THE EVENING STAR. CONGRESSIONAL. Ix THE SENATE yesterday after our report lesed— ' ‘The Senate resumed the consideration of the gubjectof retaliation, And without arriving at any conclusion, after & brief executive session, adjourned. 1x THE HovsE— After protracted debate on the resolu‘ion permitting members of the Cabinet to p: pate in discussion on the floor of Congress con- cerning their respective departments, the | House postponed the subject until next week. and passed the new deficiency bill, which was defeated by the disagreement of the two House on the item making provision for extra com- pensation to thecierks and employees of the House to the extent of 26 per cent. Mr. Stevens said the bill was precisely as the two branches had agreed, with the excep- tion of thatclanse. In orderto avoid objec- tions by the Senate, he had changed the phrase. ology, by adding $35,000 to the contingent fund of the Honse, in order to discharge obligations, and fulfil its pledges heretofore in- curred On motion of Mr. Rice, of Maine, the Com- mittee on Public Buildings and Grounds was instructed to inquire into the origin of the fire at the Smithsonian Institution, and what meas- ures are necessary for the preservation of its property. Mr. Spalding introduced a bill proposing, after the Istof May, atax on National Bank issues: which was referred to the Committee on Ways and Means. [From the Detroit Advertiser } Any person who has recently passed along the Geck nearthe foot of First Street, will probably hsve noticed a large wooden figure of an Indien, embellished with all the trap- pings ofa Chippewa chief, and leaning azainst he warehouse of- . Not long agoa stranger wppeared in front of the provost marshal’s office, and beckoning to oneof the substitute brokers hanging around there, said to him: * You are in the substitute business, 1 believe!” Being answered affirmatively, he continued: “Do you take Indians?” + On, yes,” said the broker. Well,” inquired the stranger, “what will you give me if I tell you Where you can get one, sound in every respect not liable to draft, and will go as a substitute, if accepted !" “Give, you,” replied the broker, every feature in his face beaming with delight At the prospect of making a lucky strike, ‘‘give you! why, l’ll give youa hundred dollars in greenbacks.” “It sa bargin,” said thestranger, and they clasped hands fraternally over it. «Here’s my bame,”’ he continued, handing the broker a card, on which was pencilled “Enoch Ketchum.” Take this to -» near the foot of First street, and tell themthat I sent you after that Indian; they will understand it; and don't forget the hundred doliars when you getjhim through.’ “All right,” shouted the broker, as he jumped on board of a street car, on his way tothe foot of First street. Having reached the warehouse, he presented his card, and informedthke attendants of his mission. “Go Tight through the back door on to the dock, and turn to the Jeft, and you will find the only [n- dian that I know anything about in this neigh- borhood.” said the attendant. Having follow- ing directions, he soon came face to face with the Chippewa chief heretofore referred to. LigUTENANT.GENERAL GEANT’S RESIDENCE IN PHILADELPHIA—The residence recently purchased by a committee of gentlemen of this city, and which has been gratuitously tendered to General Grant and family as a permanent home, and which has been accepted by Gene- ral Grant, is on the north side of Chesnut street, westot Twelth. The building occupies a front of twenty-two feet, extending back to the distanceof one hun- dred and sixty-eight feet, wlth a thirty-two foot street in the rear. It is a four-story double front, with three-story double back buildings. The front is constructed of fine pressed brick, with brownStone finishings, and, ‘with the exception of the first floor, contains three windows front. It contains inali six- teen rooms, four ef which are located on the first ftoor, fiye on the second, five on the third, and two on the fourth. ‘The apartments on the first floor consists of @ large saloon, parlor, dining-room, and Kitchen, and brick wash-house. The parlor is most magnificently furnished, being lighted by achandelier with twelve burners, and also four brackets. The xitchen is provided with Mot and cold water, and all the modern im- provements, The wash-house contains station- ary wash tubs, range and other conveniences very seldom seen in any similar structure. ‘The second floor of the main building con- tains two bed chambers, bath-room and water- cleset. The back building on the same floor contains a drawing-room and library. The third floor contains two chambers front, and one chamber and a nursery back, also, a bath-room. Both on the second and third flocrs permanent washstands are fixed. On the fourth floor there are billiard rooms. The yard is flagged, and has been tastefully jJaid out, flowers and choice plants being im- bedded. The front presents a very imposing appearance. A brown stone verandah extends frcm the parlor windows, the glass in which is of the finest French plate. The pavement is to be improved by being laid with flag-stone. ‘The structure cost over $30,000. As the donors intend furnishing the dwelling before handing it over, it will probably not be ready for occu- psney until about the firstof March. The fur- niture isnow im process of manufacture, aud will be of the rarest quality.— Philadelphia In- quirer. ‘WaterR-Proor Boot Sorzs.—If hot tar is appliea to boot soles, it will make them water- proof.
