broad field to which I haye adverted, with complete and full success. They have left no wounds, or Sickness, Or sorrows, unheeded and unre- lieved, which could be reached by any other than a Divine hand. “I have consented to take this chair, only because it affords me a fitting opportunity to prociaim my sincere conviction that the chari- Ues of this, the greatest and most fearfal of all civil wars, though voluntary rendered, have nevertheless, been administered by the Uaris- ; tian people of the United States, without any sacrilegious holding back, andin a spirit of jofty patriotism and pure and undefiled re- ; lgton.”* Geo. H. Stuart, Esq., chairman of the Com. Mission, stated, Among other things, that the Tistian Commis:ion wasyepresented by min« wsters of all the Christian churches in the United States; that, thus organized, their aim Was to distribute hospital stores, religious books, newspapers, and, in fact, everything which might be needful and useful to the sol- diers and prisoners ef the armies of the United ‘States, in the field and bospital. He also read a fullexbibit of all the funds placed in the hands of the Commission during ‘he past three years. which amounted in the aggregate to #1,(%,441 30. Among the articles distributed were $1,714 26155 worth of stores; value of pabiications distributed, $146,571.26; stationery, 825,534 71 Two hundred and sixty-five chapels and chapel tents had been erected in the various armies since the commencement of last winter, And there were at the present time two hun- dred and seventy-six delegates in the fleld. Mr. Stuart also exhibited to tne audience a fac simile of a silver brick which had been sent to the Christian Commizsion by the natives of Sierra Nevada, which was about ten inches { jong, six inches wide, and four inches deep. Addrerses were then delivered by Rev. J. W. Smith, and Rey.C. M. Butier, of Philadelphia, Bishop Ames, of Indiana, Prevost Marshal General Patrick, Admiral Farragut, General Fiske, and others. SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION.—The Regents of the Smithsonian Institution held a special Meeting on Saturday last at the Smithsonian building. on 8 call of the Secretary. Present. Vice President Hamlin, Chiet Jus- tice Onase, Senator Trumbull, Hon. Mr. Pat. terson, of New Uampshire, the Mayor of Washington, the secretary, Prof. Henry, the treasurer. Mr. Seaton. Secretary Henry made a verbal statement of the origin and extent of the late cenfiagration of the building, which, it seems, was confined chiefly to the upper story cf the central build- ing, and of the losses iu its contents sustained by the fire. The Regents then accompanied the Secretary in a cursory survey of the dam- aged portions of the edifice They tound that 3 tem ‘ary roof was in the course of erection, and already far advanced towards completion, by which the lower or museum story (about 200 feet long) will be protected from injury by bad weather until the building can be tempor- arily repaired and restored. On reassembling a resolution was adopted ealling for a written report of the catastrophe, for the purpose of record; also, ordering a pro- fessional survey of the dilapidated portions of the building, to agcertain the nature and extent of the repairs necessary and the probable ex- pense thereof, and asurvey and reporton those iejared towers which present safety may pos- sibly require to be taken down. The Secretary stated tothe board that the partial destruction of the building would not interrupt the regular active operations of the tustitution, which weuld proceed as usual. The Regents then adjourned to meeton Thurs- day evening, when the examination of the last year’s accounts and other business devolving on the annual meeting will be transacted. ee OrpHans' Court, Judge Purcell.—On Satar- day, the will of the late Martin Johnson was fully proven and admitted to probate, and fetters testamehtary issued to Martha H. John- son. The will of the late He@ry R. Schoolcraft was fully proved, and letters testamentary issued to Mary A Schooleratt. He leaves his prop. erty, a large portion of which is in the West, to bis wife, to which also he leaves the copy- right of his works: Expedition to the sources of the Mississippi, Scenes and Adventures in the Czark Monntains, Legends of Hiawatha. The will of the late Joseph Kelam Willdrin ‘Was purtially proven. The will of W. H. Edes, of Georgetown, leaving his property to his children, and nom- inating Margaret Edes and Daniel Edes execu- tors, was filed for probate. The will of the late Wm. J. Stone, bequeathing his property to his widow, who he leaves executrix, and his sons and grandson, was fied. The first and final accounts of J. F. Kelly, executor of Mary Farrar, and James McSherry, guardian to his children, were approved and passed. ——— THE German Relief Association have made arrangements fora Grand Sacred and Classic Concert, to be given at Grover’s Theatre, on Sunday evening, February 5th.
