IN THE SENATE yesterday after our report @lesed— The Senate considered at length the subject of retaliation upon the rebel prisoners, and Without cieposing of the matter, adjourned. In THE Hover— The resolution providing for the heads of the | Departinents to occupy seate on the floor ot the | House, to be interrogated under certain rules concerning affairs in their respective Depart- ments, and toa limited ex.ent to participate in debate, was considered, and After speeches from Mr. Ganson and Mr. Morrill, the House | adjourned. A Singuiar Peace Rumor. The New York Evening Post of Tuesday, | publishes in a conspicuous editorial the follow- ing statement : Ameng the rnmors which are circulated in this city and elsewhere, respecting the infor- mal conversations which have been held at Richmord and Wasbington, on the sabject of peace between the United States and the in- surgent organization, is one of a different char- ter {rom the rest, which deserves a place by itself. It is said that in these conversations the plan bas been euggested of allowing the rebel host and its leaders to withdraw from the United States, tothe provinces of Mexico, without hinderance or molestation, like an army going out from & beseiged citadel with the honors of war. Once beyond the hmits of the United States, their expectations would be that they are no longer to be regarded as the enemies of the Federal Government, bnt rather as aa in- tegral portion of the Mexican population, to which they willadd themselves, and by the majority of which—that isto say, by the libe- ral party—they will expect to be received as friends, if not in.the highest character of lib- erators. Arrived in Mexico their p!ans will be to fol- low, for the present, the profession they have learned in the last four years—that of war. The rumor goes that the migrating army will by no means think of recognizing the gov- erpment of Maximilian. They are to offer their services, as soldiers, to the gov- ernment of Juarez, fully confident that the men who bayeso long and under so many Gisadvantages maintained themselves against the vast power and resources of the loyal States will findit an easy task todrive out the invader and usurper from Mexico. When this is once accomplished the liberators will of course lock for their reward. Mexico has large tracts of fertile unoccupied land on which the Warrtiers wil expect to settle, and their supe- rior mmteligence and energy will give them at once a high position among the mild, indolent and imperfectly civilized race which forms the mags of the inhabitants. A large share in the direction of public affairs wonld of course fall to their lot, and the exiles from the United States wonld hope to become tke magnates of the goverament whose independence they had vindicated. One stipulation, besides that of not being molested and interferet with, and one Only, we have heard connected with this scheme of migration, and that is, permission from our government to dispose of the cotton which is still in their hands,in order to raise a sufficient outfit for their retreat to Mexieo, and the means of maintaining themselves for a while in their new country. In regard, to slavery we have heard of no condition whatever demanded in connection with this exodus of the rebeis from the country of their crimes at their misfor- tenes. The rumor supposes them too sensible of their cwndesperate condition, and too well tntormed of the inflexible determination of the people ot the United States on this point, to raice any question concerning the continuance of slavery, not to mention the strong hatred borne to slavery in Mexico. A peaceful migra- tion with their srms and the proceeds of their eotion are the sole conditions that we have heard of belonging to this scheme. Wagon Wheels. ‘Wagon wheels ought to stand perfectly plomb, and the face of the tire should be paral- lel with the axels and with the plane of travel, if it isa prime object to have the load upen the wheels draw with the least outlay of power. Carriage and wagon makers have, it would appear, Jong been in the ruts of old usage, and Baye no®worked philosophically. In this they are like the rest of the world and capecitily like us farmers. In the Coach-makers Journal we find some sound reasoning &bout the shape and position of wheels. Carriages are made to run straight forward. Wheels are often made “conical” or “dishing,” that is, having the rim @ narrow sectionof acone. Now & cone nat- urally rollsin acircle, and a cylinder rolls straight torward. The tire of a wheel therefore should be @ narrow section of @ cylinder, for there is a loss of power in making & gone roll in astraight line. ‘Cue power which it is re- quired to move & cone in a straight line may be judged from the fact that the most powerful | means for grinding the hardest materials isa cylinder forced to roll ina circle, And the fame “twist” or “drag”? which grinds the paint ina | gga mill worked on this principle, wears out the wheels, pulverizes the road, and adds to the draft wheels if made conical. It is un- philescphical also to have tapering axels and conical hub-boxes, both should be cylindrical. If the ends of the axels are bentdown, the only gocd effectis to givethe mud thrown when driving rapidly ® tendency to fly away from | the carriage The wheels, however, roll upon | * the edge of the tire. and are drawn ata me- chanical disadvantage.— American Agricultural- ist. Live Hedges. We have never been fayorable to the culti- vation of live hedges as a means for dividing a farm into flelds, on the ground that they are not advantageous to the interests of the farmer, either in regard to expense or security. Inthe first place it will require at least half-a-dozen | years after planting before a live hedge will be large enough to turn cattle, durirg which ume another fence will be necessary. In the second piace, a plant js always here and there dying out, requiring to be patched forthe time being, with posts-and-rails, or some other unsightly objects. In the third place, from neglect the hedge will become open in places by the | brapches not being thoroughly interlaced with one another. In the fourth place, there is only one plant that appears to suit this region of country for hedging— the Osage Orange: and this when it becomes fifteen or twenty years old, sends out its roots fifteen or twenty feeton either side, and to thisextent so seriously ex- hausts the land as to renderit almost wholly unproductive in the way of crops. We have not as much experience, however, as some of our correspondents upon this subject; and shall be glad to print their views, whatever they may be, but trom what we have learned, we should hesitate before introducing live hedges of any kind upen a farm. {Since the toregoing was written we have received & communication from an esteemed correspondent in Delaware, upon this very subject, which we shall give a place in our next issue. He takes adverse ground to our own.in & very sensible articie.|—Germantown Telegraph. Eggs in Winter. ©. R. informs us how hens may be made to lay inwinter when eggscellathighprices. Usu- ally in spring and summer hens lay well. It would appear then that the nearer the tempera. tare of winter can be made of spring, the bet- terhens will lay. His hen-house in winter is in a cellar with windows on the south side reaching from the topto the bottom. Unaer the reost is a stone-floor covered with peat or joam a footand a half deep. Since changing his hens from aceldto a warm shelter, and feeding them with boiled potatoes, flesh, pow- déred houe, blood, &c., eggs Lave become abun- davt. No fowls should be kept over two years, as they lay best when a year old and before. Select roosters from small varieties and different breeds. Bolton Grays are nearest the standard for !ayers. Years of experience baye confirmed our valued correspondent in these views of barnyard fowls.
