Subsegently, Garnett having attached himeelf to the rebellion, this property was seized, and, on the 23d of July, 1863, confisca- ted by adecree of the United States District Court for this District. On the 9th of Septem- ber following it was sold, Alexander R. The court declined to pass upon the matter finally untila report should be made by the Anditor of the court, who was directed to in- ‘westigate the condition of the estate, to report ‘what incumbrances are upon it, and to esti- mate the vaiue of the life estate of Garnett as distinguished from the fee simple of the property. The result in this case will be looked for ‘with interest by the bar and litigants. Several important questions will probably arise that must turn upon deligate legal distinstions. The confiscation law forbids forfeiture beyond the fife of the rebel. Consequently the decree in ‘this and in all cases in this district condemns «call the right, title, interest and estate of A. Y. CHARGES OF ADMINISTERING DRUGGED Jy qvor arp Rospery.—On the 2d ultimo, a sol- dier, pamed Phillip Dennis, company D, Ist p. ©. volunteers, went to the bouase of Delavan Hubnell, on D street, near 133, and there, it appears, he drank several times, and it is alleged Hubnell administered to him dragged liquor. Dennis subsequently started to Alex- andria, where his regiment is stationed, but stopped in a lumber yard, where he fell asleep, and when he awoke he discovered that he had been robbed of his watch and pocket-book, containing a certificate on the Treasury tor $200. The Department was notified of the loss, and a Jookout kept for the certificate. On Tuesday last,a young man named James H. Turner and a soldier named George B. Gardner, V. RK. C., presented tse certificate at the counter of the Treasury, and Mr. A.G. Richardson declined to pay the money, but kept them in con vereation until he could send for Col. L.O. Baker, who, when he took charge of them, and sent fer detectives McDevitt and Clarvoe, to whom he turned the case over. ‘These officers, with their accustomed prompt- itude, immediately set to work and arrested Charles Donovan, alias Jersey, and Spence ‘Talbert on suspicion of being concerned in the Tobbery; Hubnell, the keeper of the house for administering drugged liquors, and Thomas Monair, who has frequently been in the hands of the detectives before. Last night, the parties were brought before Justice Boswell, who, after hearing the evi- dence, fined Hubnell 225 for selling liquor to soldiers, and beld him to security for adminis- tering drugged liquor, held Turner to bail to answer the charge of robbery, dismissed Tal- bert and Donovan, turned Monsir over to the Superintendent, who ordered him to leave the city, andturned Gardner over to the military authorities, with a request that they keep him as a witness. ——————— THR ASSAULT ON JuDGE KELLEY.—On Sat- urday afternoon, Judge Field, one of the Lou- isiana delegation to Congress, with Hon. Thos. Corwin as counsel, appeared before Justice Boswell, to answer the charge of assault and battery_on Hon. W. D. Kelley, of Pennsyl- ania 4) Mr, Kelley was first sworn, and testified that while artting 2t the table in the dining-room of Willard’s. unconscious of the presence of Mr. Field, the latter said to him, “Why do you keep us out in the cold; why don’t you admit us, likeaman?’ Witness replied, “I have nothing to do with admitting you yet, the question is in the committee, and is not yet be- fore the Houze.” Judge Field then said, with an oath, ‘Why do you not come up to the mark like aman!” Witness replied, in a low tone, witbout meaning offence, that he was ‘‘in the babit of marching up to the line,” and after a few words of similar conversation, concluded by charging ungentlemanly conduct upon Mr. Field in the presence of ladies. Mr. Field then left the table, anda few moments after made an attack on the witness as he passed out the door of the dining-room, wounding the lat- ‘ter in the back of his hand with a pocket-knife. Friends of the parties then separated them, and ‘witness left to get his wound dressed. Major Harper gave the same testimony, both witnesses being interrupted by Mr. Field with profane remarks, until finally checked after Tepeated admonitions by Justice Boswell. After some cross.examination the case was submitted, the Justice requiring $500 bail of Mr. Field for his appearance at court, and 1,000 to keep the peace; Mr. John D.
