They are charged with purchasing medical stores, amounting in value to about two hundred dollars, from Fred- erick Burkhausen, hospital steward at Doug- las Hospital. Mr. Louis Schade appeared as counsel for the defense. Assistant Surgeon Thompson, Medical In- spector of the Department of Washiagton, tes- tified that during lastsummer he was surgeon in charge of Doug!as Hospital, during which time the steward, Burkhausen, obtained leave of absence, and, not returning, was considered @ deserter. Having missed medical stores, witness instituted an examination, which led to the discovery of a portion of the missing ar- ticles in the establishment of the accused. The books of the latter were produced, which showed the dates of purchases from Burkhau- sen and tne prices paid, which in some in- stances were one-third of the value of the ar- ticles. A portion of the medicines, such as quinine and morphine, was sent to Baltimore by the accused and disposed of there. ‘The depositions of the prisoners were read, stating that they purchased the articles from Barkhaasen in good faith, believing his repre- sentations that the medicines were not used at the hospital, and that he had authority from the surgeon in charge to dispose of them. Rec- ommendations respecting the good character of the accused, signeé by the German members of the Loval League were also read, and at the request of their counsel, the further considera- tion of the case was postponed until to-morrow morning. Ss Navy YARD AFFAIRS.—The gunboat Juni- er, of the Potomac flotilla, arrived this morn- og for coal. She reports much ice in the Potomac, great difficulty in getting up. There are a large number of transports and vessels bound up in the ice at different points, which, as low down as Lower Cedar Point, is four inches thick, ana strong enough for an army to cross. The Juniper made her way up by fol- lowing the iceboat Atlantic, which broke open & pasesge to Mattawoman, and from thence she came ap in company with the tug Sam Jones, breaking away the ice little by little. There is nothing new reported below. ‘The repairs on the Commodore Read, A. Vol. Lieut. Hooker, are progressing rapidly, and in @ week or ten days it is expected that she will resume her old station on the Rappahannock. The Stepping Stones, Acting Master Roder- ick, will be ready in about two weeks. Ske is receiving a thorough overhauling. Invalid reader, do you know what nine-tenths of the Bitter compounds you are solicited by the pro- prietors to accept as universal panaceas are com- posed of? Give heed for a moment. They are manufactured from urpurified alcohol, containing a considerable portion of fuse! ci/, a poison almost as deadly as pruteic acid. The basis of the regular tinctures of the Materia Medica is thesame. No amount of “herbal extracta’’ ean overcome the bad tendency of this pernicious element. The Essence of sound Rye thoroughly rectified, is the only stim- ulant which can be safely used asa componentof a Tonic, alterative and anti billious medicine, and Hosratter’s 8toMACH BitTERrs is the only medic- inal preparation in the world in which this article is used agan ingredient.
